Bombardier’s engineering teams have been given the freedom to explore a wide range of technologies in its quest to drive carbon out of air transport. The eye-catching blended wing design of its EcoJet technology demonstrator models may also prove to be a template for new business jets that could run on hydrogen and other new propulsion systems. Incremental reductions in carbon emissions might even come sooner than expected as proven new technologies are introduced to Bombardier’s family of private aircraft.

The blended wing design has been theorized, postulated, proposed, but never built or demonstrated since 1995. Please, someone commit!

@@phillm156 I only meant it as a reference - that it isn't just a theory but an actual working prototype is currently in use already. Yeah, it's 2 billion dollar gadget, but we do have a real, demonstrated, successful version of the concept. I used to be very skeptical about such a design earlier - almost in denial, until B-2 blew us away.

One of the most important tests is how much it will take in more material, added weight, complexity, and cost>? For it seems weight and materials look to be a much larger and more considerable part of the makings of these crafts... That has to be fully researched into it... For it seems most likely to take 30 to 40 more materials than present-day types, but if it can be done reasonably with controlled cost and material. Yes then maybe with a good design ( Wait and See ) and all the safety work to finish a fully rounded production product model that meets all the requirements of today's top aircraft designs...

@@mitseraffej5812 Yeah but they won't. Haven't you noticed by now money is the ultimate tool to bludgeon others with or buffer yourself from others... To quote a clip from a rich white woman in Los Angeles regarding public transport, "I'd rather leave L.A. than take the bus" now amplify that level of toxic classist nonsense and now you see why the truly spoiled and awful fly private. They'd rather DIE than share common air with the likes of you and me... The next best thing? Short buses for these "special people" and make sure they are carbon-free. Then make them spend all their money on these things which is a truly awful idea but keeps them from away from US! ;-)

Without the commitment to hydrogen and investing into the research necessary to get there (with Airbus e.g.) that's Greenwashing at it's worst... It's not even a blended wing. Only marketing talk! 💙

@@MrDschubba Well, Nasa might not be on the edge of tech nowadays. Of course it is a challenge, yet without it mass aviation will be gone in a few decades and in this case i really wish that private aviation for the 1% goes down with it. To achieve sustainability aviation has to be slower not faster, less not more, hub centered and not point/point - and this isnt some agenda dear americans... this is the logic conclusion. 💙

blended wings are totally unsuited for streched or shortened configurations. The engine location is a night-mare and the tail travels well in the wake of the wing - hello FC get sleepless nights as well. Forget about accumulators. Even the latest ones will blow the plane to hundreds of tonnes even for short distances.@@gary2389

They are talking about future propulsion options including hydrogen, SAF or electric. It's designed as a plug and play exercise for when those materials mature... Which is shortly... Even plug and play hydrogen with ZeroAvia is a thing... And it was almost with Universal Hydrogen which was a good idea just not well financed apparently...

Yes, blended wing and body aircraft have been designed for decades, and a few have even been built. Most are relatively large - the B-1 Lancer supersonic bomber is a well-known example, and it is big: 216,000 kg maximum take-off weight.

Hydrogen is no good to store but could use synthetic hydrocarbon fuel, either in conventional jet or in fuel cell. Also we are about to have open contact with ET cultures so that is quite the wildcard for aviation. All this is going out the window.
