Hi PP, I see someone else made a similar suggestion but my husband and I recently redid our kitchen and my husband had to build a box to raise a cheaper cabinet we used for our island. He did a great job and you could not tell the difference between the cheaper cabinet and the nicer ones from Lowe’s. Maybe you could pull the cabinet by the stove forward and put a false side on it to make it look like a normal size. That way you can get a standard size countertop.

The handles on cabinets are like jewelry. They just jazz them up and make them look dressier which would appeal to a buyer. I agree about the counter tops. I only replaced mine with Quartz when they started to crack. You have a beautiful home and what a great job you've done.

Here's a story about a person being lazy, and taking a chance to save some money. I know a guy (aged 45, single) who quit his job in 2020 and is homeless since, all by his own choice. He has quite a good amount of cash savings, but he still goes around looking for free food offered by various charities. He says he will only look for a job after this health crisis is over. But just recently, I have found out that he's still hanging around doing nothing, and not looking for any job. He's still going around looking for free food.

Renovated my house a number of years ago, I installed second hand cabinets that cost me $1,700 for a large kitchen - replacement value would have been a minimum of $10,000. Because we were making use of what I had, there was one corner that needed a lower cabinet but we didn't have one to fit the space - we used an extra upper cabinet and built a base for it so it was out at the normal distance from the wall that a lower would be - the countertop covered it up and the toe kick covered the base we made - other than the fact that it that cabinet was a bit shallow, you would never know just looking at it.

Hi Prepper Princess you are always doing the best job at saving and renovating your home. I am pretty bored since I have three more weeks until I get a back to my driving job. I am with the school teachers and students. I am trying to clean up my home and decluttering. It’s not an easy process. I have the old cottage cheese ceiling since 1975. I hope to sell my late parents one day to downsize. I think my home has some asbestos. It’s built in 1952. Most of the homes in my neighborhood homes are from the early 1950’s. Your home is clean and lovely. I am exhausted taking care of 3 bed 2 Bath. I have to wait I 55. It’s hard to do yard work with a large yard. My next door neighbors are spying on me. It’s possibly because I live alone with a few outdoor cats. Wish you lots of luck in improving and upgrading your home. Stay well and safe 👍😀🐶💖

I'm a fan but I have to disagree on a couple of points - the asbestos tile ceiling will definitely effect the value of your home - any buyer would see work and if they thought it through - asbestos abatement expenses. This translates to a lower value for your house, IF you wanted to sell it. From everything you've said, that's not your plan. If you're happy to live with it - that's fine, you've definitely saved some immediate expense, but I don't think you can say it doesn't effect the home value.
@beccaleigh7744

Agreed. As a buyer, I wouldn't want to keep tiles, and I wouldn't want to deal with asbestos. I would consider the cost of removal as well as the value of my added labor and time/inconvenience in any potential offer.

We've recycled an old upper cabinet as lower one, but we pulled it away from the wall so it was level with the stove. When the top was installed, the empty nook just stayed back there and is not noticable at all. Same could work here if that cabinet was moved between the stove and the fridge or if it stays put, just add paneling in the left end.
@countrygal3688
@countrygal3688 Жыл бұрын
You could slide that shallow cabinet by the stove forward, even to the stove. Then fill in the space between the cabinet and wall with a spacer board. Paint to match. Then put a normal depth counter top on and no one will ever notice.

Great video, I used to play with asbestos when I was a kid. My dad had a cloth-like roll of it in the garage and I was amazed it wouldn't burn when I took his torch to it. I used to do my own brake jobs as a teenager. Asbestos was used in the brake lining at the time and I would blow off the brakes with compressed air without wearing a respirator. I'm now 71 and have zero health issues even after painting cars for a living for 14 years using paint that contained isocyanates.

I definitely agree with you on just about everything you've shown us here. The only thing I would debate would be the windows, but of course that depends on the age and condition of the old ones. Most certainly, if you have old, leaded glass windows in a vintage replacing them would be really stupid....Unless they are in really bad condition. My home was built in 1950, and had wood-framed, single pane windows all throughout. My some miracle, none were broken when Hurricane Michael hit in 2018. However, I opted to replace them. Why? They made heating and cooling this house a nightmare. We're EXTREMELY hot in the summer and while not horrible winters, we do have nights at or below freezing. I moved in January 2021. By March, you seriously could not sit in either the dining room, living room or front bedroom until the sun had moved to the south side of the house. Then the front bedroom, and any room the sun hit from the back was roasting. Winter came, and the cold came right through the windows! They weren't drafty, but the cold came right through the glass! Not to mention that anything in direct sun deteriorated more quickly, especially curtains. New, energy efficient windows not only looked better, but they lowered my heating and cooling costs significantly. Bottom line, many home improvement projects are a matter of choosing your battles.

