That is literally the first time I've EVER seen someone talking about the GBA Ed, Edd and Eddy game. I remember enjoying it a lot back in the day and playing some it again, it holds up surprisingly well. Feels like a great midterm between an episode from the show (my favorite cartoon of all time!) and a decent, if generic plataformer

@@dtxspeaks268 I think if the movies hadn't come out, "Spider-man: The Movie: The Game" would've been the sequel to Spider-man 2: Enter Electro. It seems intentional that most of the bosses (Green Goblin, Kraven, Vulture) were bosses missing from the two PS1 games.

I rarely hear anyone talk about the _Hamtaro_ games, but the first three released in the west were really solid and fun adventure games. I actually got into the franchise because of the games rather than the other way around, and they got me interested in adventure games as a whole. I honestly wish more games had a mechanic similar to the first two's Ham-Chat system, which combined adventure game "action verbs" with a collect-a-thon where you had to learn the words you used to interact with things. My friends look at me funny when I talk about them, since they're based on a somewhat cutesy series aimed at elementary schoolers, but the adventure games were honestly really good, especially for licensed games. (That being said, I could take or leave the sports one, and the DS edutainment game was only good as a time-killer for anyone over the age of 5) (I didn't mean for this to turn into an essay, I just have strong feelings about them that are hard to summarize 😅)

I dont know why, but Madagascar the videogame is honestly one of the best 3d platformers on the ps2, GCN, Xbox. The main story is fun to play through. The Penguin MGS style stealth mission was so much fun to me as a kid. There was a whole bunch of costumes you could put on the characters. And for no reason a really good shuffle board, mini golf, and tons of random arcade games. For a random ass licenses kids film game, it knocks it out of the park in content

I always remember having fun playing the TMNT movie game on PS2. Last year i bought it for my collection, played it through and yeah... it wasn't good. Also randomly at the last boss the game wants you to pull a manoeuvre that you don't even know about unless you saw like one thing at the very beginning of the game and you never even got to use it... until the last boss.

"I'm here for you" I actually love that game. The platforming is always stressful, doesn't help that the wall-run is clunky. It's either "I'm running on the wall over a pit, good" or "Well, the run up the wall animation played and now I fall into a pit, great". The combat is okay, it's incredibly frustrating when a bs enemy type hits you and there's nothing you can do about like, like the Foot guys who kick you. Seriously *fuck,* those guys. You have to admit that the soundtrack is good, sometimes great, even if they aren't super memorable. And I don't think that last maneuver is hard to figure out. The game has a hint in the bottom left of which turtle to use, there's some blue particles I think, *aaand* Leo says something. Well I was a dumb kid and I figured it out. I agree they could have made you use it once before. I find it kind of symbolic that you have to use Leo as the final attack, really ties everything up nicely, my only complaint with that is that Mikey is the one helping in the animation, and not Raph. I think I'm done now

One really good Disney licensed title I don't hear people bring up is Kim Possible on the PS2. They even have a ton of unlockable costumes for Kim and Shego in the game from the show.

I had a few licensed games similar to these, but the one I remember the most fondly was Madagascar on the PS2. The game was a fun platformer woth different mechanics for different characters. The best part was the stealth level based on the penguins taking over the ship. I rewatched the Madagascar movie the other day and had to mention the penguin level when it got to that part of the movie. Looking back there were some clunky and fustrating parts from the game (Example: the bee mission), but the game felt unique. There were a couple other licensed games I liked when I was younger, but this is one I enjoy remembering most.

Honestly, the PS2/GC/Xbox era had some of the best licensed games. It was an odd mix of the higher quality productions and more experienced developers, with the frequency and variety where basically any licensed property would get a game, so we ended up with just...overall better titles, but the same kind of constant, unceasing releases we'd seen before. Oh sure, there were awful ones, but there were plenty that were decent that fans could enjoy. Not to mention some real gems, some of the absolute best licensed games came out of the early-mid 2000s. I think that the only other generation to have a similarly higher quality would be the SNES...Or, rather, the Super Famicom. It was still shit in the U.S., but there were buckets full of 7/10 to 8/10 licensed anime and manga games.

