They say sharing is caring, well, not sharing is beef. It doesn't rhyme, but it's still true. As proof I submit: Pelé and Maradona. They could not share GOAT status, and instead sniped at each other for decades. And actually, now that I think about it, sharing is kinda BS. It's never even. When Fifa tried to make these two legends share the title of Player of The Century, Fifa had an obvious favorite (Pelé). So in this case sharing lead to even more beef...
You head it here first, sharing isn't caring, call the rhyming dictionary I've got a retraction.

@@ezra7723 At the time, there were no such thing as "bigger clubs in Europe", in fact they're not even better. In Pelé's days, the international tournament between SA and Europe was the Intercontinental Cup which was dominated by South American clubs The 1966 beating took at the hands of Portugal mentioned in the video was because Santos ABSOLUTELY DEMOLISHED Benfica 5 x 2 , the Champions of Europe. Benfica who in turn had demolished everyone in Europe and yet they couldn't handle Pelé. Back then, Brazilian clubs used to tour Europe and get huge results, there's even an anecdote of Garrincha scoring 5 times, which prompted his coach to ask him to stop as to not embarass their host, which Garrincha responded by leaving the whole defensive system in shambles, rounding the keeper, getting to the line and turning back.

The issue is that in recent years, Maradona let his football do the talking, while Pele and Santos decided that they need to remind everyone every single second that he was an amazing footballer. Like the time when Ronaldo became the player with the most club goals in history (I believe thats the statistic) and then Santos suddenly came out with an extra 300 or so goals for Pele. The revisionist history about that era in football is astounding. Maradona played in an era where the average of the players was of a much higher quality, where he played in a foreign country almost his entire career (as opposed to the Brazilians in the 60s where they all stayed in Brazil), and he wasn't playing surrounded by some of the greatest players of all time.
@MegaHariboboy
@MegaHariboboy Жыл бұрын
@@herrerasauro7429 That is simply not true. Between 1960-1970 (Peles peak years), European teams won the Intercontinental Cup 7 times to South American teams 4 times. In 1962, Benfica didn't 'demolish' everyone in Europe. They only won the semi final of the European Cup 3-2 on aggregate. There ABSOLUTELY were such things as 'bigger clubs in Europe'. Real Madrid for example, by then Puskas and Di Stafano had already played for them. In 1963 when Milan played Santos, Milan ABSOLUTELY DEMOLISHED Santos by 4-2. However Santos won the second leg and then won the tie in extra time. See how your example is pretty dumb? Milan and Manchester United had already been around for over 10 years longer than Santos had. To try to claim that South American club football (especially Brazilian clubs) in the 60s and 70s was some kind of sphere of excellence that no other continent could come close to is the exact reason why so many people are fed up of Pele. If South American teams were so good, then why did Pele score '1000' goals against primarily them?

The very final is proof that this wasn't an "very average" team. Beckenbauer sent Matthäus to cover Maradona, thinking that with Maradona out of the equation, West Germany would coast to an easy win, even at the cost of taking Matthäus out of the equation too. He had to revert actions, freeing Matthäus of his warden role, after Argentina got a commanding 2-goal advantage. And, man! Burruchaga showed a big pair of balls when scoring the winning goal! Running against Schumacher, who nearly killed (no exaggeration) Battiston on a similar play 4 years before, requires a level of courage not found on a "very average" player

This episode is good but it does not lean into one of the most important aspects of this beef. Pelé is brazilian, Maradona is argentinian. When it comes to football there's is much respect on either side, but also a fierce rivalry between the two countries. It is only natural that the two best players ever for each country would be caught up on that. On a side note, the argument that the brazilian league in the 60's and 70's was weaker than europe is stupid. That was the golden age of brazilian football, when when won 3 out of 4 world cups with homegrown talent. That league was the strongest and most competitive in the world at the time. My hometown Cruzeiro even beat Pelé's Santos at his peak 6-2 on our way to a national title. Brazil's 70 seleção featured players from many brazilian squad that were overflowing with talent then. It was very close to the american basketbalk dream team in the Barcelona olympics.

