I tried to respect and honor my parents but they were abusive. I now respect and honor them from afar and have no relationship whatsoever and I’m immensely healthier and happier. The Bible never said To stay stuck or in bondage to anyone besides your spouse. Let the dead bury their dead. It’s a mercy that I stay away. That is how I respect. Because if I stay then their condemnation is present and continuous. At least if I leave then I can prevent them from accumulating more debt

I also don't have contact with my sexually abusive father. But I did try to honor him with a conversation about his sin and a call to repent before making that decision for myself and children's safety. I still honor him by praying God would save him and change him so I can have the dad in heaven that he was meant to be. I did the same thing with my extremely emotionally abusive mother and she cried and repented and is still in my life. Sometimes she causes problems for me again but I question her in ways that honor her and she usually has a pattern introspecting and taking it to the Lord. I have to be careful not to nitpick... She prays a lot for me now too! I feel it is a ministry.

@@katlynknowlden1969 I was similar. I tried several times to have an open conversation but that isn’t possible with abusive people. I used to clean his kitchen every time I went to visit even as an adult… I tried for years to bite my tongue and overlook things. I even offered hundreds of hours of medical advice and philosophical / theological concepts…. I tried. My mother is a narcissist. I wouldn’t have even be able to do that for her.

This was somewhat encouraging. The question has been on my heart of late. I have parents who are Catholic. I came to Christ in 2009. My father lies and talks behind everyone's back, including his wife and family. He teaches the bible to Catholics who have no idea what he's saying, but listen anyway. He hates truth and will respond in wrath. Despite a pandemic, he insists on coughing openly. But covers up for his favorite Catholic friends. It's a source of great frustration for me. He is a constant reminder that we are in the very last days. Despite the fatigue, we should all-- if we are truly in Christ-- love better than that.

Amen. It's hard to love others even though they're biologically your family members but with the love of Christ, we conquer all. Because He first loved us so now we love. We love God and also those around us-irrespective of their imperfections, resting on the hope that they may genuinely receive Christ one day.

This podcast is important to me because the criteria for people to be deemed "dishonorable" is so broad these days. One scroll of someone's social media posts and I'm tempted to write them off and see them as less valuable for their awful opinions. Proverbs 17:28 "Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent" and yet there are so many opportunities for people to express themselves and undo that. We must be different from the rest of the world and be radically gracious, outdoing one another in honor in the home, workplace, school or public space. Thank you APJ

Davids attitude towards Saul even when he tried to kill him. Daniels attitude towards the king even though he tossed him in the lions den. I’ve learned to commit my cause to God and not live near them but call them for the sake of their well being and willing to take care of their needs when necessary even though they are deceptive toxic narcissists.

Viewing this question through the lens of eternity, your family line brought you the gift of life. Yes, this valley of death is messy. It's maybe difficult to respect any toxic relationship especially from those that we perceive as being protectors and nurtures. Often the people we love the most hurt us with the deepest wounds and resulting scars. I know this to be true from person experience like many others. That said, when you view your parents through the lens of eternity, you will see hurt people hurt people. Often, those multigenerational hurt go back through family lines for centuries. Wars, economic depressions, famine, trauma, violence all take generations of family members working together to heal these deep spiritual wounds. Additionally, before you judge your parents, are you sure your child will not have scars of their own to heal from your own behavior? Do you want your child to give you the grace for your debts? Life is messy. Forgive quickly not for others but rather to heal from the wounds. Offer grace to others as you would want others to offer grace to you, including your own children. Healing these multigenerational wounds starts with grace, forgiveness and positive mental attitude towards the family you have that are willing to heal together. If they are not ready, love and respect them anyways for your own healing journey. Biblically, it talk about three generations of healing. Whether your the first generation or the third, healing begins with understanding, acknowledgment, acceptance, forgiveness and transcendence. All of which require respect and love of self, your origins, your journey, the lessons and growth gained during your souls path in the valley of life and death. With the advantage of hindsight, I wish I had learned this lesson before my parents died so I could acknowledge and respect the gift they gave me of adversity. The gifts and challenges they gave me provided me with the opportunity to show God my souls heart and character. Some might say that was the point and God's plan the entire time. With hindsight I was eternity grateful for the gift of my parents, this life and all the growth it's provided. So I choice to forgive my debtors as I wish others to forgive my debts. That grace is the least I can offer for all the centuries of struggle and hardships my genetic family endured to give me the opportunity to honor and respect them all before God with this post. Thank you for this beautiful gift called life. #Honour #Love #Respect #Gratitude ❤️🙏✝️👑

Family brought you the gift of life...what about those who were born to be given away to be enslaved and raped? I always regret my existence, i never asked to be born. Seeing how cruel the world is right now, this made me not to want having kids as I don't want them to suffer like I did. No judgement upon those who don't exist. If you live in a family where your parents are just purely evil to the point of almost killing you for money...am i not the same as them when i find it hard it in my heart to offer grace? I know the answer is yes but.....

