How can I import the manually generated codes into the software to identify themes and verify if they align with my manual analysis?
@qualitativeresearcher

Thank you for this intersting video🤩. Please i have a question : when you create codes before creating categories and thems, the text is only existing in codes , there is 0 sources and references in categories and thems. So it would not impact the visualization of results ? We don't have to encode the same text in codes and categories and thems ? Thank you so much

Hola Dr Kriukow - I just came across this video... trying to get my head into Nvivo... this is probably a really basic question but I still don't get where the code sentences come from? Are they just sentences you have collected from the data? I am working on interviews at the moment that had structured questions... so should I just pull out sentences randomly that stand out etc? Should I look for similarities at this point? Sorry if my questions are obvious. Faval
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. You need to have your whole interview transcript/questionnaire, and import it to Nvivo. Then, you read it, and code the sentences in it. Not necessarily each sentence - sometimes it may be so, but sometimes you may code a whole chunk, a couple of sentences, etc - you just want to make sure to cover most topics they discuss with your codes. I do have several videos about the basics of coding, and in some of them I talk about what to code, so you may find those useful

@qualitativeresearcher

just select the codes, right click and copy/cut. Then go to the target location and paste. On the MAC version, there is no cut option, so you need to copy and paste and then go and delete the original

@qualitativeresearcher

I have several videos about this process Richard. You reduce the codes by combining them into meaningful themes, as well as organizing them into groups, sometimes merging, etc.
@marktarallo8459
@marktarallo8459 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your videos. Question: I have 3 different research questions in my study. In my case, would you suggest creating a separate folder under Nodes for each of my RQs and then move the codes that apply to that RQ into that corresponding folder? Then within each folder, I can start grouping into categories, deleting/merging redundant codes?
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, no I usually suggest keeping all of this in one folder. this is because more often than not, you will use various themes/sub-themes to jointly answer and discuss your research questions. it is not easy, usually not possible and, to be honest, not desirable, to be keeping themes/codes that are strictly linked to 1 RQ and not the other. For a variety of reasons this may be problematic. Having said this, I would not consider what you are suggesting a sin that should be avoided at all costs, and I think it is still possible to analyze your data and discuss the results properly this way, but based on my experience I just know this is not the ideal way in which I would like to approach this

Dear Dr. Kriukow, I am struggling a lot understanding the analysis process in generell between thematic and content analysis. Last time I was asked about the meaning of thematic analysis and just explained that it's all about seeing which kind of themes emerged from the data and you just analyze them. This person asked me if I'm sure that I'm not talking about the coding process? This is actually my problem. Looking for themes in generell sounds too for me like coding. Are there any videos, where I could see the analysis process of both thematic and content analysis? Still thank your for your great videos. :-)
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 2 жыл бұрын
Content analysis is similar to thematic analysis, and arguably I would even say includes thematic analysis to some extent, but the difference is in the output, as the aim is to specifically focus on frequency of certain "content" that we are looking for (e.g. certain expression, or more general theme). Very often, but not always, content analysis is also based on deduction, and the researcher is looking for specific things in the data. Regarding the other question, thematic analysis is really the continuation of coding, it starts with coding and then involves working on these codes, merging them, reorganizing, etc. to create broader themes.

Does a code need to be recurrent in more than one reference to be labeled as a code? or it can be a code even when mentioned once? thanks Dr. Kriukow
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 3 жыл бұрын
Even when it is mentioned once, it needs to be coded. Later, when you decide what to keep in your thematic framework, whilst most of the sub themes will be most likely to have been mentioned more than once, occasionally I do have some that were only mentioned once (but I believe it is important to report them)

I believe OBS also has a zoom feature - similar to how you increase and decrease the size of your face window. Please drop me a line at raihan.jamil@gmail.com and we can discuss collaboration if you are interested sir. Thank you!

Dr. Kriukow incase of mixed methods do we develop themes after having completed all phases of qual and quant or can we develop themes after 1 phase and then build on it after phase 2? Some codes will coincide and some will be new in the next phase.
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 3 жыл бұрын
depends on which design you follow. I do have some videos on Mixed methods research. In exploratory designs, for example, you analyze your qual data first, and develop themes, because based on this analysis you will develop the quantitative questionnaire

@@qualitativeresearcher My current research initiated with a quant phase followed by the qual phase. The quant phase had a lot of open end responses which I have already coded. However before working on the themes, I was thinking if I should first finish coding the Qual phase too and then generate themes because many codes I think are similar but there are also new codes. My research is mainly led by the qual data and so i was thinking I should finish coding this data and then work on themes all together.

Do you suggest that we start merging the codes even before coding of some more interviews is pending?
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 3 жыл бұрын
there is no rule for that and will depend on what you decide needs to be done and what is convenient to you. Usually I do prefer to organize the codes a bit before proceeding to code the remaining transcripts, but sometimes I code everything first and only then start to organize the coding framework

Dr. Kriukow Do have a video showing the newest NVIVO windows interface? In particular in vivo coding where the category will emerge. The left side section of the NVIVO has different terms - no nodes? May thanks. Jim
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 3 жыл бұрын
I don't but the update you are talking about has the exact same functions, only the design has changed slightly. If there are no "nodes" then there are "codes", one of the 2 as QSR has been using these 2 interchangeably

@@qualitativeresearcher Thank you for your quick reply. I have been trying to extract text from interviews and placing directly in the workspace. I drag and drop text, in vivo coding (via the right-click) into the workspace. Once I have all my "codes" I can not seem to create categories? When I drag and drop one individual code to combine it with another I do not see a way to names the category? I am sure it is a simple thing and I am just missing it...
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 3 жыл бұрын
@@jimstringfield2596 Hi Jim, I am not sure what you mean by "categories" as there is no such option in NVivo. If you mean higher and lower level codes or, in NVivo terms, Parent and Child codes respectively, if you cut a code and then paste it onto another code, it becomes the latter's child code. You can also drag and drop it there. Unless you are using the MAC version which is a bit different

@@qualitativeresearcher Perhaps I am working from a false assumption? I thought the basic unit of analysis is a code, these codes can be grouped into categories, and the categories will lead to themes? Those very broad ideas that answer the research questions? Thanks
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 3 жыл бұрын
@@jimstringfield2596 this is just one of possible classifications. Also, it is problematic to be using these terms in the context of NVivo, because as I said, for NVivo there is technically no difference between the above. It is also hard to decide when a "code", for example, would become an analytic category or let alone a theme. Thus, as I explain in one of my videos, for the purpose of clarity I usually stick to codes, and only call them themes once they are the "final" version of these codes :)

Hi, I was watching your video, very helpful, but I was wondering is this the same step as axial coding? Or is that a different step? Hopefully you can help me! :)
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, this can very well fit into the category of axial coding, or focused coding. The point is to stay focused on the goal, on the research questions and the aims of the study, and later you can fit these steps into an existing framework (such as the one you mentioned) when you are expected to describe these steps

Is nvivo 12 free?
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 6 ай бұрын
no it is not, unfortunately. Although many universities provide free license to their students and staff. If you need it for personal use, it is ridiculously expensive, but there are some cheaper alternatives, such as MAXQDA, Atlas.ti or Quirkos

This is a great resource. However, to me, it felt like the intricate details of your specific project were unnecessary and boring. This may lead to losing track of the key learning goal. Please try to be more specific and talk more about the overall process in the beginning. Try to keep the video short for easy learning.

thank you for the feedback, I do find any comments useful. I know I tend to talk too much in general, it is true, but in this case I did feel that the details of the project were crucial in order to later understand my reasoning behind the 2 different approaches to creating a thematic framework
