Bhutan 🇧🇹 presents itself as peace loving, progressive and happy country and yet it does not acknowledge its dark history. Some three decades ago, Bhutan
Created one of the biggest Refugees Crisis in the World when it exiled almost 1/6th of its population as illegal immigrant. Almost all of them were “The Lhotshampas”, the Southern Bhutanese, who were from Nepali Ethnicity. They had been living there for generations with peace and then they were all exiled almost overnight.
In this first part of Bhutan’s Darkest Secret: we look at what lead to such dramatic measures from the Bhutanese Monarch for which we would have to start from the beginning, from the foundation of Bhutan, the impact of Buddhism plays in the country, how the current Monarch, Wangchuk Dynasty came to power and along with the gradual migration of Nepali Ethnic people for centuries and ultimately, how it culminated into such a massive Ethnic cleansing.

We also had bhutanese refugees teachers in Gulmi, which is actually quite far away from eastern Nepal and is located in western Nepal. They were fun people. I heard most of them left for the United States after a while.

Thanks for this video brother, even though I was born in Nepal, my parents, grandparents & so on were born in Bhutan. We lived in refugee camps for years until we moved to different countries. I remember my families telling me how all that went down. Currently living in the United states. Always loved your content but wasn’t expecting this one to come. ❤️

Many of those Nepali are from Northeast India pretending themselves to be Bhutanese to get free rice bag in camp and free visa toward USA. Ask them to speak a sentence in Dzongkha if they are true Bhutanese 😂 Neither they look Bhutanese, nor they speak Bhutanese, nor they follow Bhutanese culture. Isn’t it common sense?

Most of my school teachers were Bhutanese refugees. They were very talented and knowledgeble. One of our teacher Indra sir used to recite his story that his house aagaan was big enough to play football with team of 8-9 player each. Our social studies teacher R.B Rai completed his bachelors degree in Bhutan before they ran away from Bhutan. Now. most of them resides in USA and i think are having very good life. They were really multitalented like good at sports, singing, art and craft, storytelling. They introduced Volleyball, Basketball, Leadership training, magazine writing and many thing which were completely new to us. I and all my school mates owe them so much as they have been huge part in making us who we are today. Their camp was at Beldangi, Damak which was 30 minutes walk from our school but had to cross river. They were well paid and could afford good lifestyle but were not allowed to have electricity, bank account, bike license, etc as that would make them look that they could afford quality life and donor like UN would not send donation as their basic needs like food, clethes, shelter, medicine, etc. Though many refugees were literally very poor and uneducated, they used to work in our field during paddy plantation and cutting. They were preffered one because of cheap labour and freindliness. My house was buit by all refugees thekedaar "maila badaa" and mistiriss. They are still in touch as most of them are abroad. The cinema hall next to my house used to get housefull most of the time(most audience were them) but after Bhutanese refugees has gone abroad, the film hall is shut down. They were very important to our towns market.I dont know what other think about them, but Some people like my teachers, those mistitis, workers uncle and aunty were so friendly. I know every of them by name. I miss them and feel good for them that after facing such humiliation all life, they are finally living a better life abroad.

@@hillnsky5535 It can be painful for people to talk about bad things that happened to them in the past. Of course we all feel bad about bad things that happened in the past but we don't live in the past and we can't change the past. We can remember the past and learn from it, so we don't repeat our mistakes and we must never forget it, but it's not productive or healthy to dwell on the bad things of the past and hold hatred or grudges against what some people did in the past. It can be a challenge to think this way, but I believe we must meet this challenge, in order to move forward and live in peace and harmony.

As a Bhutanese refugee who was born and raised in eastern Nepal and now living in America, I have seen and lived the aftermath of this state sponsored ethnic cleansing of ethnic nepalis. My grandparents were from Panchthar Nepal who migrated to southern Bhutan in early 1900s. My parents were born in Bhutan. Having lived in a refugee camp for 14 yrs, I’ve seen some of the worst human sufferings but nowhere close to what my parents went through just for being ethnic Nepalis in Bhutan. Their traumatic experiences were passed down to us as a bedtime story. Stories I heard growing up were stories of their trauma. Stories of banning nepali language, burning of nepali books and library, murders of nepali teachers to burning villages, physical torture, killings, and rape. Their crime was, they were ethnic Nepalis. Bhutanese government must be held accountable for all these sufferings. What is needed is acknowledgment and accountability for these heinous crime of Bhutanese government. You can never pay back or undo what has already been done. Tremendous human sufferings, the massive psychological damage, undermining of our cultures and resulting refugee crisis that took away even more lives cannot be reversed. What can be done is acknowledgement of what has been done and public apology to all those who suffered at the hands of Bhutanese regime. I think this will bring tremendous peace within the hearts of those who suffered. Bhutanese government to this day denies any wrong doings and pride itself in being the most happy country in the world. You can’t kill, torture, rape and carry out a genocide that cleansed 1/6th of its population and call yourself the most happy country in the world. Bhutanese government has as much blood on its hand as that of hitler.

