One lovely thing about this episode is how natural it is. It wasn't an "issue", just a parallel story about two kids. Dougie didn't have to be deaf, he's just another kid experiencing the world.

I've mentioned before in your comments how much this episode means to me and my daughter. She was born deaf and even though we use ASL, she was still able to recognize that they were signing. She got so excited! We don't see a lot of deaf representation in media, especially for children. It was truly heartwarming!

That’s why I really love The Dragon Prince on Netflix. In college I had a Deaf professor (I was an ASL an Deaf Studies major) and he freaked out when I showed him a clip from that show. “What show is that?! What’s the name?!” The character is so cool too. If you like signed languages in animated shows I highly recommend it. I think it’s also made by the same creators as Avatar The Last Airbender if I remember correctly.

Not showing the original owner is perfect. It shows that the point was never to return Turtle Boy. The point was sharing the joy of playing with him. And the silent joy on Dougie’s face is just so beautiful. It could have been any other kid, but the fact that he’s deaf shows how a “different” person experiences the world in the same way just without sound.

So I'm a second-year ASL student. I was at a friend's house while their younger sister was watching Bluey, this episode was playing. I just happened to glance over at the screen while these two were signing to each other and I did a double take. I knew Bluey already had covered some topics most kids shows don't and did a lot of genuine representation, but I did not expect that I'd see an episode with even just sign language.

I really really adore how they never mention that Dougie is deaf. There’s never a scene where Dougies mom says “I know your deaf, so it’s a good thing I know ASL!”. It’s just left for us to love and observe. I don’t have a single person whom uses sign language in my life. However, this episode holds an immensely special place in my heart. I adore how it’s a great episode even without the deaf representation, and when you include the deaf representation, it becomes straight up beautiful

After watching that episode with my daughter and wife, I said how I loved how they did they made the other child deaf to show how normal it was. My wife was shocked and realized she didn't even notice the child was deaf (she works with kids) until I pointed it out. Thats how good a job they did in making this feel natural.

I’m a CODA a lot of my family are deaf and we use Auslan to communicate. When my niece showed me this episode. I can’t even begin to describe what emotions I went through because of everything in the episode and it’s true to life portrayal of deaf life. Deaf Connect are a great organisation. I made every one watch it and they were all very happy with the representation too. They rarely are represented correctly in media and really appreciated the care and love put into this episode.

I’m not deaf, but I’m hearing impaired and my sibling has autism. My sibling doesn’t watch Bluey, but I love this show because of all the disabled/neurotypical characters and how impactful the show can actually be.

Bluey and Bingo both making friends with other kids despite language/communication barriers is cool

A lesser show would have made the deafness the entire focus of the episode, having the kids ask about it and learn about it, that may well happen later when they meet and become friends. But it is so incredibly smart to introduce the character first as just a normal child who is just like Bingo without ever making a point about his deafness. This way there is no "othering" and kids can see just how normal everything is, so later if they do address it more directly the foundations have already been set. That was such a wonderful move and i can see why the deaf community love it so much. The Bluey creators are truly amazing and deserve all the love and praise they've been getting.

I'm not deaf, but I am disabled too. Technically it's differently abled in my case, but thanks to how society treats my condition it's more appropriate to call it a disability. I have both ADHD and autism as well as hypermobility and a range of mental issues (though these have not been officially diagnosed). And this episode made me cry for real. It makes me so happy when disabled people are able to just live their life and have their needs met by society. To have them been given the accommodations they need. It just makes me happy, because I know how difficult it is when society isn't giving you the accommodations to live in society. I wonder if there's a bluey episode about autism as well. Because the adhd one was handled really well and is a good way to show others how people with adhd aren't dumb, their brain just works a little different. With Sia and Autism Speaks making so much "representation" about autistic people, it time that we get more realistic and helpful portrayals of autistic people and how to interact with them.

Sia really frustrates me as she doesn't listen to other autistic people about our experiences or concerns over her working with Autism Speaks (they have a horrible track record in the USA). I personally consider my autism and ADHD disabilities but its ok if you don't see your experience that way. I'm really glad this episode helped you feel seen and respected. We deserve to live happy lives too. 💜

I've been hearing impaired my entire life. Watching this episode for the first time, I audibly gasped when Dougie started signing. Characters like him and Quill from Moss really make me happy. Today is way different from growing up in the 90's where even adults in my life would call me deaf and dumb. So glad to see the world get a little better for the next generation.

Same! Especially since my parents didn’t want me to learn sign as it would make me have a ‘visible crutch’ rather than being ‘normal’. They were very afraid of me being seen as ‘disabled’. And to be fair the 90’s were still a rough time to be a disabled child as the moment people saw my hearing aids they would automatically start shouting and treating me like I was dumb. That and the only deaf school near me was in the very, very sketchy inner city back then where gang wars were very common (so needless to say I was put through local mainstream education where accommodation was a tooth and nail fight)

Sounds like the team are all genuinely beautiful people, that bit about the real life turtleboy took my breath away, what a remarkably sweet gesture.