@@herrerasauro7429 Not only Benfica. They thrashed Barcelona, they thrashed Milan. Nearly every main European team of that era saw themselves losing against Santos. The only exception was Real Madrid, but because Santiago Bernabéu himself ordered that the main team had to rest for a week, while Santos came on a frantic, 3-games-a-week schedule. Real won a close game, despite Santos playing tired. Bernabéu would then reject anyone from Santos asking for a rematch, perhaps knowing that his team lucked out that game. If the president of the team that had just won 5 European Leagues trembled by the notion of losing a rematch against a team that would probably arrive tiresome due to a load of matches played in so little time... That pretty much sums up how freaking powerful was Santos.

Jordan also had a kind of perfect carreer (two three-peates, etc.), whereas Lebron is the phisical beast that can do it all. It also usually gets mixed with discussion about values and choices each player made. Lebron changed teams a handful of times, Jordan didn't. I think most Brazilians have no idea the effect Pele had on people far away from Brazil. In his prime every kid in Africa wanted just to be Pele. For the populace in large Pele was on mythological par with the likes of the Greek gods like Zeus. His name was synonymous with lightening, tornedo or hurricane. He was the mega force, the atomic bomb of soccer. To Africans when someone mentions Pele there is only one thing that comes to mind BRAZIL and when someone mentions Brazil, there is only one name that comes to mind PELE! Brazil=Pele and Pele=Brazil. Period! He is the first and last Brazilian to put Brazil right on the world map. Because of Pele Africans till now LOVE and root for the Brazilian team. He engraved the Brazilian yellow jersey and the legendary number 10 on every non Brazilian man, woman and child. On every African country sport radio broadcasts, there was only megastar that controlled the air waves, Pele!. Legend has it that people used to kiss the ground he walked on. I can go on and on about his legends. The words "GOAT" or "King of soccer" don't do any justice to him. He was bigger than the game itself. He overshadows the entire game. Without him, soccer has no meaning at all. He is the father and soccer is just his little kid.

I remember being in a hospital recovering from a surgery and when I woke up, Brazil secured qualification for the 2010 World Cup… In Argentina… Against Argentina… With Maradona as coach. I never saw the match. I just saw the highlights. And Maradona's face said it all. Edson Arantes do Nascimento wasn't that KIND of a person, but when playing soccer and turning on Pelé mode, he was simply unbeatable in his prime. Diego Armando Maradona was a brash, a rebel, but a maestro of maelstroms when it comes to soccer. I just hope Pelé and Maradona have a good conversation about their lives on earth while in heaven…

Pelé is a gentleman, and Diego was your crazy lad with a big heart. In the end they truly respected each other and took the time and effort to make it known to each other and the public. You see it all the time in other rivals/colleagues like Messi and Cristiano, Jobs and Gates, Magic and Bird, and so on

I've shown clips of Maradona to people that knew nothing about soccer - and they are always mesmerized. Then I'll do the same with Pele - and if they're still awake after 3 minutes they ask me to find someone else like Maradona. Pele was rated by his inflated goal count in a different time in a league of much lesser quality. He was an athlete that had amazing players with him. Diego was alone in Argentina. A typical goal from Pele was getting a cross from one of his teammates and putting the ball in the net. Maradona's goals were dribbles from midfield where he would elude half the opposing squad one after the next before finally beating the goalie as well. Maradona revolutionized the game. There were things he did with the ball that no one could or would even think to do before him. Pele was a good athlete surrounded by other great athletes. He's not even the best Brazilian player. He's not even the best Brazilian player of his generation. He's a FIFA hype job and that's why when they didn't get the results they wanted in the online poll they moved the goal posts and made themselves the voters.

Pele revolutionised football and made it global even when there was no tv coverage. During Pele era video coverage was still evolving that why it looks dull and during Diego era video coverage was now on colour. Just like saying sci-fi movies of 2022 has more interest to the audience to sci-fi of 1990. Pele made the #10 jersey the iconic number wore by the best player in the team. About playing in a lesser league during Pele's era south America countries were dominating football If the best of south American players like Messi, Neymar, Anderson, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Aguero, Maradona were all playing in their countries league will u call it a lesser league, during Pele era the best south American players played south American league. Pele revolutionised football globally while Maradona modernized it globally
