Does your Christian church upbringing have an influence on where your religious obsessive-compulsive thoughts go? How much does your denominational affiliation influence scrupulosity in your life?
I want to use my pastoral experience and passion for mental health to speak into various denominations I have experienced and how they contribute to where OCD struggles often go. What do your thoughts obsess around when it comes to your faith? It may have some relation to the type of church you were a part of.
In this broadcast, I speak about the following denominations and where OCD strugglers often have battles:
- Pentecostalism
- Charismatic
- Baptist
- Reformed
- Lutherans
- Catholics
I also bring out the influence of legalism and cults.

I was raised in an NAR background. I constantly cried out to God, strived after "having enough faith" to be healed, and rebuked the thoughts compulsively because I believed God would always heal. I even went to a huge faith healing conference in hopes that I would "manifest" the gifts of the spirit, and my mental illness would leave me. The whole thing eventually lead me to doubt God, and become a progressive Christian for a very long time. Until God pulled me out. I now attend a reformed Baptist church. I am often suprised by how much of the Bible was never explained to me. The idea of God's sovereignty has actually brought me peace, he is in control in the bad and the good and has a purpose for all of it. If I'm healed that's according to his will and if not, that is also his will. He is using it for his glory even when I can't see it or understand it. That gives me the strength to pull through my darkest times.

I spent my whole life wondering why church didn't help my family (who attended Baptist church regularly). It didn't help my mom who struggled with alcoholism. It didn't help my dad who had intense OCD struggles (and seminary made his struggles worse). It didn't help my brother who battled drug addiction stemming from his spina bifida. I watched them all die relatively young due to their struggles/addictions. Now, I'm 47 and I realize how there was no mentoring available...and no help available (at least I didn't see any). There was only "work" for them to do in the "church machine" and one more "potluck dinner" to prep for where many ate (and overate) unhealthy foods. I so appreciate all you're sharing, Mark. God is using it to heal deep wounds. I don't judge the churches I grew up in. I truly believe they didn't know any better.

I remember a few years ago I was struggling with obsessive thoughts (didn’t know it was OCD/anxiety) that led me to think that if I didn’t “surrender to God” He could not do the amazing things He wanted to do in my life. (But on the flip side, once I did surrender, I believed I was giving Him permission to do something painful and horrible to me) I was at a missions conference at my Christian college and felt the “thump thump” in my heart to go up and receive prayer. I was fully expecting the person praying for me to say, “Yeah, you gotta surrender, don’t ya know!!!” but what actually happened was that the music was so loud she could hardly hear a word of what I was saying my struggle was. To this day I’m not sure if she even knew. I just know it was the Holy Spirit that gave her a word, and that was “grace.” That hit me. I went that night and read Psalm 103 and it was one of the first times the compassion of the Father began to seep into my heart. One of my favorite verses: “He knows our frame and remembers that we are but dust.” Oh how great is His compassion for us who struggle in this way! When others don’t understand the struggle, He does!

After so long and being in so many churches, I've finally developed a spine of healthy biblical theology of God's love. Not of anything else - just God's love in the Bible over and over again. So now it doesn't matter who approaches me - I am strong enough to discern the health of what they are saying and can dismiss it without taking it into myself. I know the difference of kind biblical rebuke and just fearful misinterpretation. It's amazing to be free and confident in my relationship with Jesus.

My takeaway from this is that I've been angry, even raging, at God, Christianity, and pastors. To put into a little context, I've been told by some pastor's that I'm evil because I do not go to their church, so that'll give you some semblance of why pastors as well. I no longer have to live in rage & terror anymore. Mark's speaking my language, what I have intuitively known for some time now, and he's able to open up some of these wounds I have and begin the healing process. And I'm now beginning to recognize that it's not all my fault for being human, and worse, being a female. With female, I mean that I was taught that Eve was lower than a serpent because she ate the apple and essentially forced Adam to do the same. Thank you, Mark, for opening my wounds. And thank you to his wonderful followers for being on their own healing journey with me.

