Billions upon billions of troop. The number of like 5 Millions is ridcilously low! You can't tell me that less people fought a galaxy-wide war then there were soldiers in WW1 or WW2 on our little planet. That's just stupid.

Good point! For roughly 450 billion star in the Star Wars galaxy, and roughly 5-10 planets per star? There would have to be at least 192,000 clones per planet. You have to realize that if all of this was real, then their weapons and war machines would be far more advanced than ours.

Those numbers seem awfully small for a galaxy-spanning army. The German army fielded a total of about 13 million soldiers during WWII, and that's only for one single planet.

***** not really, in his next video, about how big the droid army was...he points out that the entire galaxy only numbers as 100 quadrillion sentient beings in the entire galaxy. While that is a very large number...it is pretty spread out...except for a few planets like Coruscant..which according to Wookipedia only has an estimated 1 trillion inhabitants. It's police force would need to be at least 2.2 billion as for counter-insurgency operations...But Coruscant is also the most populated planet in the Galaxy...so...I would imagine that 691 Million would be a decent starting point for a clone army. It would not be sufficient for the total strength though. On that we completely agree.

Alex G237 Same.because the US military has 2,300,000 troops and we have over 200,000 troops across the world.so in theory if there were about 8million clones that wouldn't be enough to fight off the separatist army across the entire galaxy.and the separatist outnumber the clones by the thousands.meaning there would be a little over a billion clones during the clone wars to fight the separatist army across the entire galaxy.but during the clone wars series it said that the republic was very low on troopers and they wanted an additional 5million clones.so in a war of such a massive scale what would 5million clones make a difference? Meaning in theory the clone army was probably Small,but if they wanted about 5million made and didn't ask for a larger number despite the fact that they were going bankrupt,that would mean that they had a massive amount of clones.

8 million Adeptus Astartes, though... that's a force that could conquer 100 galaxies with resources to spare. A single company of 100 can take entire planets within months, a year or two tops. And 8 million Adeptus Custodes... Dorn's fist, such a force would simply delete enemy armies. Speaking of Dorn, a pre-Horus Heresy imperium... an unstoppable wave of steel and doom the likes of which no universe has ever seen, yet one that struggles to regain long-lost territory within the relative grim darkness of the 31st millenium. 8 million normal, unaugmented humans... more people than that fought in WWII. That's a single planet's worth of troops at best. The God-Emperor of Mankind would weep if ever such a small force were to be brought to bear against his foes. That's an afternoon snack - nowhere near enough meat to jam the grinder that is an Ork _WAAAGH!!!!!_ or a Tyranid hive fleet. War on a galactic scale wpuld require a thousand times that number, at least - and that's assuming there are no rebellions and no civil wars, just continuous expansion.

Are you two high?!A few billion is a joke! Do you realise how large a number that is. A few million would have been fine. It doesn't matter how big the galaxy was or its population. The clone wars wasn't about owning the whole galaxy it was about beating the CIS. Yeah they occupied planets and fought on them but mostly it was about beating CIS armies and fleets around key systems. Not taking and manning every single planet in the galaxy....Add that to the fact that the clones and droids were the only real forces around, and the level of technology, armies now don't need to be many millions strong like they used to, it would be even more so in star wars. Especially with the ability to get to places quick with lightspeed. And just think of the cost and resources. The CIS could not make billions of droids I don't care what anyone says. And the republic would not be able to equipt, supply and transport many billions of troopers. Wasn't that kind of war dudes.
@Erikaaaaaaaaaaaaa
@Erikaaaaaaaaaaaaa 7 жыл бұрын
1xoACEox1 Dude, the US needs 1% of its population in the military just to garrison its bases around the world. In peace time. So no, you're just wrong. 1 quadrillion soldiers would be the number of soldiers the Republic would probably need in *peacetime*
@anakinskywalker2483
@anakinskywalker2483 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah but realistically a war in space would be centered around ship to ship combat rather than ground fighting. Once you gain space superiority or orbital control, you can just send the same ground forces as your previous campaign. You don't need millions of clones for each planet, just use the ones you have in multiple invasions. It's not like the Imperial Era, where you needed billions of Stormtroopers spread across the galaxy to maintain order on each planet.
@1xoACEox1
@1xoACEox1 7 жыл бұрын
Jen'Ari-Asha The US.....but this is star wars......unimaginably more advanced for starters. And this is a space war, something you cant apply modern military to. To repeat what I said, it WASNT about garrisoning every planet. It was beating the CIS on key systems. A lot of the planets wouldn't even have been fought on either because they weren't important or relevant. Others were just fought on and left. Even if you they were capturing a planet the fact that they attack from space means they can strike key areas and that's it. No moving across the globe,garrisoning, supplying etc as you go like our wars would be. Youre thinking of this like the Republic are the US... and you don't understand the war at all.... Youre just wrong.