This is so very good. Some practical advice on the honoring of abusive parents would be to find hope in Christ as a victim- the Bible says in the psalms that he will rescue YOU and honor YOU bc you know his name. Then I would see if it possible to speak the truth in love to them- a wise brother or sister in the Lord can help with this. Explain the problem and call them to repent! It is honoring to offer to others the opportunity to be perfected and with Jesus as he has extended toward us. Then you have to let the peices fall where they may- if there is no repentance it may be more honoring to cut relationship as that is the threat they face even more so with God and can help them question a little more their need for repentance. But you are free to choose persisting with the conversation too. If they repent you make be able to have a better relationship as you heal and Christ helps them work new patterns in their life. Oh, one more thing- whether you are prepared to speak the truth in love yet or not and whether they repent or not or you stay in contact or not pray for them!Thank you Pastor John! I am going to memorize these verses and teach them to my children!

The problem in America these days is that children have a parent, not parents.
@aquafishes
@aquafishes 2 жыл бұрын
And the problem in other countries is children have zero parents. Like when the father leaves at the birth of his child. And the mother leaves 6 months later. Then how do some of those children survive? By becoming servants to others in exchange for food and shelter. But my wife still supports her biological mother to this day. And that's because: Ephesians 4:32 - Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

This seems counter to the point of this podcast. Piper just pointed out seven instances in the bible commanding honor be given to people weather they deserve it or not, but you've chosen to say single-parent families are THE problem with America, dishonoring all the men and women raising children alone and ignoring all the other contributing factors to our country's decline. I hope you don't treat those men and women like a problem in your real life.

@aquafishes
@aquafishes 2 жыл бұрын
@@2ndPigeon Abortion choice will be debated until our Lord returns in my opinion, and unfortunately so will Doctors and Medicines and Vaccines which bring health to people and keeps their neighbors healthy also… Proverbs 17:22 and Matthew 9:12 In response to your comment however, I will say this, our teenage daughter who loves God and her neighbors the best she can with God's help and with the help of her parents - wouldn't have been born - if her mother wouldn't have been born. This is an example of God’s Providence and Blessings in our lives. To be honest it was very difficult for my wife growing up. After her sick grandmother died, her new hosts began training her when she was 5. And every Saturday starting at age 7, she had to walk 1 mile to the river, by herself, carrying a basket of her host’s clothes on her head. And after spending a day washing clothes with rocks and soap, and letting them dry in the hot sun, she took the long walk back home, on a mountain path, to the people who cared for her. Then the next day she would serve the children of the owners of the house. And before and after school every day she had assigned chores, including cooking. And studying was always last- but it was never neglected- unless the lamp ran out of oil. At age 17 after my wife graduated high school at the top of her class, she was awarded one half year of free college, so she moved to the city. But the college didn’t allow sandals, so she found a pair of shoes for free, that no one wanted, that didn’t fit, with red and white stripes for design. And although she looked like a clown on campus, God sent Angels (students with humble hearts) to help her, and to laugh with her, during those difficult times. And she found a place to live, in exchange for early morning and late night work services 7 days a week. And there were food, money, and other problems associated with lack of food and money that children with 2 or 1 good and fortunate parents may not experience. And I've had Crohn’s disease for over 60 years. In 1969 at age 10, with a temp of 106%, and no pain meds to comfort me, I had my second surgery on a hospital bed, when 3 nurses and 1 doctor pinned my legs and arms to the bed, and then the surgeon operated on me, in order to keep me alive. My first surgery was 7 days earlier in an operation room. And those 3 months in the hospital can only be described as a horror story. But at least I had 1 good parent, but not fortunate, a WW2 immigrant who spent most of her time working to support her children but managed to visit me before hospital closing time. If I had 0 parents, what would have happened to me? And after many surgeries over the last 50 years I now have only 20% of my intestines remaining as measured by Mayo Clinic during surgery. After recovering from surgery in 2008, the medical staff at Mayo Clinic was training me to live on a TPN-IV. But I said “No Thank You, I have an 8 month old child to take care of”, so I went home without the TPN-IV - after a health care infection forced the medical staff to remove my TPN PICC line… 2 Corinthians 5:7 Let me conclude by saying that both my wife and I count ourselves blessed for the lives we had by the Grace of God in our lives. And my family of 3 knows we had so much more than the majority of citizens who live in this same temporary world. But beyond All human measurements we have Peace from God our Father through Jesus our Lord by God's Holy Spirit who comforts us daily with God’s Holy Word, which is available to All of us who believe… Proverbs 18:24 and John 14:27 Let me also say that the journey we’re all on now is temporary, but our destination is permanent. So share the gospel as much as you can so no one gets lost. And help children along the way as much as you can - especially those who don’t have 2 parents. And may God use us to be another person’s Angel, figuratively speaking, James 1:17. Thanks for your comment; And God Bless You... 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