Did you want Bhutan to become another Sikkim for Nepalese origin people? That is basically what you guys are doing going around. Have some decency and let Bhutan survive its culture and religious traditions. When you go to another country, you respect and become part of that while retaining your own cultural and religious beliefs. You don't try to take over that country esp a small kingdom like Bhutan. Bhutan is not a country for immigrants like USA or some western countries that have colonized other countries. It is its own country that at times need outside population to work. That does not mean they have to be held in the same standard as powerful western countries. It is totally different.

Ngalongs, who live mainly in the central and western regions of Bhutan, are of Tibetan descent; their ancestors arrived in Bhutan in the eighth and ninth centuries. The Ngalongs speak Dzongkha and follow the Drukpa Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, which is Bhutan’s state religion. Bhutan’s king, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, is a Ngalong. The Sharchhops, who live in eastern Bhutan, are descendants of the earliest migrants to arrive in Bhutan; they are of Indo-Burmese origin, speak Tshangla (which is closely related to Dzongkha) and follow the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Together the Ngalongs and Sharchhops are known as Drukpas. The third major group, who differ greatly from the Drukpas in terms of culture, language, and religion, are ethnic Nepalis in southern Bhutan; they speak Nepali and are predominantly Hindu. So, get your facts straight.

Thanks for bringing up this video. Until 1980, Southern Bhutanese used Nepali as the official language. We still have Bhutan's Tax documents written in Nepali. Our grandparents did free physical labour to construct roads in Bhutan. Bhutan's roads were built from free labour of Bhutanese people, not by the autocratic king and his followers.

If people were really interested in learning about this subject, then they would take the time to read the subtitles like I did. And if they found this difficult, they can always press the pause button to take it all in and then do further research in English in language to find out more.. If the maker doesn't have English as his first language, this would be difficult for him. Perhaps you may know someone who would be interested to transcribe the subtitles into English dialogue and dub over the Nepali soundtrack. However, what may help to spread this message would be a note in the title that English subtitles are available.

I've met many many peoples from Bhutan, especially the older peoples they are so deeply scarred and mentally destroyed. Some break down during Therapy, some don't even properly remember their name. I've heard stories from those who were strong enough and were able to share stories. Such horrors, such calamities. Hope they've got the life they deserved and not the life they were forced.

Don't forget that people of Nepalese origin have been in Bhutan since 1620, when Newar craftsmen were commissioned to come to and build a stupa in Bhutan. They have been there ever since. My uncle is still in jail I have gone to visit like 3 times. Somehow he calls us sometimes saying we might not be able to see him again as our family has now migrating to Australia. But it was very nice to learn more about the history that I always questioned.

The year was 1997,i was studying in class 2 at STRBS Pang Parbat , our teachers Mr dev, Miss Puja, Miss Namrata , Mr T.B sir were telling us about this incident why they become refugees. Bhutan always had a fear of supression of growing Nepali Population in the south and another factor was illegal nepali migration and cross boarder marriage with Nepali of Assam and West Bengal. So the King was forced to chase them away with lot of reasons and this is the valid fact how much they try to hide the information. Today the country has once again restored its image as a peaceful nation and accepted this 25% of minority as their citizen. It's just like the partition of Pakistan and India but this one is bit serious as they had to stay in refugee camp of other nation unlike Muslims getting shelter in Pakistan and indian getting home in India. The third world accepted this refugees and now today they live in advanced part of the world like the US. Love you from bhutan great analysis brother

Gorkha Kingdom at its greatest comprised mainland Nepal, Kumaon-Garhwal province in North India in the west to the Teesta River in the east, today in the Darjeeling hills. Ever since, the land has been receding. Owing to this, today our Gorkha community faces identity crisis in our respective countries as well as among ourselves. We have been in so much decline that today, to buy anything relating to our culture, we have to buy from non-Gorkhas. @@Hardik.Lohani For an even bigger picture, look at the Soviet Union and Russia. All the previous Soviet Republics had differing ethnicities, culture and ways. Just like Kumaon-Garhwal differing from Mainland Nepal then or East Nepal being significantly different from West Nepal or Darjeeling hills differing from Mainland Nepal. . Today those previous Soviet Republics are different countries but have the connecting link due to past events. You can whine about it, turn away but that was how it was. We are at a similar situation. It's not about hatred or who did what to whom. Read my previous comment carefully cause there I talk about how those Gorkhas and their legacy is of no use to the current Gorkha population because we have fallen from grace. I did not intend to offend you, it's me talking of our fall and not bitching about you. . If history would have played out any different, we'd be talking differently about these events, but it is what it is. . Relax I'm from India too. I love Uttrakhand. Spent 4 wonderful years there. Thank you brother for this amazing video ❤ as a Bhutanese refugee myself and growing up in camps, I have only heard stories from my parents and other elderly people, it’s great to watch and hear more detailed information/stories. Its definitely heartbreaking when your own government/people doesn’t want to accept you as their own because even though many people in camps were born in Nepal, we were never considered actual Nepali and were accepted by people. So I totally not agree with you in fullest. My brother mo pani nepali ho. Do you even know what might have surely happened if the king didn’t made those changes? There would have been strikes, lots of protests every time the government didn’t meet people’s demand like it’s happening in Nepal and other countries. Just because somebody posted a video for their content growing channel, you started to assume and believe anything they shared. You vividly knows that the Whole of Nepal’s beloved royal family was massacred by their own people. Just think what if the country had two governments, one Bhutanese and one Nepalese (Lhotshampa).. do you think the country Bhutan would stand today as an independent country? The country would have already been invaded or conquered by China or India. You should be really grateful for what the kings of Bhutan did. You need to grow up and think in a broad way rather than having a narrow mind. Be thankful that the country is peaceful and loving compared to other countries.