I always supported the 1 unit = 1 battalion idea because its not possible for just 8 million clones and 10.000 jedi to fight hundreds of millions if not billions of battle droids all across an entire galaxy. Hundreds of trillions (perhaps even quadrillions) pf soldiers would be necessary to fight a galactic war. Just look at the Battle of Berlin in WW2, where the Soviets had more than 2 million soldiers. As such, invading Geonosis with just 200,000 clones is laughable, you can't just invade a planet with hundreds of thousands, you would need billions. It looks like the writers didn't have much of a notion of scale. And yes, I know the clones didn't have to fight every single living being on every planet, but let's face it: both the Republic and the CIS were galactic powers, each controlling several planets. As such, if say, the CIS deploys too few droids (some 500,000) to defend a planet, the Republic would just mass conscript their populace and create an unimaginably large army, using numerical superiority to win. This way, if trillions of soldiers can be recruited for a war (or built, in the case of droids), they will be, ecouraging the existance of huge armies. You wouldn't just field small armed forces when you can afford a large one.

There are thousands of planets and a total population of 100,000 trillion in the galaxy. Lets remember that that number does not contain: -militias -Police forces -Droids, even republic had them, but numbers are unknown. In Clone Wars we only saw Police-droids for Republic -Any automated defenses -local military forces -non-clone Republic soldiers. Admiral Yularen and Tarkin were were just few examples of non-clones in military -Bodyguards, senate guards and any other paramilitary forces -Something else? And lets not forget that Star Wars universe is filled with gigantic urban ares. Urban terrain is relatively easy to defend even with smaller numbers and badly trained troops. And that does not include any automated defenses. Chokepoints further reduce number of troops needed. And you can´t just go to hyperspace anywhere you want, you need to use one of already existing routes that need to be made by manually flying trough that route. otherwise you might fly trough a star - and that is not healthy. So hyperspace lanes create another chokepoint that can be heavily mined and defended with smaller numbers and automated defense systems and local militias and police forces and paramilitary forces and non-clone soldiers and droids and local militaries. Most planets also had lot of resistance when they were occuppied, which meant that you had to deploy large numbers of droids for garrison duties. Considering Republic did not have proper army before clones, there must have been some kind of defenses. Otherwise people like Hutts could just walk in and take over entire Republic. They are not enough to fight war by themselves, but certainly they must have been numerous anyway. You would need millions of Police troopers for Coruscant alone.
@_chew_
@_chew_ 7 жыл бұрын
You can still find similar and even bigger numbers of troops in our own history on this one planet. In all those cases the same points you made also apply (additional security and militia forces not counted as part of the army and choke-points that can be fortified and defended with less troops). If you want to fight a war throughout an entire galaxy you need many more troops than there ever were in any war on earth. 1,200,000 troops in the early stages of the war might be enough to invade a country, but not a whole planet and it's certainly not enough for a galaxy, even if you add all the local militias.

There were some units guarding some important stations or Coruscant itself, but not much else. Even with that in mind, clones were almost always in numeric disadvantage, but were better than droids. Rex mentioned he killed maybe even tens of thousands of them. Clone army could be compared to Legions from Warhammer 40k. Their purpose was to conquer or defend in case of invasion, not to hold each planet in the galaxy.

Considering the war was galactic, wouldn't the number of clones and droids realistically reach the numbers of (let's say) the Imperial guard? I mean we are talking about thousands of systems and millions (maybe billions) of planets. If the war was only fought by a couple billion then there would hardly be any fighting on the scale of the clone wars, not to mention that most systems would be very exposed due to lack of numbers.

Now with battle droid numbers, will you be counting just the basic droid models; B1 battle droids, B2 super battle droids, droidekas, magnaguards? Or would you include the vulture droid, tri-fighters, droid gunships, hellfire tank droids, crab drioids, spider walkers, etc? As they all possessed a rudimentary droid brain, that would mean they could interact with other droids or people. I guess I'll wait till tomorrow then to find out.