I have been reborn and want to be a God fearing man. I live in a broken household. My mother continually persecutes me even though she has tasted the grace and mercy and forgiveness of God long ago. I have great desire to make no compromises with my prayer life and that requires me to make a 10 minute drive to church, but my mother does not seem to like that. She regularly condemns me saying I have not helped with certain chores, but these are chores frequently handled by my sibling. I therefore have not been commanded and do not break the Lord's command, obey your parents However, I may have stepped the line. As my mother has nagged about me not doing anything, I have told her that I am not disobeying her because she has not commanded me, and urged she command me so that I may be able to obey. I was frustrated at her groundless accusations and condemnations, but once she commanded me, I gave a sincere non-offensive joyous thank you. I truly do not want to dishonor my parents in any way, so I fear I may have stepped out of line. I am simply sick and tired of the persecution and condemnation that has no grounds. I do not know if I should have waited for God's timing for His convictions to come or if I was right in doing what I did. I know it's not my position to be telling my mother how to command me, but again, I want a mother who commands me and treats me justly. I do not know if I've done wrong

I was reading Timothy. About family providing for their own children. And I was praying that my mildly neglectful parents come back to God. Is there a difference between some abuses than others? It is explicit about hell and heaven - your own mother and father and their family, are your own family. Is your neighbour family? Is your old school friend? It's a difficult trial for Orphans. If my family has had a breakdown, is my family the family the ones that can by God repair that damage? I do believe that - they weren't rapists, they were neglectful. God can put it right. Or maybe just prayer at church is enough? But they are still in my life Thank God! I owe that to myself, and God - my own family. I can get police and my doctor or priest to help me. I have food, shelter, medicine, clothes, soap, water - my mum and dad know that. They didn't stop me having that. But I was in a homeless shelter and we are wealthy. I'm not a criminal, it's something Jesus will help me with on my faith journey. Up and down, and three steps forward, two steps back, one step again.

I'm in a weird situation my father since I was 6-7 years-old talked about how he would kick me out at 18 or curse me for being hard of hearing and not following his directions properly and when I forget to do something or don't do it completely he would sometimes say he would willingly go to jail for ending my life. I know try to talk to him trying to negotiate my actions to him but he calls it stupid logic that when I get to the real world would cause mr to get into bot water with people (said logic makes me in my schooling help associates with answers and questions yes they sometimes think I'm stiff) how do I respect a man who treats me and my siblings like trash constantly and screens at us at the top of his lungs believes me for getting excited at watching a TV show while my stressed mother is sleeping and does the same thing when talking to his siblings on the phone. I want to honor God but I just can't bring myself to respect a man. Like that constantly

I am so sorry to hear I totally understand you. For me it was with my mother when I was younger I was always targeted for everything I did and she would scream and hit me for anything. For example I would ask what time it was as a little girl and she'd just start mocking me and calling me stupid and tell me to use common sense and looking back that's such a normal thing to ask as a kid or even as an older person. Then when my hand writing wasn't neat enough or when I didn't understand something she was saying she would scream, hit, and mock me and I was only a kid. Literally yesterday I was having a panic attack because of her and she starts imitating me in order to prove that she is better and since I'm a sensitive person I always cry because of her and she always accuses me of crying for pity and that I use these tactics as a form of manipulation. A few years ago I lost respect for my mother for being so cruel and my father for being absent emotionally and never helping me. NOW something that has helped me is looking at the cup being half full rather than half empty. As a kid I never stood up for myself and would be so respectful and get disrespected back so one day I just had enough and thought if I am going to get disrespected either ways I'm gonna be disrespectful back and that's the day I lost absolute respect for my parents. I am a naturally really grateful person so being rude to them because of all the hate I built up towards them makes me feel like a brat even tho I believe they deserve to not be respected. for now just think about the good things they do for you even though it sounds like the bare minimum some parents fail to provide for their children economically. some kids can't go to school, some kids don't eat, some kids were completely abandoned by their parents. I was emotionally abandoned by mine but at least I have access to a roof and a bed. Then by the time you're old enough to move out, get out, forgive them, and cut them off. that is my plan and I'm sure it could be useful for you too.

