How BRUSH MILEAGE makes you a better artist ✶ Loose gestural watercolor landscapes

Today I wanted to share some quick, loose watercolor landscapes and talk about brush mileage. I do lots of these studies in order to develop my understanding of color, water control, mark making and muscle memory. Getting the brush mileage in is the best way I know how to progress as an artist. This is the main reason my skills have grown over time. #watercolor

Thank you Sarah for this inspiring video. I have watched it several times before and constantly need reminding that there is no shortcut to improving my art. As a runner I am familiar with the concept of getting the mileage in and having learnt a musical instrument the importance of practise! Why should painting be any different? Great that you find ways of enjoying the process. I have made a notebook to log my brush mileage and ideas so there's no excuse!!😄

I love your expressive landscapes! Seeing others’ artwork inspires me, as well as listening to music that paints a picture in its own way. Photos are also very inspiring, especially if you can’t be somewhere. I do have the fear of messing up/wasting supplies sometimes, but I logically know that I learn something from each piece and it’s therefore never a waste.

Hi Sarah..im a huge fan of your artwork.. I am keen to follow your lead and create my own palette but I don't want to just copy yours. As I live in Australia, our colours in nature are quite different to yours ( for eg, our greens are more ochre, our skies are a different blue and our water is more aqua and bright) So I was wondering if you might ever consider doing a video explaining or teaching us how to customise our palette colours to our own surrounds..for eg, how to pick out which colours are in our own surrounds and match them in paint colours. I am sure many other people in the world would be interested too. Thank you for being such a great teacher 🙏❤

Hmm that's an interesting idea! I never thought about explaining it in that way. I choose them because 1. I like them, 2. they help me paint my surroundings...so yea it makes sense to touch on that side of it. I'll consider that for a video

I tend to switch back and forth between landscapes and abstracts. Usually, the landscapes are more controlled and the abstracts more free. But my latest major abstract series involved painting different colors within small areas marked by black marker. The paintings turned out interesting and sometimes weird. It's not the first time I've gotten pretty OCD about a series. It seems to be a way I can work for a while, keeping focused on one concept to carry me through days of work. I've just decided to go with it, letting my process sort of determine itself, if that makes sense.

I truly love the experience of flowing colors. So I often just focus on that. The landscape is sometimes secondary. I can do hundreds of sketches like these and be in my total happy place, with no reason except that I love seeing the paint do it's thing!

What do you do with the gestural practices? Keep? Sell? Put on a shelf and forget? I often think about waste when I am doing practices and worry about costs and time wasted away from other 'finished' pieces.
@SarahBurnsStudio

Change your mindset. It's important to practice. It's part of the process. Good luck getting really good at drawing anything without going through LOTS of "bad" sketches! Same way you can't learn an instrument without hours of agonizing repetition.

Thanks for this, Sarah (BTW, are you Sairah, as in Stare, or Sarha - as in Star?). I spent a lot of time doing the same drawings over and again in different media and on different papers 'just for fun', because "What if I do this ... or this ..." is a key part of who I am and how I enjoy and develop the things I do. I learned a lot about techniques, colour, etc and those 'studies' are now a specific section in my teaching folder. After watching this video, I'm thinking that maybe it'd be helpful for me to do this again, after the five years of 'almost nothing' art-wise (because of a *very* busy five years otherwise!) and now teaching art again, plus the current lack of freedom to go out in the car to explore en plein air. It'd be good to do, just to be free to be 'me' with different tools in my hand and different media to paint with. Thank you. The 'me' does pop up at unexpected moments, such as last week. Having done some random colour mixes (ie not in neat boxes) on scrap paper, I saw faces in each one, and now have a series of people wearing hats instead of paint blobs on the paper which *isn't* going into the recycled paper bin! Incidentally, there was a beautiful seal pup on the ice at 4 mins 27. I'd just spotted it when you swiped across it with your brush.

@@SarahBurnsStudio Yes. imagination is an amazing gift - as we've said before, squashed out of the majority in our art by our education system - and something I love to to do is to encourage those who've been 'squashed' to begin to look and to 'see' again. One of the biggest joys of teaching is when, at some point along the way (often at the end), they'll say, "Thank you. I see so much more now when I look around me." Colour, shapes, patterns, light and shade... They may never be great artists, but they understand the 'how-to' and enjoy what they are doing. However, far more than that, when they tell me how it's enhancing their everyday lives in the way they look at the things around them, I know I've done a good job.

Hey Sarah, do you happen to have any advice or tips for people that associate art with stress so they avoid painting because it stresses them out. I unfortunately had college made me associate it with stress so I tend to avoid it which is really sad and I don't know how to fix that.
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 3 жыл бұрын
It is helpful to understand WHY it stresses you out.. Is it fear of messing up? Fear of someone judging you? Fear of not achieving what you hope? Once you know that, remove the barrier. If it's fear of messing up, remember that every single artist to ever exist has messed up. A lot. That's how we learn. It's a natural part of the process. If it's fear of being judged, then don't show anyone. Do it purely for yourself. For your own enjoyment. Just try throwing some colors around for the joy of color. If you are afraid of not achieving what you expect/hope for - that is also very common. As we develop our skills, we also develop or "eye" for what looks right. Our expectations raise. Our aesthetic changes over time. It's a constant back and forth between learning and trying, learning and trying.

Love your gestural sketches, they feel free, unforced ...but why only 10%?! Do you mean to say, that the rest 90% are never shared? That would be terrible... I feel inspired when I see or feel something that cannot be captured by a camera. The feeling of being on the river bank, with lots and lots of blue damselflies fluttering about, (recent one)for example. Or, years ago, me and my older daughter went to the zoo and sketched animals, very quickly, literally couple of seconds for each. Now she is all grown up, graduating from uni, and recently I found this sketchbook with our sketches and the feeling of this connection to the past is something, that cannot be produced by anything else, only our pencils at that time...no camera could do that for me. That's why I love sketches even more than finished paintings, they are unabridged version of your personal view in the fleeting moment when they were being made. Cannot wait for your book, sounds very appealing! 👍
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I get that! There's just way too much to share because I would have to be posting all day every day. The other side of it is that many of the sketches are almost abstract and just purely meant to experiment, so it's stuff I imagine people have no interest in? Then again, I do enjoy seeing lots of sketches by artists I admire. I do share quite a few sketches and progress stuff on Instagram stories though!
@ellenp7455
@ellenp7455 3 жыл бұрын
@@SarahBurnsStudio Are you kidding me? How inner workings and experiments of the artist could be not interesting?! Abstract or not. Abstract even better (maybe), because you don't have to hold on to any recognisable form.. Sometimes recognisable forms appear by themselves 😃 It's a bit like cloud gazing - I don't suppose someone makes them to resemble some form,but I swear I saw a hippopotamus in the sky only yesterday! 😃
