How Authors Describe Characters: Direct vs Indirect Characterization

When taking a reading comprehension test, have you ever been stumped by a question asking about how the author or another character feels about a specific character?
Or perhaps when reading a novel or story, you’re somewhat confused trying to figure out a characters’ personality or motivation?
If you are, then you may not realize that the author is expecting you to use your inferencing skills and use the clues that she is giving you about the characters.
Today we’re going to explore the way authors describe characters; and this is using a literary device called direct and indirect characterization.
We are also going to look at the way an author’s use of characterization may interfere with your reading comprehension,
And you ‘ll have a chance to practice answering test-like multiple choice questions about characterization.

Hello ma'am, I call upon you to explain these following sentences.what is the difference between the two words "close down"(noun) vs "for the closing down". Maybe the second one is a verbal noun. Could you make me understand those two words with an example?? 2) walk beneath the sun if I say walk under the sun, Is there any wrong? Lie beneath the stars vs lie under the stars. If correct, what is the difference between the two prepositions in these sentences?

Close down is a phrasal verb. Example: The business had to close down their online store. "For the closing down" is not used by native speakers, so I'm not really sure what you're trying to say. Under refers to when something is directly below something else. Beneath refers to something below another thing almost with close contact. That's why you would say that the sun and moon are beneath the stars. In reality, you could use both, and it depends on idiomatic expression. You could use either one. Beneath sounds more formal and poetic.

@@thelearningdepot so great is your explanation.👍👍👍 By the by I am also perplexed regarding the word "closing down" , but I am one hundred percent sure I noticed that word utilized in a non-native English news paper. The issue is that I can't remember that example 🙄as I watched that news a long time ago. Anyway thanks though.

@@Ivan-7572 I think you may have seen it in the same context of close down. Example: The decline of in-person movie attendance has led to the closing down of many theaters. In that case “the closing down” is a verbal noun. 😊