When it comes to Legends, I personally would go with the numbers mentioned in “Inside the worlds of Star Wars: Attack of the clones”, a book which puts the number at millions of clone divisions (Corps) undergoing evaluation at the start of the war. I like to think they are being made at a few different points on the planet, with the main one being tipoca city, giving Kamino the room to foster a large army like that. Meanwhile, with the ships they have available, they gather enough troops to fight on Geonosis, and deploy the rest when the war begins. Seeing as how Kamino is the only planet that can make clones until Spaarti technology (which, if I’m correct, deploys clones eight months after the battle of Muunilist, which took place at the last month of 22BBY), they would need to be making billions of clones. They could do that if the planet is one big manufacturing plant for clones, allowing them to farm them for the war, and yet still be outnumbered by the droid forces, albeit with a fighting chance. Now it’s an actual war that can be spread across thousands of Star systems. The only thing I am struggling with is how to organize the army. The System armies need to be stacked with more troops than just 200,000. I like to think that System armies were mainly armies for High Jedi generals like Kenobi and Mace Windu, each of whom commanded one. Meanwhile, there would be bigger armies for whole sectors. A good example of this is the “Fifteenth Army” or Republic 15th Sector army, which was in charge of operations in the Sarin Oversector, also known as Sector 15. I hope this helps.

I loved the video, but thinking about it, million of clones does seem like the actual number. Kamino could only produce so many clones and equipment, considering the clone wars lasted for only 3 years, I doubt the kaminoans had time to produce billions of troops. Even with the spaarti clones, the number still wouldn't reach billions and in the end the GAR didn't need billions of troops. According to wikipedia, legends, the republic had nearly 1.3 million planets during the clone wars. Taking a look at the clone wars TV series, most planets were rural and didn't have a huge population, reducing the need for massive occupation forces and given the fact the most of these underdeveloped worlds weren't strategically important for the CIS, the republic military could cut the number of occupation forces to thousands of planets. Still, thousands requires a huge force, but law and order would be conducted by local planetary security forces, not clone forces. Clones were probably only used to counter separatist attacks and launch new offensives. Now taking into account the CIS army size, while having quintillions of troops is nice, an army is only as efficient as its logistics. According to Mace Windu, the separatist navy was 4 times larger than the republics in terms of warships. While the backbone of the CIS navy was frigates and smaller destroyers, the republic navy had many larger and more powerful warships like the venator class star destroyers. I'm guessing that one venator could take on up to 3 munificent class frigates, allowing the separatists to deploy only one ship load of troops because most of their ground forces would have been destroyed up in space. So in the end, the CIS could have outnumbered the clones 1 quadrillion to 1, but actual combat forces that could be deployed were more like 100 to 1, odds that clones with jedi support could deal with. For theses reasons I think that the clone army could have actually only been a few million troops, while the imperial army would have had to have trillions of troops, considering the imperial military occupied and expanded at the same time, while the republic military was more surgical .

In legends that would definitely be the correct numbers. It seems in the new canon, 1 unit is equal to one clone and in the clone wars they were having debates on how 5 million more clones could bankrupt the republic. Using legends numbers, 5 million more clones wouldn't even be noticed in the budget.

There are 32 clones in a birth UNIT. Obi-wan was told that "200,000 UNITS ready and a million more on the way". That means in canon the can be 6,400,000 individual clones ready to deploy, with 32 million more in development. Then there was the Senate bill for the acquisition of 5 million more clones(or was it units)? So there could have been either 43,400,000 or 198,400,000 according to canon.

Mathematically, you would have a lot of factors to consider. Firstly, how many habitable planets there are in that galaxy. Then, how many of those planets were sophisticated enough to pose a threat, military wise. Then, we would have to factor how many members of those planets are fit for military service and how powerful their military forces are. Now, I understand numbers aren't everything when it comes to winning a military battle. But, even if you occupy that planet, you need to leave a military force large enough to maintain order and to keep their military force from growing again. Earth is a relatively small planet. But, there are 7 billion people here. If there are millions of planets with billions of people on those planets, the amount of soldiers needed to conquer, occupy, and maintain superiority on those planets would be astronomical (no pun intended.)
@TheSchuetzeP
@TheSchuetzeP 7 жыл бұрын
Realistically? From a Military point of view? Well we would need the populace of the known galaxy as a numerical reference, but out of the blue, I would say: To efficiently fight such a war on a galactic scale, on so many fronts, we would need at least 200-300 Million soldiers (considering the level of technology the Star Wars universe at the time of the Separatist Wars is on), which would heavily rely on vehicles and advanced weapon systems. Considering, that the Republic uses their clones not as "soldiers" but as "better droids" (meaning: they are expendable and their lives are not worth anything to the Galactic Senate) would put the number of needed soldiers 4 times as high - realistically speaking of about a Billion Clone Troopers, if not many more.