Dollar Tree actually sells cabinet door handles in a simple, sleek design, in silver or black, which can be painted. $1.25 ea is a decent price, considering the markups at big box stores. You can also make your own. Dollar Tree also sells knobs. I bought sev to replace the old knobs on bifold closet doors & for the laundry area. They're more than $1.25 ea elsewhere. I haven't checked out 2nd hand stores like Restore, but will be bc I heard lots of brand new discards are dropped off regularly. I'm all about repurposing, & don't want anything 'cookie-cutter' that you'll find in most houses.

Maybe you could have 1 central cabinet for the hood over the stove and right and left hand side open shelving. You are right about the handles aswell, especially for these kind of doors, you`re better off without the handles. It`s also less cleaning. Your reasoning about the countertops is spot on. In the end (time/value) it is cheaper to get a new one installed. And if one day you decide on painting your cabinets in a happy colour, you`ll have a new looking kitchen. About the asbestos I am a little worried for you. I am European, here asbestos is a big no no. Always happy to see a video of yours. Hahaha, Nala was jealous indeed 😆.

Not lazy (which you are not) but able to put off instant gratification....that's the real reason for so many financial ills now....that and entitlement, which likely go hand in hand. I recall a woman stating (would be about 90+ if still alive) that she and her husband saved 10 years to get the dining set they wanted. It was their first vacation in a ridiculous amount of time. Older generations understood you cannot have it all, you cannot have it all NOW and if you don't have the funds, you simply don't get it.

Vents can attach to the wall and you can then use shelves on the wall (instead of cabinets) to hold spices, unless you like your spices hidden in a cabinet. I am redoing my counters in my kitchen with a kit that I bought. But I will be painting the cabinets first. I’m tired of the brown look (60 years tired) so I’m painting the uppers white and the lowers dark blue. The biggest expense will probably be the cabinet pulls & knobs - I’m asking for gift certificates from the hardware store for my birthday and Christmas and this will pay for most of the supplies. Yep, I’m lazy too!

I like the open shelves idea as mentioned by some other comments! The kitchen is coming together beautifully!! Regarding single pane windows, I don't have solar in my 1957 fixer, but we tried to clean the outsides of the old single pane windows and the weather stripping crumbled under our hands. There were places you could see daylight between the walls and the windows, We knew our heating/cooling energy was going straight outside. It was just under 10k to replace with vinyl double panes, and brand new fiberglass front door with tempered glass storm door. Weather tight now, and more secure. Not to mention, it keeps the bugs outside! Adds curb appeal and we're saving around 18% on our energy bills. I like in Missouri with very humid summers and about 4-6 weeks of below-freezing windy winters.

There is something crazy going on with cabinet pricing right now due to the supply chain issues- family member ended up hiring a handy man and building their own custom cabinets due to the insane price on the "premade custom" cabinet market right now!

If you mean this house, I only saw it in that one room. I love the wood ceiling in the room she went past without mentioning.

We replaced the single pain glass windows & put up thermal blackout shades in my condo a few years back. It certainly keeps the inside warmer in winter & cooler in summers, (we don’t have AC or solar) hence lowers the power bill. But I think you’ve got to take a pencil ✏️ to paper before you make changes to a house. Solar never penciled out at our old house because we did other things to keep the power & natural gas bills low.

I've been in my house since 1979 and do not have cabinet handles because I hate cleaning around them. Lazy.

i finds it easier to keep clean with handles, if im cooking and have something on my hands I can open the door with my elbow, my mother didnt have handles and i would have to wash down cupboard doors after i cooked something because i had to touch them to open them. I forget to take everything out BEFORE I start cooking lol

Yep, shopping around to make sure that you get the very best deal and only paying for what's needed is so important. I just spent a couple of days calling around for new homeowners insurance and even though my old policy increased by almost double over the last couple years, I just found a great new deal with a different company for about 600 less. Because I'm not paying for stuff I don't need

I love having a lower cabinet like you have by the stove. It’s easier for me to knead bread dough or make pie crusts. Good to see the sweet pups! Your home is really coming along!

I'm very lazy too as regards renovations of any kind. I call that " having an appreciation for the vintage " lol. And as for cabinets or counter tops, today's ones are so much worse quality wise than those made in preceding decades, I won't change mine. Yours are just fine, by the way, just the way they are !
