What a messed up company, now I guess it did screw over Shin Ei, but only for a brief time. Do keep in mind that the actual first Doraemon anime, based on the eponymous manga, was released in 1973 and wasn’t that popular with children, which meant that the 1979 version was a longer running continuity reboot of it.

Learning about Cinar really upset me, given they made A LOT of my childhood shows [notably Arthur and Zoboomafoo]. I feel bad for all the people they scammed. And now the Cookie Jar name is tainted for me. I wonder if they scammed PBS? That would play a role in PBS Kids' downfall if true. On a different note, I really hope you'll cover Will Vinton Studios, a rising company that had a really unfair ending. They made The California Raisins, Domino's Pizza's The Noid, original characters like Rex, Herb, and the infamous Wilshire Pig, and adaptions of stories such as The Little Prince and the Adventures Of Mark Twain movie. Will and his team [including Craig Bartlett, who later left to create Hey Arnold] were on the road to sucess, but several mishaps [including the aforementioned Wilshire] caused the studio to struggle during the 90s. However, they also created the M&Ms spokescandies and provided the animation for The PJs by Eddie Murphy during this time. Phil Knight [founder of NIKE] bought stock in the company, had his son Travis Knight work there, and then eventually bought Will's entire studio out, FIRED WILL FROM HIS OWN COMPANY, and Travis took over. The result is Laika Studios. I used to like Laika, but after finding out what happened to Will Vinton, my opinion on the studio, and the Knights [albeit I already disliked Phil knowing some shady stuff NIKE did] soured. Will deserved better. The documentary Claydream goes into detail, and I highly recommend checking it out. Sadly, not many people talk about Will Vinton.