To realistically fight a war across a galaxy you would need closer to one trillion clones.

I would have thought that when Lama Su said "200,000 units" that he meant 200,000 of the giant circular discs that held the clone's growth tanks. And each one of those I would assume held anywhere from 15 to 20 tanks. So, to me, the number of clones after the additional 1 million units were added would have been anywhere from 18 to 24 million, which is obviously a lot more than if a unit just meant one individual clone, but not quite as much as the 690+ million, which in my opinion is just a little insane.

At first yes, but they eventually got replaced by regular Humans. In Legends though, Darth Vader's 501st legion was still made up of the original Jango Fett clones.

In a military sense the word "unit" almost never means an individual, and considering multiple battles were taking place at any given time throughout the Clone Wars, in addition to the Clones stationed in other parts of the galaxy, the ~600 million number sounds more realistic if not more.

Grand Army-10 systems armies, a total of 3,000,000 units, with Supreme ChancellorPalpatine as Commander-in-Chief.[19] The number 3,000,000 was Sifo-Dyas' initial order, as the number of total clones increased during the war.[4] Systems Army-2 Sector Armies (294,912 units) led by a High Jedi General.[19][4] Sector Army-4 corps (147,456 units) led by a Senior Jedi General.[19][4] Corps/Division-4 legions (36,864 units) led by a marshal commander and a Jedi General.[19][4] Legion/Brigade-4 regiments (9,216 units) led by a senior commander and a Jedi General.[19][4] Regiment-4 battalions (2,304 units) led by a regimental commander and a Jedi Commander.[4] Battalion-4 companies (576 units) led by a battalion commander and major.[4] Company-4 platoons (144 units) led by a captain.[19][4] Platoon-4 squads (36 units) led by a lieutenant, second lieutenant, and sergeant-major.[4] Squad-9 units led by a sergeant and corporal.[4] Using the canon total of units but using the systems army as a unit makes much more sense putting the total number of clones at 1,828,454,400,000 this would easily last up until they began to supplement their ranks with non-clones after the fall of the republic and jedi orders.

For people saying there are too few Clones, realize that they were probably used for offensive purposes first and foremost. As the Clone Wars cartoon showcased, the Separatists and Republic mostly used native militias for defense.

To realistically fight a war over the galaxies, I'd say you'd need over 200 -300 million clones. During WW2 the Soviet Red Army had 34 million soldiers, just to fight a war on one planet and one front.

If a "unit" were to be referring to one of the battalions of 576 troopers (seen on Coruscant), then 200,00 of these would render 115,200,000 clones and the 1,000,000 others spoken of as 576,000,000. This grand total of 691,200,000 would be far more suitable for the core of a galactic army.

@Clee-os6pv

I think more then a few billion is more realistic? Clones aren't just soldiers there are medics, engineers, pilots, clean up crew, police/peace keeper and etc. As well we see clones men starships. A hundred thousand or hundred million is a huge joke for a galaxy of one hundred and quadrillion beings. Battling and having skirmish on different planets as well. Replacements aren't easy and Clones can die like normal living beings. Some Clones will survive battles but doesn't mean they will last long. Let's not forget their enemies the Separatist were equal on technology as the Republic. And at most the Separatist would have more troops either source from cannon or legends then the Republic.

The Clone Army was far larger than 1,200,000 men. According to the "Corps" wookiepedia page, 8 Corps were deployed to the first battle of Geonosis. 1 Corps is equal to 36,864 clones, which would bring the grand total to 294,912 Clones (who fought/were deployed). If 200,000 "units" were ready for deployment in 22 BBY, then a unit can not be an individual clone. So, a unit could be anything from 576 to 9 Clones (A battalion and a squad respectively). In which case the Clone Army would be anywhere from 27,000,000 to 1,728,000,000 Clones. I'm interested to know the total death toll of The Clone Wars.
