Using the classic Rule of Thirds in a stereo setup is often a great starting point but not always the best place to wind up when a high-performance stereo system is concerned.

I love this stuff and always appreciate Paul's expertise and guidance. It is often frustrating however, seeing billion dollar equipment in invariably untreated rooms. I would humbly suggest that for a dramatic increase in perceivable sound quality, adding room treatment: bass traps, ceiling clouds, acoustic panels and diffusers. Kill those first and second reflections and minimize the room's effects on the soundstage.

Shouldn't simply rely on listener location, as speaker location is an integral role as well. Room modes are a function of room dimensions. - Which modes are excited is determined by speaker location. - Which modes are heard is determined by listener location. So optimization is an iterative process, ... whereby the results of small positional changes are listened to/measured, over and over ... narrowing in on the best case. Granted, it's a lot of work. I'm guessing rarely do even the most committed enthusiasts put in the effort.

There is that trick for subwoofer placement if you happen to own a subwoofer which you are able to move, you can place it at your listening position and then move through the room and listen where it sounds best. Then you just switch the position of the subwoofer and yourself and it usually sounds more than good enough to begin with finer adjustments 😊

Ye this is best advise, especially in small rooms. Mids, and highs are so easy to deal with acoustic panels if needed but bass is nightmare to deal with. If bass is bad in your sweet spot it's not real sweet spot.

How close can you sit to the speakers depends on how many drivers it has. With more than two you can get time alignment issues because you don't have enough distance for them to blend together before you hear. If you want to sit very close say 1m choose a speaker with concentric drivers with a single point source such as from Kef or Tannoy.

Nice sensible video. It makes sense to try different locations for the speakers away from the wall, toe in, distance from the speakers - why not, it is free. I moved my chair out of the way, and literally got on my knees, so my ears would be at the same level as sitting in the chair, cranked up a song I know well and put the chair where it sounded best. There is a small "bubble" where the imaging and bass all come together, X marks the spot for the chair. Given all the issues every listening room is going to have unless a good amount of thought (and money) is put into treating it, the best location is going to be a pretty small area, and relatively close to the speaker seems to somewhat reduce the effects of problems in the room. Ideally the room should be treated to try to address standing waves, reflections, etc. My wife has Christmas going in the back of the listening area in my finished basement, I think all her voluminous crap along the back wall actually made the sound better - it is probably acting in some capacity as a bass trap. Maybe I should start storing more crap down there - LMAO... I will probably start down the rabbit hole that is room treatment, at least in a small way.

In my room my speakers are about 30+ cm from the wall and my couch is almost against the back wall. If I move forward I loose alot of bass in the center of the room. The best place is when I lean back in my sweetspot. But my room sucks so it's all a comprimize to make it sound as good as possible and at the same time using it as a loving room. And it's not a really big room either. But I got the bass right in the sweetspot and the stereo perspective is not that bad considering the room.

I'm in the same situation. I could do the rule of thirds in my living room but it would be too loud for the neighbors in my apt building so my system is set up in a bedroom with no shared walls where I won't disturb anyone. I'm about 8.5 feet from each speaker and speakers same distance apart and toed in 2 inches and it sounds very good. A lot if not most people don't have the space for the rule of thirds.

Sadly the book is still not out - at least not on Amazon Germany. Something to consider though - one of the best ways to eliminate reflections from the front wall is if the wall IS the baffle. Then there's no back wave and nothing to reflect off, anyway. Which is why in some studios the monitor speakers are flush mounted into the wall.

Hey Paul,. Dynaudio in their room setup videos recommends using a 1/5th boundary initial starting guideline as opposed to the 1/3rd guideline recommended by most reviewers and setup experts. Care to comment? Love your videos.
@RasheedKhan-he6xx
@RasheedKhan-he6xx 3 жыл бұрын
Dynaudio talks about 5/8 or 8/5 to front and side walls. That in other words is 1:1.6 or what is classically known as the Golden Ratio. Its a myth. So to is the rule of thirds as Paul indirectly hints right here. So pick either as a starting point, it absolutely doesn't matter. Invest in a handheld (decent quality) SPL meter, get a BBC test tones LP or CD and do the bass crawl. Treat your room (that should actually be TUNE your room with acoustic treatments - i.e. shift the resonant frequency to somewhere less offensive. You won't entirely succeed, don't worry about it, something is better than nothing). Do the bass crawl. If you have box speakers consider adding external bracing to stiffen them up further (can look ugly). This is to improve the quality, not the quantity of bass. Understand that the peaks and troughs of the standing waves do not move with speaker placement, they are a function of the room dimensions. There will be several places in the room where the base sounds right, pick whichever is most aesthetic / convenient and make that your seating position. Now start to position the speakers for imaging and for clarity. Actually most us understand this intuitively. What I have written here can be understood by anyone with an O'level (10th grade) in physics for example. But few of us have dedicated listening rooms and even if we do we still don't have the stomach for how visually ugly it can get if we go all the way to make it sound good through acoustic treatment. In fact I'll correct my previous statement about only few of us having dedicated listening rooms. I'm going to say almost none of us has a DEDICATED listening room because that would have to have been built by the architect. Like the Sydney Opera House where the acoustic design was actually ahead of what civil engineering could achieve at the time of commissioning in 1957 or so. I read somewhere that the full potential of what Jorn Utzon had designed was only realised sometime in the 1990s. I could be misremembering, but if I'm not that's kind of amazing to think about! So anyway the rest of us, we live with a compromise. Which, IMHO is fine. When I really want good music I go to hear it live. Assuming that ever becomes possible again.