Very true in my experience. I grew up attending (for the most part) Reformed Baptist Churches and had a lot of OCD anxiety surrounding the validity of my salvation but wasn't sure at the time what the cause of it was; I was only diagnosed with OCD about a few years ago during a horrific episode of pure O after having previously been misdiagnosed. The church I grew up in had a tendency toward legalism and I think influenced my anxiety in a negative way.

This is so incredibly helpful to me! Phew, the “word of faith” part 😮‍💨 I saw the lack of facing reality in my own life and ignoring deeper issues from this and can totally see how it feeds being in denial. When it comes to things like healing, I’m pondering how you find balance in “speaking life” but facing reality and a healthy way to face situations like that.

I agree I think often times people leave places and say it was all bad but we do learn even in spaces that may not ultimately be for us. I’m grateful for the good but I’m glad I no longer have shame around the things I know caused great harm. At the same time I understand why many leave the church and never return. Those seasons can be incredibly traumatic and I’ve noticed the church at large tries to downplay it by saying just heal! Not realizing everyone doesn’t bounce back from things the same way. There’s also a huge downplaying of emotional, verbal, and spiritual abuse. I appreciate your tact with how you touched on all these subjects.

I tend to obsess over picking "the right denomination". I was baptized in the Lutheran church but raised in Southern Baptist and Non-denominational churches. My mom never really picked a place to build community, and now I tend to obsess over this after falling into a cult environment of the new age flavor. Having returned to Christ and accepted Christ as my savior, with help from my therapist, i am reaching out to the pastor at the church I'm currently attending, as well as reading/listening to you book and other content. This video was helpful in helping me see where in my life I may have come across some of the things that cause me to spiral. thank you.

There was a short while after I was saved and baptized that I believed that I was right with God and I’ve struggled with it went back to the alter a second time didn’t feel anything. I started attending another Baptist Church that was better and then stopped. I started attending An Episcopal church that I really enjoyed until some major social issues arose so I parted ways. I now attend a Catholic Church about 5 or so years now. I’m not a member for whatever reason but I enjoy attending. It doesn’t set off my OCD that I’ve known that I’ve had since childhood and in 2022 I found out that I have ADHD, just the attention part. God bless you Mark!

Thank you so much Mark for this incredible message! I had a breakthrough last night where I told God I’m tired of looking to certain leaders or people in the body of Christ as the standard for how well I’m doing in my walk. Although I find some of their teachings helpful I also often find myself feeling like I never will measure up to what they preach. I left a cult a couple years ago and then I started going to therapy where I then began to deconstruct from legalism. I appreciate so much how you are not black and white with your approach! Reading the comments here I feel like I’ve found my community. It’s so hard being mental health informed and spiritual b/c the majority of the body of Christ seems to not always have emotional intelligence. I get it cause I was once there too and I don’t want to point fingers instead I want to be the change others can also see.

We speak so much on the love of the father, what about the mother? I do wonder how scrupulosity emerges for women, especially women of color or for disadvantaged groups. I wonder if it’s easier for men, to identify with the love of the father, because there is a relatedness men share simply based on gender. I enjoyed the perspective, as I agree with the basic tenet of the video. Personally, my OCD emerged when I became involved in a charismatic church.

You nailed my Reformed experience. Some of the most intelligent and articulate Christians I have ever met. Also, some of the apologetics put pastoral care on hold and just mowed over people right and left leaving bodies behind. I Can totally relate! I was raised Catholic. Saved in a Pentecostal (Apostolic, Oneness, Jesus name, Holiness) church - yea it’s a mouthful! 😅 I left that after 13 long years. Shortly after leaving, I believe God led me to a group of charismatic folks who practice deliverance. I helped a little, but the overall experience I’ve had with them is what I truly needed - a sense of family community, vulnerability, grace, the love of the Father, and a break from the institutional church machine. I appreciate the lessons and positive experiences I’ve had in the previous church denominations, but I’m glad God has brought me where I am now and I wouldn’t trade it for nothing! Thank you again Mark for the work you do. It’s so refreshing, simplistic, yet deep.