If we could predict the future then King Birendra of Nepal would have surely appeased his son in some way so that he didn't feel his only option was to kill his parents, his siblings and himself. (If indeed Prince Dipendra did this - some people believe it was not him). But will we ever really know the whole truth behind the Nepali Royal family massacre? Yes, for sure we can be very thankful that today Bhutan is a peaceful and loving country. But maybe we also have to think of the misery, sorrow and pain that many people went through to get Bhutan into this peaceful and loving state today and put ourselves in the position of being Lhotshampa today. Remember they didn't choose to be born Lhotshampa. Actually, the truth can sometimes be hidden, but not forever and there are two sides to this story which need to be considered if we want to see it from a balanced point of view. One side is never usually absolutely right or absolutely wrong There are usually degrees of right and wrong and truths and non-truths on both sides.

Great topic to be noted Those Nepalis who returned to nepali in late 90s are not being driven away or forced to live bhutan . They were the one who were turning back to becoming one people one nation, which means following same tradition wearing gho and kira as national attire but its mystery though. The then king was very farsighted and when he tries to put one nation one people into action they said not to adhere and leave I'm lnotshampa too residing in the southern bhutan.

The cultural homogenization of Bhutan reminds me of the same that happened in Nepal especially under King Mahendra. Like you can't really criticize Bhutan for this if you also support the "one language,one dress,one culture" ethos that itself destroyed Multiculturalism in Nepal,the effects of which is still visible today. Not to be pro Bhutan in this butttt Bhutan is a mirror to Nepal in this.

I completely agree. Mahendra's one country, one language, and one culture policy absolutely ruined the country's livid multi-cultural aspect. The irony is that this is precisely the opposite of what his ancestor Prithivi Narayan Shah wanted, as said in his Divyopadesh. Everyone now speaks Khas Nepali as their first language. And almost no Newah, Tamang, Gurung and Magar children speak their mother tongue. And this is true for most indigenous communities, except for the Madhesi people who have been able to successfully preserve their languages.

What I am talking about though is that the goals of both have been same=Mono-culturalism. I clearly state you can't criticize Bhutan *IF* you defend Nepal's goals of the same as "important for nation building" type excuses that's visible in basically any discourse of matters like revival of ethnic languages. Looks like there are so many vultures waiting for Bhutan to fall. Our visionary leaders bold defiance might have won wreath from those refugees but he did it for our country's prosperity and security. Who told them to posed severe threats on the southern Bhutanese? Jeopardizing the peace and security of the country, if their doings isn't terrorism acts, then tell me what is it? What our visionary and magnificent leader did has purpose. So don't blame Bhutan when they are at fault. Don't talk bullshits when you don't know the depth. Don't be so jealous when you were not fortunate enough to be under his visionary reign.

Some of them are still living in Refugee camps in Jhapa. They refused to go to US in a hope that they could go back to their country. They were chased for demanding democracy. Now that they have got democracy, they should really consider taking them back.

Could you also shed some light on the mass exodus of skilled manpower, like doctors, engineers, nurses, etc. ? Also how the Nepal government is willingly propagating this exodus of youth abroad, just so they can get a taste of that "remittance tax".. P.S. Nepal is going to face a huge shortage of doctors and nurses in the coming 5-8 years. Even, reputed and established doctors are flocking abroad..... all the while, the policy makers do nothing to encourage the retention of this skilled man-power... Sahujis and influential doctors are themselves the policy makers and make policies that helps them gain their personal benefits...

Nope. PadmaSambhava was a Kashmiri Pandit. A mystic he travelled around Himachal, Nepal, Bhutan before going to Tibet where he was invited by the King of Tibet.

As far as i know, Bhutan wanted unity with a national dress and a national language. The southern people rebelled against it, so thats why they were expelled .

Those people never wanted to abide by the law and order of Bhutan. So, they went against Bhutan. They don't even host Bhutan flag in the school, they refuse to wear national dress. Now, when they see peaceful Bhutan, they wanted to destroy the fame of this people country. Who keep these kind of people in the country? Hey people, there are lot of people who speak nepali, and follow their culture. And happily for three decades, one of ten ministers is Lotshampa.

Bhutan king was afraid that 4 out of 10 minister will be lhotshmpa if parliamentary democrasy comes to Bhutan which is inevitable in today’s world, so he made plan to reduce Lhotshampa population from 40% to 20%, now Ngalop power is safe, wangchuk dynasty is safe.
