1989 I was 11yo. Watched Papin shooting a banger at the last minute of a match and fell in love with football. He was truly a pure forward, made to score goals after goals. Sadly he taught me also irony and I still remember vividly that evening when Marseille won the 1993 first ever Champion's League against the great Milan... I couldn't feel but sad for him in all my joy. I was jumping everywhere like crazy. Boli's header ended a truly hard battle, I can never think of this game as tainted.

Papin, at his best, was a kind of MBappe and Haland combined. But unfortunately, France's national team was at its lowest ever. He got really unlucky : arriving 5 years after, he would have been world champion with Zidane. 5 years earlier, he would have played with Platini's dream team (and maybe won 1 or 2 world cups, in 82 an 86). Absolute legend. Thanks for this video.

Cantona was one of the best number 10 / second striker in the world. Ginola was arguably a top 3 winger in the 90s. They had too much ego and back then PSG/OM rivalry was serious in France. Since the 80s we pretty much always had great player but too much ego. With better attitude, we would have won more trophies with such legendary players.

I wished the 3 foreign rule did not exist in 92-93. Those few games where Papin paired with Van Basten was potential the making of a legendary partnership. Still remember the goal he scored again Lazio where he jumped like a cat to lob the ball over the keeper after a long ball from Gullit. Not a goal like some of the bangers he scored but one I loved Legend in my books

Missed out on Platini's golden days (1986 didn't count) and Zidane's golden days cuz stuck right between 😭

It was a missed opportunity that Papin missed Euro 1988(as European Champions not qualified, 2nd country who missed a country as champions) World Cup 1990 and World Cup 1994. It was a transitional era at that time, but it felt that France should have continue their legacy of the carre magique. Papin would have suceed Platini's succes.

@@lexkanyima2195 1994 France had a number of generational talents too. Must've been seriously poor management when losing to Israel in qualifiers

@@doncarloancelotti2256 but by 1992 Platini was sacked and he should never retire in 1987 he could retire in 1992 to help Papin's success. It was odd how it was named a cursed generation between 1986 to 1994. France should have made it in Euro 1988, World Cup 1990 and World Cup 1994 if they didn't have bad luck on their side.

Odd his time at Milan is considered a complete failure and yet he scored 31 goals in 63 games during his 2 years there that were partly spoiled by injury.Pretty decent record if you ask me

Wonderful player at his prime, loved watching him. Absolute travesty the way he was treated in some places, especially by the national team.
