Werner Kemperer (aka Col. Klink) was Jewish and had to escape from Nazi Germany as they started to consolidate their power. (So was Leon Askin who fled Austria (the scar. on his check was from the Nazi's SA ("Brown Shirts") and John Banner. Robert Clary was a child in occupied France and as a Jew he was sent to a Concentration Camp and survived.)

And he famously took the role of Klink only if they never, ever, *ever* showed Klink winning against Hogan.

Indeed, all of the Nazi's portrayed were done by Jewish actors. Leon Askin (Gen. Burkhalter) escaped from Austria, but losing his parents in the Treblinka concentration camp. Howard Caine (Gestapo Maj. Hochstetter) family name was Cohen, born in Tennessee.

Always a treat to see an actor known for primarily one role, play something totally opposite his stereotype. Although it would come later in his career. Klemperer would always be known as the fidgety, fussy grovelling worm of a Nazi, Col.Klink. But here in this scene, his stillness as his fellow inmate lays out the logistics of mass murder, is terrific .

That was why he was chosen for this role, and (if interviews with him later are to be believed) why he took the role.

@@f1b0nacc1sequence7 Most of the major principle Germans in the show were all Jewish...as were the prisoners...that was one of the points.

@@f1b0nacc1sequence7 Judgement at Nuremberg as released in 1961, while Hogan's Heroes, of which Klemperer was known for, didn't come out until 1964. Klemperer did play another prominent Nazi figure, Adolf Eichmann, in Operation Eichmann (1961). His portrayal of Eichmann is chilling in it's calm and businesslike demeanor.

I remember that scene well. Powerfull words. Yes it is heart wrenching to hear that......and admission of guilt and yet, how many answered not guilty??? I still have a hard time seeing those pictures they showed in that movie. I cant help but cry and sob just thinking how can anyone see this without ANY reaction?? I cant.💞💞

Movies like this, 12 Angry Men, and Inherit the Wind should be compulsory viewing in our schools. If history teaches us anything, when too much time passes people tend to forget, at the cost of our humanity.

I agree with you however now in many states particularly Florida anything like that is being banned . Books such as Catcher In the Rye , To Kill A Mockingbird, banned. These are Fascist leanings.

Apologies if you're a Trump supporter, but under his pernicious influence they are the new fascists, something never seen in this country before. They are the party of intolerance, racism and authoritarianism. And nothing they've done in the past few years has changed my mind.

Even as a young boy watching Hogan's Heroes was incredibly bizarre. Only 20 years after the end of World War II a series about POW Nazi camps with a laugh track...

His interviews about this in later years was very interesting. He said paraphrasing ; only if he was always the one being my fun of. He came across very well. Take care.

I've been reading Mel Brooks' autobiography and in the chapter about making the Producers, he talks about the play within the movie, Springtime for Hitler, and his point of view was that by making Nazis and Hitler the butt of the jokes, you essentially take away their power.