If you don’t solve the room modes... you’ll never get correct sound in a normal sized room. In my 12x17 room I have nearly perfectly sorted base anywhere in the room a person can be because I solved the room modes issue, at which point the entire tonal range vastly improved in startling ways. The effects of un resolved room modes impact way way more than just having even bass, therefore finding the best spot to plop your chair in an unsolved room is far far far away from an actual solution. Unfortunately it is rather difficult to actually banish room modes.

bass interaction with the room is also dependent on which type of bass you employ : open baffle dipole bass interacts way less with the room (net zero pressure but also no room gain) and causes much less problems than your typical monopole (closed or vented) bass
@FOH3663
@FOH3663 3 жыл бұрын
Indeed, you're right. There's so much acoustic complexity to reproduction of low distortion bass in typical residential sized listening rooms. No room gain (pressure vessel gain) as you said, or support below the first resonance. The deck is stacked against us regarding playback in the lowest octaves. Myself, I have an IB sub, so I enjoy the wonderful benefits that accompany room gain (PVG). Psycho-acoustics and the equal loudness curves reveals that low distortion reproduction of a 20hz tone is a difficult task. Relative to 40 Hz@83dB, our hearing requires 100dB of 20hz to sound equally loud. No problem most enthusiasts say. The real issue is distortion products of the 20hz tone. A 40 Hz harmonic needs to be 20 dB below the 20 Hz fundamental just to sound as if it is the same level or 100% 2nd harmonic distortion... quite the task. But, Pressure Vessel Gain to the rescue! The benefits of such room gain include reinforcement of the fundamental moreso than the harmonic above it ... I'm too lazy to do the maths right now. Yes, there's nothing like Open Baffle bass reproduction. Yes, there's nothing like Infinite Baffle bass reproduction. ...and there's nothing like a nice IPA;)

A good starting line is 1/4 into the front of the room for the Speakers and 1/3 from the back wall into the room for the listening position. Then you take the distance between the 1/4 line and 1/3 line, which will then be the width of your main Speakers apart ,from centre to center on the front baffles of the Speakers and then you toe in 17 degrees inwards from the foward firing position. All subwoofers should be placed around the 1/4 lines in the specified room if placements permit. You will find more accurate information on avtaudio.com or theonlineinstaller.com Email me at avtaudio@iway.na for pinpoint accuracy for your specified Speakers and subwoofers. If Paul is using an active electronic crossover, he can likely just dial in some delay, because yes, as the speakers stand, the bass will arrive at the listener’s ears after the rest of the music from the front towers (these are real towers, unlike the 3-foot-tall “towers” many people think of) arrives, which is particularly bad for percussion, if some comes through the bass towers and some comes through the treble towers. This is one of the advantages of using active crossovers.

If you are among the 95% of people who can’t turn a room into the perfect room for audio listening with the ideal spacing, cause the room is used for other things like watching TV or family get-together, you should consider adding a quality EQ and do some careful compensation. Just because it's a major plug for Paul's book doesn't mean the information is not valuable. A linguistic quibble with that term 'perfect', though. Nothing in this world is perfect. Perfect is mostly an advertising buzz word ("Perfect sound forever", any takers?). But it likely is optimal, i.e. about as good as Paul (and distinguished colleagues) can make it. The location of standing waves varies with wave length as they interact with the various room boundaries, so the optimal position for that chair, the sweet spot, is based on the perceived combination of frequencies from diverse music that Paul, the boss, enjoys.

All I know is that untreated room you have is ridiculous for those great speakers,you will never optimize there potential in that room you are literally stifling those speakers,owning great speakers so you can brag that you own them is a sin,get a real dedicated treated space for those speakers

I doubt it is compromised. This room was designed (w the speaker designer involved) and indeed optimized for THESE speakers. In fact it's clearly USING the room w bi-pole, line array speakers. Also has huge bass traps. (He admits it doesn't sound the best outside of the optimal listening position.)

I hate to say it fellas.... but you will NEVER achieve an acceptable low frequency response in a four sided and flat ceiling room... The ONLY way to solve the quirky eigentonic environment you use to listen in is to either knock down the wall opposite the low frequency drivers OR place 1 metre thick progressively dense acoustic fibre on this wall ...YES ! This will eliminate all the standing waves for good and you don't need to worry about where you sit any more .. A drastic solution .... ✅ Drastic results ? ....... ✅

I agree. Speaker/Room interaction are almost always inadequately addressed. Knock down that wall!!!