The final mission of PR Dino Thunder is actually surprisingly technical. Throughout the game you get more Zords with different powers and the final mission has you utilize the PachycepholZord, the strongest in the game. So you have to destroy bombs before they go off in a volcano and kill you with the Zord’s ultimate. The problem is, they’re on the walls, and Pacycepholozord can’t fly… but the Pterazord can! So you have to fly around with the Pyerazord then switch in mid-air to the Pacycepholo and use you’re ultimate and then quickly switch back or die to the lava

This is how it goes, if a game has a tv adaptation, it's mostly to focus on the story that couldn't be told in a game, and licensed games are the reverse, they let you explore the world of certain cartoons, gameplay wise, they might suck sometimes, but are still very amazing to play through.

There was a lot of good and decent license games back then! One problem I remember was sobby game critics who made a career to bash on all license games - even those who where not that bad gameplay + price wise. You can't expect all games to be masterpieces, only decent gameplay and content that resembles what they are based on. Disney had some decent titles like; Donald Duck: Quack Attack, Mickey Mouse and the Magic Mirror, Disney Extreme Sports, The Incredibles, Cars, etc or DreamWorks games with Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon and Bee Movie Game. Or Cartoon Network games with Cartoon Network Racing, Ed, Edd & Eddy, Cartoon Network Speedway, Wacky Races, The Shadow of Aku, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy etc. Or all the Marvel & DC games like the Spider-Man 1 & 2 on PS1, Spider-Man Trilogy, Ultimate Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, X-Men, Batman Vengeance, Batman; Rise of Sin Tsu, Hulk the game, Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death etc. Or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games based on the 2003 series, Or the Simpsons games like Simpsons Road Rage, Simpsons Hit & Run or Simpsons the Game or the Family Guy game or the Futurama game etc. So yeah there was a lot of entertaining license based games!

I miss "shovelware" like this. My entire childhood up till about High school was made up of games like these with a few bigger 1st party games in there too. From gba and gamecube my first console and handheld, to the wii, ds, ps2,ps3,psp, 3ds, games based off my favorite shows, movies, characters were fun even if i only beat some of them. Now after years of hearing 30 somethings online saying how the golden age was 16 bit era i feel i cant look back at my childhood with such passion despite basically being spoiled by my parents and having so many games. Im going back to these systems to relieve them and see what i think about them but honestly after being told so much that my childhood games were basically garbage its really nerve wracking to to back to these games.

The NES era was the golden age of Licensed games. Huge part of that is all games of that era were way smaller and required far fewer resources than games that would come later, so that the extreme limits on funds and time available to build a licensed game (due to the money for the project's budget having to be bid down to the lowest offer against other rival developers to win the contract from the property owner; alongside the property owner's typically strict time limit requiring the game to be completed and released to coincide with the official release the a movie or TV show it is tied-into) were not as crippling as it would be in later console generations. So companies like Sunsoft (pretty much the king of licensed games), Konami, Argonaut Software, and even Rare Limited could churn out fun, well-made, worthy of your time tie-in titles for properties ranging from movie to TV show to comic books, both on home consoles and obviously in the arcades. The Super Nintendo era started seeing more and more licensed games that were average to mediocre either due to time and budget constraints, too-small development teams, or simply flat-out incompetent development teams being awarded contracts, but it wasn't really until the sixth console generation, where the requirements for number of developer team members, funds, and time necessary to build a game grew enough that the tight budgets of licensed games restricted most of them to Subpar Purgatory. Sure you would get a game here or there that was excellent, but that was typically due to the developer having enough people and given either enough budget or time to make it like a regular game. Goldeneye 007 was a masterpiece of its era explicitly because it was allowed to spend two years in development beyond the release of the movie it was based on. And was given the time, leeway, and budget by Nintendo to Rare to let them make the game they thought was mechanically best suited to the property. Argonaut Software in the same era was lucky if they could make a licensed game with that kind of support. There were few of them, most notably The Emperor's New Groove (PS1) and Alien Resurrection (PS1) (Ironically a game far better than the movie it is based on for being faithful to the horror-action roots of the franchise). But most of them were Disney's Aladdin in Nasira's Revenge (basic controls and mechanics are unfun to try to interact with as the developers were not given the time to refine even the most basic aspects of the game) or Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (PS1) (a very solid core concept for the title, a more linear Zelda-like Action-Adventure game, with far more usable controls and mechanics, but far-far-far too short and limited in scope).

