+colombiawithanit a I'm from Boston, and Bostonians (and people from the northeast, New York, Philadelphia) naturally walk fast, due to the fast pace of life, wanting to get things done. Other parts of the US not so much, but obviously by your experience Americans tend to walk faster...at least in Colombia. If you ever visit Boston (or New York, Philly), you'll find most people naturally walk fast, so it's not because of fear, that's just how we move.

Hey Anita, it was useful to hear some things you mentioned. About the way I dress, well I have to say when I was in Colombia I did dress like the cliches you mentioned and I looked like a tourist from head to toe :-).... But that's only because for me clothes are just practical and should be comfy. Also, when you're used to cold weather (I'm from Belgium), long trousers, socks and shoes are just too hot in such temperatures! And apart from that, I just don't care about how I dress because I think it's just clothes and the person underneath it is all that matters. (but that makes me pretty much an exception in my own country too, so...). In belgium I also tend to ask people for directions and info.. it's faster and doesn't create a distance between myself and 'strangers'. I did pay attention to not slam the doors when I was in Medellin :D. Another thing I "copied" from my Colombian friends is to hug a friend. Here it's not common to do so, but I think it's nice. I am planning to come back to Medellin in october, it's such a thriving, young and sunny city. I would like to live and work in Colombia but wouldn't know what job to do. Do you have an idea what profiles in the labour market are heavily wanted? I'm thinking perhaps in the IT business or teaching English, but not sure where to start. Oh and isn't "gringo" not a pretty pejorative and perhaps racist word? To be honest I always hated to be called like that....

Personally i loved asking local colombians for help with directions, and i even had a girl in medellin who was working in a shoe store, walking 200m with me to find the correct street (while she was at work) i couldn't find myself, and even tho we didn't find it in the end, she was the sweetest person to help me, very open and lovely. it's absolutely joy to ask the girls about anything

Most of the crimes involving foreigners happens in taxis. If it's your first time visiting Colombia and are not fluent in Spanish I STRONGLY RECOMMEND going with someone you know who is fluent, have someone you know and can trust that is there to assist you, or go with a tour guide. Colombia is a beautiful country with beautiful people, but be aware that there are unseen dangers there. Research before you go so you know what to expect.

Here's how you can tell I'm a Gringo in Colombia: You just look at me. It doesn't matter what I wear, I look like a blue eyed white boy whether I'm wearing shorts or not. Here's some advice to travelling Gringos... You just do you. Wear what you want. The Colombians won't judge you for what you look like. If you're cool, they'll like you.

I am Asian from the U.S. and my wife is from Colombia. I was aware that men and women still wore suits and tie for work in Colombia. Unlike the typical American who dressed like a bum all over the world. I always dressed nice and elegant everywhere in Colombia and in other countries all over the world. Colombians seemed to respect me more and treated me nicer for the way I dressed. I never wore T-shirts or Flip Flops or tennis sneaks. I don't even own a pair of jeans despite that they are popular in Colombia. The only thing I did different was hiding my expensive watch and wore a cheap plastic Casio to avoid thieves.

You just do you? Wear what you want? Sounds very disrespectful. When I plan to visit Medellin Colombia I plan to follow her advise, even though I dont wear sandels, or shorts anyway not unless I'm swimming. Your visiting a foreign country always wanna respect their culture, fashion etc...

You might be right mr, you need to make your own blog, no. Es tan importante la gramatica desde mi punto de vista, es solo una observation, saludos, es you tube no es Harvard style blogging,.
@hmax15918 жыл бұрын

That's true with asking for directions. I was in Bogota and can speak a little Spanish. Even with that little Espanol, I made lot of Friends and could understand when they communicated. Eventually, it all matters to having a connection with the people and more importantly, how you treat others. You want to treat others they way you want to be treated by them. "Colombianos, Muy Amiables ! " Gracias !

In America we dress for comfort, not for other people. My wife is from South America. She takes too much time to dress, puts on too much makeup. I like her for her - not her makeup. Once she asked me what sort of shoes she should wear - I showed her a picture in an LL Bean catalog. She accused me of intentionally picking out the ugliest shoe. But I thought it the shoe I wanted was durable and gave good foot support. Later on she came around to my way of thinking. She doesn't go for the european fashions but buys from LLBean and Lands end.

I've visited Bogota and Cartagena. I thing is not so good to be BLACK in BOGOTA. People are not friendly in BOGOTA. No smile on their face. Is like BLACK people are not welcome in BOGOTA. They don't really look at you and ignore you. Nothing to do in BOGOTA.
@colombiawithanita7 жыл бұрын
LeVilageKana you are right, people in Bogota are not kind, even to myself colombians are pretty regionalist as well if they know I'm from medellin usually they don't like you
@LeVilageKana7 жыл бұрын
Es algo muy RARO por un pais LATINO. En Mexico y en otros paises Latinos la gente no es asi. Era una decepcion muy alta de ver y saber que la gente en Colombia (BOGOTA) es ASI. Tienes que hacer una video de eso !!!!
@LeVilageKana7 жыл бұрын
In Fact, they just hide that kind of Racism. We went in Mexico, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Costa Rica. People are very friendly. Nothing to do and to see with Colombia (Bogota). Colombia has just changed my perception of this country. I was very surprised. In the restaurant, before you start to speak, they are very cold and then when they realize that ur not from the country, they start to smile!!!! That means that if I was a Black Colombian, they will not just want me in their restaurant!!!