Sorry, this is another post on the same day but am just curious about your opinion out there on this. What to ye does it mean when God says to honor your father and mother and does not also mean to respect your father and mother and if so, what does that imply? Jesus also said that whoever does Gods will is my father, mother, brother and sister. Now, what must a Christian do when dealing with and or living with non Christian parents and family and also false Christian counterfeit Christian family such as uncle and aunt for instance??? When I was late with the rent for Mum, she said that the Bible says to honor your mother and that you should obey your mother and put your biological family before yourself and anyone and anything else, she also said today that it is my turn to buy for the house but I don't buy anything, which is actually not true,as I have bought mostly dinner, milk, butter and bread for the both of us for a long while, yet on many times Mum says to me and she tells others also, that I don't buy anything for the house or the basic necessities so she has to get them because there is nothing there. I confess, this provoked me to writing posts of gossip online to my Facebook wall in the hopes of informing others of her behavior so I could have a positive outcome. But I see now through the word that Jesus God says to not treat evil with evil and to not speak with evil, to be careful of what comes out of the mouth because it is wicked, to not hold grudges or hatred in the heart and to speak less and not argue over things which don't matter because this life is only temporary. So I tame and restrain myself know, even though it is hard because my family speak evil of me but I am trying my best not to curse them or violate the commandments or grieve the Holy Spirit so I will Mum and my family in general have their last word and I will just work on being holy and humble as best I can.

I do think you can honor without respect them, as the culture over in the east is a honor system. It just means do not do anything that would bring shame. I think you can admit your abusive father is abusive while still honoring them, likewise saying your mother being domestically violent it's not being disrespectful to say that as long as the motive isn't to attack their character but seek out help.

I don’t interpret 1st Peter 2:17 to mean respect all men. When you go into Strongs concordance the word honor means value. I take it to mean value all human life. Something that one group of people has not done throughout history but that’s for another video. 19 times throughout the Bible it means honor and two times it means value. I think this time in particular (timaō) means value. That’s my take on it.

@@ead630 They are clearly different or else the Strongs concordance wouldn’t have stated so. Like I said you can look at the strong’s concordance yourself and determine what you think it means. The word honor is said twice in that passage. One for Kings and one for men. I think there was a difference in the two words used. I think it was meant for honor for kings and value for men.

It is only still in the constitution (I think) because it is a part of the main body of the Constitution, and is not an amendment, so the words themselves cannot be repealed. But I assure you that it has no legal enforcement or standing today, because any future laws (like the Civil Rights Act) that contradict cancel it out. So the words are still there, but it is long out of practice.

Narcissistic parents are ridiculously damaging to children. I wonder how the Bible responds to injured children/adults who have been invalidated and dismissed. Parents have a responsibility to be honorable. Kids don’t ask to be here. I agree in large part with this, but find it hard to accept.

Then you should pray that God would do a work in your heart. Yes, some of God's commands will be hard for us, that is why as believers we are to rely on the strength of the Spirit. It is also helpful when remembering the grace God has shown us when we were dead in our sins and trespasses.

Here is something that has helped me: When you think your parent(s) have treated you or a situation unjustly, remember a few things: • Your parents likely have not been as blessed as you to grow up in the modern constructs of is deemed fair and unfair. • What have you, as the son or daughter, done to take responsibility of the situation? • How much have your parents sacrificed to provide you with a fair and better life? • If your approach is not working, why blame them? Blame yourself first in acknowledging that your approach is likely not good enough, not clever enough, not loving enough, not patient enough. • Why not aim to be the best son or daughter that has ever lived? • There are reasons as to why your parents turned out the way they did. • Instead of unjustly judging them, become the person that can set the example of love. And when you do this, don't just think you're doing them a service. They deserve your honor, respect, and love. You're the one that has fallen short this entire time. Remember this verse: “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?" - Matthew 7:3

John, do you think I am guilty of idolatry because in 2020 I was an enthusiastic Trump supporter? I can see how for the jaded observer my enthusiasm may be construed to be worship. But it most certainly is not. It was simple excitement over the thought that someone cared enough for the unborn to take a stand. A very, very welcome stand. Do you know that God puts the summation of his creative power in every conception? We are made in the very image of our creator. This is why Satan takes extraordinary delight in every abortion. To purposely kill a child in its most nascent, most innocent, most vulnerable form is a victory of incalculable proportions to the powers of Hell. The first thing Biden did upon getting into office was to fund the abortions of the nations. Just as he said he would do.