There was a message in contrast presented with Bingo wanting to watch TV in setting up the first and second halves of the episode. In the first half, you get the idea she was trying to relax after a trying day when Bandit came in and intervened. In the second half Bingo was fine, but put off when Bandit wouldn't let her do something customary to her; unknown to her, her disposition in the first half had clearly been interpreted the opposite way by Bandit. This really anchors the contrast, and the point I wanted to make, in the connection between Dougie and his Mom; I think it might be the most direct parent-child connection portrayal in the entire show, and we have seen how other parents are shown embracing their children. Sort of like how we all might have watched Dumbo, where he and his Mother clearly had something going on between them despite the former's gigantic ears. Here you get how Dougie and his Mom clearly embrace their time together, adapting seamlessly to having to communicate differently, in contrast to Bandit and Bingo not being able to get the same message across despite being able to communicate directly. And yet, as the titular subject highlights to us, both sides connect over the same comfort factor, meaning that had Bingo and Dougie met face-to-face alternately, they would have connected and Dougie being deaf would have purely been incidental. Had this been the case, the positive representation of deaf people would have gone one step further. Regards, Samuel Farris.

What I appreciate most about Bluey is that they never hammer in a character's differences for a "very special episode." They're just part of society. Normal people. Like it should be. Understanding, but not discrimination.

Aww, your fursona is great, Pugly! Learning that one animator made 200 hand gestures so that Auslan would be depicted accurately and well genuinely made me tear up. That shows not only sincere dedication to this wonderful show itself, but also, to communities that historically been represented disrespectfully or lazily, or often, not at all.

This video is so perfectly analyzed. For me, the episode "Turtleboy" is not actually an emotional episode but it is a very enjoyable and joyful episode. And here is a few things that I thought were interesting for me: 1. The reason why Bandit turned off the TV is because he wanted Bingo to go out and explore more often instead of watching TV all the time at home. XD 2. The Introduction of Turtleboy and Dougie (whom I thought was so adorable). 3. I get to learn the actual meaning and purposes behind the Auslan language and how the animators execute this message perfectly. 4. The fact that you mentioned that Bingo's and Dougie's family mirror each other with dialogue and a possibility that Dougie and Bingo might meet together for the first time, I thought that was something that I never knew right up to now and I am actually excited for this. 5. Finally, when both Dougie's mum and Bingo's dad say "the done thing", I think the done thing means that Turtleboy is meant to stay put in where it is actually belonged: which is the playground where Bingo and Dougie played.

You have no idea how much I appreciate that the signing is fully animated. Similar to playing an instrument, animating signing is really complex and usually above budget so in the rare few instances where signing is shown, its usually done in still images or purposely hidden for anything more than a simple sentence. Its still nice to see any representation, but it makes such a difference when animators take the time to actually show it (and have it be grammatically correct, which is a different topic)

While I’m not deaf nor Australian, I did take American Sign Language back in HS for my “foreign” language class. My first teacher was half-deaf (used to be fully deaf), and my second has a child who is deaf, and they were both amazing teachers, miss them lots. The language is quite amazing, I loved everything about it. Although it’s been many years, and unfortunately I’ve suffered from a bit of memory fog, so I don’t remember everything I was taught during those classes, but I kept every single paper given to us, I can relearn it when I get the chance to. This episode made me super excited when I first watched it, I always love seeing deaf representation, when done right of course!

I'm an Indigenous person (Swampy Cree of Canada) and I like to head cannon that Dougie is Indigenous (or at least half Indigenous) because his mother is played by Larrakia actress Miranda Tapsell. This episode is one of my favourites and I just love the little dialogue bit of Dougie's Mum saying "FOUND YOU" when Dougie finds Turtle Boy.

Yes!!! When my little brother first got diagnosed with autism, in his speech therapy, he was given a Velcro notebook that showed him how to speak using sign language. My mom’s brother is also deaf, so she already knew sign language. This episode is soo perfect and the team who makes Bluey is truly amazing

I really want to learn ASL some day, just in case I need to help a member of the deaf community. My dad is hard of hearing and my boyfriend is definitely losing his hearing over time too, so I might just need it in my daily life sometime sooner than expected. It always warms my heart when I see any of the sign languages represented in media. They have a soft spot in my heart.

This is the way to show a disability. Its respectful of the i dividual and displays their humanity with out patronizing or infantalizing the individual. A pity more shows can't figure out how to do this.

I have never watched bluey yet but now i really want to. I learned sign language because I live in an area full of deaf people and wanted to understand the deaf community as a whole. I hope more shows try to tell a similar message in a similar fashion. I think I'll give it a watch with my family and pets too.

