Democracy in America is balanced on a knife edge, says political scientist Barbara F. Walter, but it may not be too late to rescue it. Walter is the author of "How Civil Wars Start" and she speaks with Hari Sreenivasan about how America can prevent another one from starting.

Its terrifying to see the fall of democracy in a country where democracy always 'appeared' to be one of its reasons for existing. I love the States, I have many friends there, I've travelled extensively around the country, but that was before Trump got in, and while the divisions before that were somewhat apparent to the outsider, they didn't appear to be so angry, fractured, or dangerous. I would hesitate to travel anywhere out of the places I know well in the US now, I fear they are populated with severe danger. 🇬🇧

I agree with your concern. The tolerance of violence from both political sides is wrong. Although most has come from the Left, both sides are responsible. The best approach is a strong zero tolerance of violence or any tolerance, rationalization or blame shifting to support political violence.

A portion of our problem is the two-party system. In a multi-party parliamentary system it would be easier to isolate the anti-democratic lunatics. However, in our system of only two major parties, the dangers are enormous. When one of the two parties becomes blatantly anti-democratic/anti-reality/anti-truthfulness - we are facing an existential threat.

I read her book when it was first published nearly a year ago. It's hard to believe how much has happened and how much more divided the country has become since then. We are definitely heading in the wrong direction. It's like watching a disaster unfold. It feels like slow motion but at the same time a lot is happening on a near daily basis. The best self-protection for any group feeling that they are in danger of becoming a disaffected minority should be to vigorously guarantee that all citizens are treated equally regardless of minority status. Gerrymandering and voter suppression aimed at establishing minority rule are inherently unjust and risk a backlash.

It is absolutely true that online voting can be made secure. However, in the current climate, there is no way that change can be made in the near future. It will happen eventually. I imagine FRS to confirm who logged on and a one-use password for the vote may be the way to go, but right now the deniers are convinced in-person paper ballots are the only secure vote. Of course, this is not secure and is often used by autocracies in less affluent countries to maintain power.

Excellent viewpoint. I would suggest that one of the reasons why "democracy doesn't work" for right-wing white men any longer, is that they NEVER sought democracy in the first place. As you point out quite eloquently, they were used to a rigged game, a pocket ace. They were accustomed to the system regarding them as the purveyors of the first best choices in America, followed by a doling out of lesser opportunities for all of the people they never characterized as worthwhile from the beginning. Now that people of all colors and ethnicities are standing in defiance of this inequitable paradigm, their true confederate colors are shining through. The fact is, they never WANTED to compete. They wanted everything handed to them by a racially corrupt system, and now that they have to compete, equality feels like discrimination to THEM.

Mass school shootings, attacks on religious centers, donot constitute a basis for civil war. Civil wars tend to be politically motivated such as the war in northern ireland, Greece, el Salvador, cuba, Rwanda the Sudan and even in Libya and Lebanon. Even in precommunist china and Russia it was politics. So using that metric, all of the attacks in the United States since 2008 have been by the far left, from pulling down statues, to an assault a Federal building in Portland lasting 100 days, to the secession of 20 city blocks in WaShongton state. Even the BLM riots on the wake of George floyd. Politics has been at the heart of every civil war. When you co sider the words of senator Maxine water, Rep. Cori Bush, and the actions of Hillary Clinton, and the Democratic leadership against this backdrop. It's not white men who are on the far right rather its political ideologies. Antifa and black block are largely white and male, and they have substantial popular support. So this alone blows her narrative clear out of the water. I dont know what civil wars she examined but apparently she ignored a vast swath of them.

The American Civil War started because southern conservatives saw two things happening: 1. California became a free state S of the 36º 30' line. This made the free to slave state ratio 16 : 15 meaning that the slaver's hold on the Senate was no longer assured. 2. They saw the North's superior population as a threat to slaver's control over the House. These meant that the GAG RULE was no longer going to be viable to prevent legislation from prohibiting slavery. When the gradual and compensated emancipationist President was elected in 1860, they didn't even see what he was going to do before they vacated the Senate and opted to settle it on the battlefield. Demographics are driving Republicans to jettison Democracy altogether. When they say the South Will Rise again, this is what it looks like folks.

I know its nice to bring Orban up as an example, but it has little effect on the whole world what he does, its a small country. If that system would go to the US, it would be devastating to the whole world. I left Hungary because of Orban, and so do many of my friends, but I can't imagine what it would do the US to have that kind of erosion of democracy, its mind boggling, and makes you feel incredibly powerless against the leading elite. In Hungary, and also ins Serbia, where I originally come from, you can only get ahead and live a successful life, if you bow to the leading power in some form, either being a party member or just not criticizing them in any way. I heard people losing their jobs just because they were tagged on facebook with the wrong people in a picture, or liking the wrong article. I know that Eastern European countries seem nice from the outside, but its getting harder and harder to live in them because of populism and the hybrid "democracies" they create. And even though there is no civil war in them, the politics they have does threaten your existence, while you live there. I wish people had a better understanding of how hard it is to see your country go rot themselves from the inside and erode the hard built democracies within just a few years.
