I've Been Thinking Workshop

6 жыл бұрын

I realized that I was literally throwing money on the ground by putting out bird seed that was mostly going to waste, sitting on the ground. So, I had the bright idea to build myself a nice-sized bird feeder! Watch this video to see how I built it.
UPDATE: Plans to build this feeder are now available! Use this link to access the plans: ivebeenthinking.net/products/...
Some of the tools I used to build this feeder:
Here are some of the tools I used in this video:
This is My Woodworking Shirt - amzn.to/2PaG3Er
EZ Smart Universal Edge Guide - amzn.to/2Dk86v8
Hitachi KM12VC 2-1/4 HP Router Kit - amzn.to/2DjyNQv
INCRA Mast-R-Lift II Router Lift - amzn.to/2GlgwFP

Glue on butt joints doesn't work very long inside, much less outside. You have to have some sort of joinery or mechanical fasteners if you expect it to last.

What you do need: Circular saw or hand saw. Jig saw or hand powered version. Belt sander or hand planer. Vibrating sander or sand paper. Carpenter's triangle. Dremnel/detail grinder or sandpaper and dowel. Drill & drill bits Your choice of wood sealer, glue and non-rust fasteners as I agree that glue only is a bad idea. Optional: Jigs to line up holes Pocket hole jig Mitre box Avoid decorative cuts like the ones under the "ridge cap" (which is just a piece of ready made molding) and the forty-fives on the base and base trim.

Did you paint or varnish it so the elements didn't ruin it fast. It's a really nice bird feeder. I'd hate to see it get ruined in 1 or 2 season from the rain, etc because it was left as natural wood.

Hi Laura, thanks for your comments. No I did not apply a finish. The birdies don’t like finish flavor added to their bird seed. The wood I used, “Red Grandis,” is supposedly weather resistant. It’s held up pretty well so far.

On the parts diagram the ends 3L& 3R the width is 9 15/16 but on the sheet with the end drawings it shows that width to be 10 3/32. Which is the correct dimension?
@IveBeenThinkingWorkshop
@IveBeenThinkingWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Larry, wow, great catch! The reason for the difference is the parts diagram was dimensioned to the cut off corner of the part while the end drawing was dimensioned to the imaginary corner that is not present. I recommend you start by cutting the material to the larger dimension and then cut off the corner to the finished dimension.

Ok the form factor is similar to most other bird feeders of that type. So what you really mean is that, using a bird feeder created less waste than throwing seed on the ground. It's great that you built one, which looks really nice, but the basic message is to use a bird feeder. Not that a particular design of a bird feeder that you did, was better than one you had before (in this case, didn't use one before). Thank you for the video!

Nice build, but far too many pieces glued together. Rain, snow, sleet & ice all Winter long will quickly cause parts to move about. The fewer glued up joints in bird houses & feeders, the better. Plus, the feed hopper is just too large. A squirrel family or bear or raccoon can get up there & easily scatter 5-10 lbs of seed. It’s a nice feeder, and good wood working, but not a good feeder.