I cried/reared up watching and I am crying watching/listening to the deep dive. Since age of 9 i don't remember why but I became DEEPLY obsessed and interested in ASL and the d/Deaf communities teaching myself (I thought ASL but wound up being) 'signed exact english'. Im not fluent but I know enough to be communicative. I love seeing this type of thing like when I realized the second guy in blues clues signing (he signed "smart" during that little song and one or two others)

I really enjoyed this exploration- I don’t actually watch the show because I’m much too old and it doesn’t interest me, but I think deaf representation is very important. A small thing- I think it’s generally good to always do captions, and not just for a special occasion.

I always get so excited when videos have subtitles. I have auditory processing issues, so it's often really difficult for me to understand what someone's saying because the words just blend together.

I'm not deaf, but I do have epilepsy, and have fits as a result. Because of this, I bite my tongue pretty bad during fits and it makes it hard and painful to talk and eat while I'm healing, so I began to learn BSL from two close friends who know the language a lot better, so it's easier to communicate when I've had a seizure. I've taught my little siblings some things in BSL, and I enjoy watching Bluey with them, my sister especially, so seeing a child character that uses sign language makes me really happy.

I'm not deaf, I'm not close with anyone who is deaf, but sign language has been a huge part of my life since I was literally a baby (I'll do a story if you want) and this episode literally made me jump up, and yell out loud "He's deaf! He's signing!" at 2AM when I first watched the episode. I love the creators of Bluey for them putting so much attention to detail in these episodes.

I dont watch a lot of childrens media but this is one of my nephews favorite shows. I was born profoundly Deaf and while I was also Mainstreamed to speak vocally I use sign for a lot of communication. My nephew watched this episode and wanted me to see it, and I am very glad I did. It did make me sort of tear up just because i remember being a Deaf child and never really seeing representation at all- if there was it was a 'Very Special episode'and felt more like a spectacle/freakshow than something natural. I am also very impressed by how much work the team at Ludo went into for the signing and having contact with Deaf Connect. Thank you also for the captioning- you have no idea how BAD the autocaptions KZfaq has, and how many youtube channels dont have captions. Its a little thing, but it just feels nice to be included- be it with a single youtube video or a single cartoon episode about talking dogs

I hope Bingo and Dougie met and became friends. I would've loved just a background thing of Bingo trying to learn Auslan, but while she learns they find other ways to communicate like drawing or writing on a pad to talk to each other. I had that experience once when I worked retail. Deaf-mute guy would come in frequently to browse movies and I started trying to learn ASL to try to help him more. He said my "accent" was terrible but appreciated the effort. Said it was easier to just trade notes through my phone.

Ohhh- learning just how much effort and detail they put into it makes me tear up toooo- I really really wish people teach kids on different ways to communicate than just speech. I’ve always struggled with speaking since a young age and while speech therapy did help in some ways, I still have good and bad days. I kinda wish I had the opportunity to learn sign as a kid so I can still communicate and function on these bad days. BUT!! I am taking asl classes in college now! On my second class now and I just love it so much!! It just feels right to do it :)

Now this is how you do representation. The representation isnt ham-fisted. It isnt stereotypical. It isnt portraying the character as some kinda super special super hero or something. They are just a regular person like everyone else who just happen to belong to a certain group. Them being in that group isnt called out, made the focus of the episode, made their entire personality. They just are. They are just a regular person. That's fantastic.

I remember learning Auslin back in year one or two (around the age of 6 or 7) but only remember learning the numbers through 1-19. Now I'm in year 8, and the flashbacks are coming back to me.

When I first saw this episode, I loved it because the only other deaf representation I saw in a kids show was in Handy Manny when I was 6, so I was really happy to see another Disney show I watched have some deaf rep in it. When my parents saw it however, they said it was an ok episode, which I was taken aback by since I thought they would’ve appreciated the deaf rep a bit more. I then started thinking that it was silly of me to like the episode solely because of its deaf rep and not the story, but seeing this video and all the work the staff put into making this episode as accurate as possible, I appreciate Turtleboy a lot more now. I love the deaf rep and the storyline even more, and seeing the irl Turtleboy just makes me so happy, I really hope he stays there for as long as possible. Ty for making this video about this incredible episode ❤

Its a good way to show that deaf people are no different than non-deaf people (except in the way they communicate) by running the two stories in parallel.

In Australia, I have a crochet group I go to on Wednesday morning and have someone there who is partially deaf, I asked her to translate some of the words from Auslan from the Bluey episode because the mother dog was going too fast for me lol, I also know a lot of other words from her now as well.

One of the things I like about this episode is that the lesson isn't fundamentally about interacting with deaf people or being deaf. It's just a simple life lesson that applies to children regardless of hearing ability. It's not an example of using deafness as a tool for the purpose of educating non-deaf people. The deaf kid isn't presented as fundamentally different to other kids. That could have easily told the story without a deaf character. It's just a show that includes a deaf kid who speaks sign language.

There are companies that produce children’s shows that keep to a formula to teach life lessons or to provide entertainment with bright flashy colors. There are a few special companies that go above and beyond to teach the truly special life lessons that the formula doesn’t cover in a tasteful way. I think we all know which one this falls into.