Yes I can relate. I grew up in a strict (very strict) Baptist church. And it was very Pastor and works focus, it took awhile to be free mentally and spiritually from that. What's interesting is it was stricter than any Pentecostal church I have experienced which I later transitioned into. I'm now in more of "Non Denominational" church. The truth is my concern is a relationship with Jesus. In my opinion, every denomination has errors, can be religious and legalistic. For me, I have such a peace in Jesus many of the church antics don't bother me.

Mark, I’ve been really enjoying your content these last few years. I’m seeing more and more and more “OCD” related content on KZfaq, along with anxiety and depression - some from a Christian perspective but many who are not. I have two questions: first, how would one go about getting “diagnosed” with OCD? When I describe my own issues, I usually refer to it as “obsessional or anxious thinking” which is sometimes coupled with “magical or compulsive thought habits”. Granted, this not a medical diagnosis but is a self-assessment based on looking back over my whole life. I’m continually trying to break through these thought patterns, but when they grab hold, it can still be very intense, and over the years I’ve usually associated it with God/conviction, etc. I’m convinced in some areas it might have been, but perhaps not in others. Thank you for all you have done to inject a Christian worldview into this arena, it is much needed. I got your recent book but I’m working through some other ones first but I plan to get to it soon.

This is so good. I listened today while driving. I may have to go back and listen. I can relate 💯, but I'm not sure I actually caught what I do about it now. Also do you have a testimony video!? I just found your channel and scoped out the whole channel, 6yrs ago and didn't see one. I was raised Pentecostal, Apostolic for about 2-3 years then United Pentecostal Church for 10 and now AOG now for 2.5 probably. It has been an adjustment. My eyes have been open to legalism and being a Pharisee and I came across your videos! I'm loving the videos so far and excited to see your resources on your website as well.

For Mark or anyone in the comments. Has anyone ever heard or seen how certain churches talk about mental illness when mentioned? If anyone’s comfortable with it I would be interested to hearing what some of your experiences are. I have Severe treatment resistant Depression and I was told that is a besetting sin. Which I don’t see anywhere in scripture about being sinful. I heard Charles Spurgeon battled depression where it hindered him

I have a Pentecostal background. Depression was often seen as spiritual warfare/demon or a test before the testimony. I never heard it discussed as mental illness due to chemical imbalance, hormones, long-term stress, or disappointment. The latter two are sometimes brought on by hope deferred because they waited on words that haven't--or never will--come to pass because God never said it.

So many issues I have you listed and I’ve been unable to experience freedom. In careers, hobbies or even learning worship guitar for my church. I always start feeling I should do it then talk myself out or think maybe God just doesn’t want me to do it. I’ve kept myself from fun activities and I’m never present with my family I have constant depression and lost joy

Too many people have a relationship with the church and not a relationship with God. And fail to understand his character. When you understand God’s true character, his love is what changes you and you can began to walk in a life of peace, love and certainty and able to serve God willingly and truthfully. ”Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.“ ‭‭Romans‬ ‭5‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭

The auctioneer pastor he mentioned is Peter Ruckman lol. He was very passionate about giving people assurance of their salvation and was speaking about how the Thief on the cross only had to believe. One good thing about Baptists are they are firm on OSAS, but they can find fault in making you question if you were saved to begin with ( “did you really believe?”) type questioning.

I once went through a dark period when I had convinced myself that I committed the unpardonable sin against the Holy Spirit.I was depressed and anxious for several months. It took a lot of convincing from my christian friends to persuade me that I committed no such sin and indeed that it is IMPOSSIBLE FOR A CHRISTIAN TO COMMIT SUCH A SIN AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT.