Licensed games in the 2000's were pretty weird in the sense that you could get something that surprisingly polished/well made or get a complete dumpster fire (although usually most of them were just mid). Star Trek Elite Force, Simpsons Hit & Run, Hot Wheels Stunt Track Challenge, Transformers (2004 game), Dragon Ball Z Budokai, Chronicles of Riddick, Scarface, etc. come to my mind as very good ones. In general a lot better than they needed to be.

If you ever plan on getting the Wall•E game, make sure you get the PSP/PS2/PC (Steam! Yes, its on Steam!) version! Its completely different to the PS3/360/Wii versions, which honestly feel and look kinda janky. The PS2 versions were made by Asobo Studios, yes, the same Asobo that made Microsoft Flight Simulator! Meanwhile, the PS3 versions were made by Heavy Iron Studios, which, given they made the SpongeBob games, makes it kinda weird to see their version be the "weirder" one. But yeah, the Asobo version of the Wall•E game is surprisingly good! It even has a cute little surprise after you get through the story!

Why is it that the 3D model of Ed is a perfect translation from his original 2D design but both Edd and Eddy look absolutely unnerving and like they could bite my fingers off?

It's funny because I grew up with the GBA versions of most of the SpongeBob games including the Movie game. They're all 2D platformers and I have fond memories of all of them. But they're all overshadowed by their console counterparts, even the ones where the console counterpart isn't well liked either (like Revenge of the Flying Dutchman) My first experience with a console SpongeBob game was Atlantis SquarePantis on the Wii, and I didn't finish it, iirc it couldn't seem to settle on a gameplay style and was way too gimmicky. But I have such heavy nostalgia associated with the GBA games that I could probably never gauge how good they are objectively (probably nowhere near as good as I consider them)

The licensed games I remember playing are the mis-edventures, a few spongebob games, a Disney trivia game for wii, a bratz GBA game, a winx club GBA game, open season for the Xbox 360 and one Naruto Xbox game that I can’t remember the name of.

I take some satisfaction in knowing that 3 of the licensed games I've owned and grew up with for GameCube are now considered to be among the best games ever made for each of those respective franchises: the Spider-Man 2 movie game, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, and The Simpsons: Hit & Run. If you're into video games and love a particular show or movie then no reason you wouldn't want to enjoy a game based on that property. Just that you would want the game in question to actually be good and more than just a quick cash-grab.

I consider many to be good, but my main games are Lightspeed Rescue on PS1, incredible music and realistic visuals, this game was always a trip to play. Secret Agent Barbie on GBA, a stealth game that's very easy to get into and just have fun. Zatch Bell MF, a 3D action game that more accurately represents the fighting from the show than the 1:1 fighter that released first.

You might potentially want to check out the PC versions of Harry Potter: Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban. Chamber of Secrets on PC is basically an improved version of Philosopher's Stone and Prisoner of Azkaban had the best combat in the Harry Potter games for many years. The Simpsons Hit and Run is a well regarded parody of GTA. James Bond: Nightfire isn't based on any specific movie, but is based on a book and movie series. The home consoles version could be considered the best James Bond game to this day or at least the best one after Goldeneye 007 (Nightfire's controls haven't aged as much as Goldeneye 007's). Batman Vengeance is based on BTAS and generally does a faithful job of translating the universe into playable form. On home console; not as well on PC. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 game adaption actually was one of the greatest Spiderman titles back then.

At one point I mocked games based on popular media, but now I wish there was more, like most anime should give them a shot, same for modern tv shows and movies, just with people that understand the thing in question and how to make it work as a game. These days the gaming world just doesn't have a lot like back then in competition aside of oversaturated franchises like Pokemon, Madden and so on.
