How Brazil completely failed Marta, one of soccer's greatest players ever

Brazil's Marta is one of the greatest ever to play soccer. She gave her home country years and years of elite play, including some jaw-dropping moments of brilliance, yet she and Brazil never won a Women's World Cup.
This episode of Untitled explores the obstacles that prevented Marta and company from hoisting the trophy. Those obstacles include critical moments on the field, like disastrous penalty kicks and one legendary United States header. The main, overarching obstacle, though, is Brazilian soccer infrastructure itself. From grassroots to pro leagues to the national team, soccer-playing girls and women in Brazil have never received the boost that built their male counterparts into great, Cup-winning sides. In fact, Brazilian women were banned from playing soccer for a huge chunk of the 20th century.
Winning it all takes talent, timing, and institutional support. Marta always had the first thing and sometimes got the second thing, but never enjoyed the third. Brazilian soccer authorities failed Marta and her teammates. This is how it went down.

Robbed them how? Fact of the matter is, you can't make people care... Yeah, sure, women's soccer has a niche following, but it's several orders of magnitude smaller than the men's market is. And I got news for you, the size of the market for each sport has nothing to do with women's programs being underfunded. Because if that were the case, the USWNT wouldn't have just lost their lawsuit over "equal pay". Turns out that when you collectively bargain for your salaries, you then have no case to stand on for saying "we're not paid equally". Yeah we know, the women actually get a better deal than the men, even though the money pool is substantially larger on the male side.

@@lorenzodecabo3040 Yeah, as badly as Brazil has treated their women's team, Argentina has somehow managed to do even worse-- they all but disbanded it in 2016. They did manage to qualify for the 2019 world cup and put up a brave showing there, but the team, outside of one or two players, lacked quality (essentially because they lacked adequate training and funding). These issues are not hard to solve. They just require resources (and not even that many resources, at that-- we're talking probably single-digit millions of dollars to adequately fund a professional women's national team, which is a drop in the bucket compared to most men's sports team budgets). Sometimes it's really that simple.

She's arguably one of the ten best female athletes of all time, although it's always hard to make cross-sport comparisons (and we'll never know how good someone like Florence Griffith Joyner would have been if the whole of athletics at the time hadn't been riddled with drug cheats-- she was cheating, but so was everyone else). I'm trying to think of who I'd put in front of her... probably Katie Ledecky and Lindsey Vonn, Krisztina Egerszegi, Larisa Latynina, Valentina Vezzali, maybe Lisa Leslie or Diana Taurasi... that's about it. Maybe Mary T. Meagher and Janet Evans if you don't mind overrepresenting the swimmers. An interesting exercise, but ultimately a frustrating one since so many great women athletes have cut short their careers due to lack of support. At any rate, it's ridiculously stupid that such a generational talent was left to toil in obscurity for so long.

@@mrsb50 That's fair. No question she'd be on the list if she wins a bunch of medals in Tokyo. In Olympic sports I tend to value repeating a lot more than just dominating one Games. But Biles has done so much work at Worlds, etc that she deserves to be on there even if she gets hurt or whatever and doesn't dominate a second Olympics. Speaking of repeat champions, you could make an argument for Kaori Icho too-- I believe she's the only four-time back to back champion in the same event ever on the women's side, although I might be misremembering that. As impressive as that is, though, my sense is that women's wrestling in its early days was not as competitive as the other sports I mentioned-- the US didn't even start taking it seriously until the mid-2010s.
@mrsb50
@mrsb50 4 жыл бұрын
Paul Thomas totally, if you’re going by Olympic medals then I get it. Given that Biles became age eligible the year after 2012 and has to wait at least a year longer for what would’ve been 2020, it’s really only bad timing that’s keeping her medal count low (by her standards). She got second in an early 2013 competition but hasn’t lost since then, neither domestically nor internationally. I can’t stress how much better she is than the rest of the field, and she’s only continued to improve year after year. (It sounds like you know all of this already but I thought it was worth repeating for anyone who’s unfamiliar with her dominance.) I don’t know anything about women’s wrestling, in comparison, so I’ll need to read up on Kaori Icho!

Marta was the biggest star of a great generations of brazilian female footballers that had their well deserved recognition despite what the country offered her. Brazilian federation is guilty of everything you said in the video but their harm to brazilian football goes even deeper and hits brazilian male squad (7x1 could have been avoided if they didn’t hire a washed out coach in felipão, for example) and brazilian teams (some bigger teams are taking a stand now against them). The football teams can survive even when playing terrible football for brazilian standards. The male squad lost a lot of support from people and is struggling to have this interest back. But for the female squad, this can be fatal. We don’t seem to have another good generation coming due to the lack support and, even though players like marta took a brave stand and made some changes (like some big football clubs having now female teams), unfortunately the brazilian football federation just doesn’t care enough. They are destroying brazilian football little by little (lots of recent federation’s former presidents are in jail and banished from football forever). Thank you for this video as it put some light on the dark side of brazilian football. These women are heroes and inspiration for brazilian people for fighting against adversities and speaking up against injustices. Marta is our biggest football hero in this century.

Im Half Brazilian. Shes the greatest female player of all time individually. U.S has the best collective talent, but the best individual talent and "Joga Bonito" skill is def Marta. Even against the duels against the U.S Marta was the best player on the field, and outisde Christiane, she really had no collective help. U.S is not as talented or flashy but the fundamental playing style of the U.S which is based on team exectution from multiple players and defense is why the U.S is the greatest team in Womens soccer of all time. We came close so many times to beating them, so the ability was there but not enough team effort, even one exhibition game the U.S came back from like 3 goals down, So I question even heart from Brazil. But not Marta. After the 2011 World Cup where she balled out, and Neymar was still 19, I remember the men struggling either in a tournmanet or exhibition and the crowd starting chanting for Marta. She has the peoples support, but the government support is still backwards. They think they in Saudi Arabia. Bless Marta. Goat.

I've really loved how of late the channel has covered more women's sports! It's fantastic and they (particularly this and Candace Parker's dunk video) provide great factual insight to how across countries stereotypes and misogynistic views have damaged women's sports and it's perception. Great job and keep 'em coming.

FIFA should have a rule that if a country fails to pay the promised amount to its women's team the men's team is barred from any international competition. Also, if the investment in the women's team is less than 72% of the men's team the men's team is barred. Then see what happens.

John Dogan The Spanish have a tendency to be upset or play poorly when it really matters or lose in heartbreakers But with that said, the US don’t make it (they lost to Trinidad and Tobago when trying to qualify) I respect the Spanish, but I think they should probably win a title soon with what they have in the roster I’m not Spanish, but this is just my opinion (I don’t mind If you roast the US, I think they suck)

LaV72 they did have a excellent defensive coach in 14 which is why they won all there games by one goal or fewer and honestly don’t just look at 18 and 14 look at the years before that those teams were loaded that 06 squad needs more attention in the messi era they had 3 really good chances on paper and failed