Thank you for this video. I am a Christian dealing I’m with OCD since 2019. Unfortunately I had to skip until the end because I couldn’t bare facing the examples… they became obsessions (like the Pentecostal and the “joke” of cursing before dying or rapture). I know it clearly wasn’t your intention so I am not blaming you but I want to at least express it so you know a bit more about us “sufferers” ;) God bless !

You mentioned how Christians love hard-hitting sermons. I remember seeing a man jokingly comment that listening to Paul Washer always makes his ears burn, but he expressed gratitude for getting an ear-boxing with the truth each time. Are we training Christians to become ... dare I say ... spiritual masochists?

@@lukastheprussian4465 I’m so sorry you’ve had such a painful and possibly traumatic experience with Washer. It’s really sad and sickening that a preacher would spark OCD in someone. I’ve not had a good experience with him either. Before discovering I was dealing with religious OCD, I knew I struggled with connecting to my identity in Christ, so I intentionally listened to him a lot last year, trying to grasp God’s love for me. The irony. I’m sure he worsened it. I hoped for comfort from each sermon, but each time, I was left with some measure of discouragement and what I thought was “conviction” over my lack of spirituality. For sure, my view of Father God grew in distortion. His holiness terrified me (and I felt bad because I knew I was supposed to be in grateful awe of it). He seemed raging and even more distant than before. Not until providentially stumbling across Mark some months ago did I switch my prayers from exclusively addressing Jesus (He felt like a shield from the Father), to addressing my Abba. ❤️ It felt so awkward and uncomfortable at first, but now it’s much more natural and even enjoyable. Keep pressing on in your journey, my friend. 😊

@@katiesanders96 I'm so sorry that you have to go through this. But it makes me very happy that your relationship with God improved! You are loved and very lovable 😊 I am like that too, that I only pray to Jesus because I'm afraid of the Father! With the Father I always connect a boiling anger that cannot wait to wipe me out. And when I think of the Holy Spirit I immediately become afraid that I could blaspheme Him. I hope for the breakthrough to come

I wish we lived in a time when we were right when the church truly started. The OG church. Sin has corrupted the church to such an extent especially this day in age. I went to a Baptist church as a kid and got saved when I was like 9 or 10. I accepted Jesus as Savior and asked Him to take away my sins. I told my dad that night when I got home and was immediately ridiculed. That really affected me. Also having the wrong leading and thinking that basically I had a license to sin. I stopped church not too long after this. Then I got into the Pentecostal church around 18/19. At this point I knew I needed to be baptized like we're commanded. I wanted to have assurance of my salvation and for my sins to be washed. Baptism was like having a weight lifted. I felt different. Like the weight of sin lifted. I always had a problem with the teaching in Pentecostal churches though that the only way you know you have the Holy Spirit is by speaking in tongues. That never sat right with me. I only spoke in tongues once not long after being baptized. And I didn't know why I didn't for so long. Like has He left me? I would ask and it wouldn't happen. I never spoke in tongues again until last April. We're talking what 16ish years? But He granted my request and let me again. I thank God that He did. I think the way they teach on tongues in and of itself causes so many people anxiety.

Paul states in the Bible it's a gift. Not everyone receives that gift. He also says you shouldn't speak in tongues in church unless you have an interpreter.

The glaring issue with all of this is that why doesn’t God seem willing to speak to his children clearly when they are getting things wrong? All of these observations come with hindsight, through trial and error. Across Christendom it seems like God is quite happy to let people get things seriously wrong, come to harm but not at all clearly direct them. Videos like these are peoples work to diagnose and fix the issues faith creates.

A lot of the charismatic movement used youtube videos to manipulate emotions and make us look to a man's opinion for our salvation vs the words of Jesus which speak liberty and no condemnation. I grew up baptist then was "oh christianity has a spiritual side this must be truth". I've been healed by the blood before when I asked jesus to touch my back. I don't speak in tongues but it made me feel like a bastard bc I didn't speak in tongues.
