In Japan if there is no rescue in sight or we know we are not going to make it, we write down our wills or last messages on this and place them on our body with our ID, so rescuers can ID our body and give our last message to our family.

I caught a 20lb. Mackerel with a safety pin when my nephew forgot to pack my hooks into my tackle box. Out in the wild I took a safety pin 🧷 that he had pinned to his top 👖 where a button had broke off and my sister had temporarily fashioned together. I Jerry-rigged the safety pin to my line and casted off & within a few minutes had a bite, unfortunately the safety pin 🧷 was lost & nephew wore his swim trunks home 😂

Probably one of the most well thought-out "absolute bare essentials" kits I've ever seen. By the way, the nails can be driven into a tree base or log and used to tie a fishing line off to. Just the first thought that I had.

You could put tverything in the kit into the sandwich bag after you open the kit.

Take the piece of paper and rip it into two half's. Then form the two pieces into makeshift ear plugs. Apply some wax from the tealight candle to both tips for Db reduction; insert before 8:20.

I love this review! I got one of these kits in my stocking about 12 years ago and have always tossed it in the bottom of my bag when hiking and backpacking "just in case". I've never opened it and the label has long ago worn off but the seal is still good. Nice to know what might be in there if I ever find myself in a dire situation! I'm pretty impressed by the amount of stuff they packed in there and how well thought out the choice of items appear. Nice!

This is why I always carry my garmin inreach, never needed to use it but its was nice to keep my family in touch when my cell didn't work.

When I was in boy scouts we actually made survival kits similar to this but hand-picked all the items to be high-quality. I'm trying to remember, it's been a very long time since then, but I believe we used some kind of metal peanut or coffee can (roughly 4in in diameter and 3-4in tall) and wrapped it with duct tape. Inside included razor blades, waterproof matches, candles, some cord and a good-quality reflective mirror among many things, the rest of which I cannot remember. Sure, the kit I assembled many years ago was much better quality and being in the scouts it was designed to be a backup to all the other gear we already had (Be Prepared, the scout motto) and this tuna can kit should be considered supplementary as well, or rather redundant. Buy a few and toss one in your glove box, take another to work and leave it in your desk, take one in your day pack on a hike, or get several and disperse them among your camping gear. Maybe during a real emergency you'll have peace of mind knowing that you have lots of little extras in case your main gear has a failure somewhere, or if you find yourself with nothing else purely by bad luck, then at least you'll have something instead of nothing.

You can also use the tip of a lead cast bullet to write on paper and cardboard. Keeping a few cartridges with lead projectiles in your kit is a good idea. Try writing with a lead bullet on something. It really works pretty well.

Wow, this a really neat survival kit for $12, they really put effort in picking the items for these and didn't cheap out consider it's 12 dollars!

After the world ends and just a few of us survived, starving and close to the end; rummaging through a camping store looking for supplies you spot a can of sardines or tuna or something. You get excited, your going to survive the night.. you run over to the can to frantically open it to find ... string.. paper clips and sewing thread!

That was a cool little kit for the money. You could easily make a luer with that piece of flash material, thread, and bread ties easily.

I bet you can take the reflective tape ( looks like it's sticky ), apply it to the bottom of the can, use the nail to make a hole and end up with a better signalling mirror.

Now put that all back in the can.

For its price that's a well thought-out little box of tricks, When he pulled out the copper wire my immediate thought was small animal snare.

A butterfly wrench is used for wing nuts.

The lid of the can! You forgot that! Wrap it around the candle for a windshield. Use it to cut things. Apply the signaling material to that (even if it isn't self adhesive, just take a piece of the duct tape & fold it on itself to make it double sided. You can then take the pop-top ring, with a piece of the thread & hang it on a branch, let the wind do it's job. Heck, you can take the ring & use it to hang several things off of a single mount point. You can use the lid folded and turn it into a funnel. And you can even put it back on the can to contain contents with the duct tape.

I work as a land surveyor and can do some multi day runs to rural Australia to survey land. I usually stay overnight in motels and haven't had an issue with getting stuck somewhere remote, but I feel like I should carry something like this in my glovebox

I have used safty pins as fish hooks, I was poor as dirt as a kid and mom had plenty of safety pins in the house. They work on smaller fish bluegill and sunfish. Brim types. They really do a decent job.

Nails are good for chipping away at things. Prisoners have chiseled their way out of prison with a single nail. You can also put it on the end of something and use it as a weapon or arrow head.

Go out to the woods and try to stay out there for 48 hours with that kit

You otta take a day to make your own in an Altoids can for the fun of it. Could be a good way to talk about bare essentials and your personal recommendations on items and brands of various items.

Yellow cord... fishing lure Duct tape... seal wound and add silver fishing lure trace. So many uses in this kit. Razor blade... too many uses. That looks a great little kit.

That kit is like the magician's hat that he just keep pulling things out of it like it doesn't have a bottom. Maybe the 2 nails are to secure a clothes line? Could always put everything in the ziplock bag aftet opening up the can. As long as the wooden match has a white tip you should be able to strike it on anything dry and rough. It's a nice kit, thank you for sharing.

The nails can be used for sewing things like fur/wool or anything you need to puncture or for weaving plant fibers.

Those matches are strike anywhere matches. The dipping in wax makes them harder to light however, as the wax acts as a lubricant and reduces the friction. Take the wax off the white tip with a fingernail and try striking by keeping the tip at a 90 degree angle to the rough striking surface (try using a rock without so many pits, sandstone works well)

This will be the only few channels that i will have notifications for.

i think the sandwich bag is a backup fire starter you can put water in it, angle it properly and it works like using a magnifying glass fire starting wise

I have half a dozen altoid tins and now a great idea of what to fill them with.

I keep an old pill bottle in my glove box with a few nails(multiple sizes), safety pins, a sewing needle with some thread. The nails get used most often, usually when I want to hang a lantern somewhere. Wire twist-ties and zip-ties are also handy. Pencil is better than a pen, if the paper might get wet. Pencil won’t bleed or dissolve, it will be legible if the paper is intact.
