Interesting video - looking forward to more of these. For the section on Egypt, it is worth noting that there were some quite distinctive transitional flags historically. During the Ottoman and British colonial periods, for example, and immediate post WW2 dynasty (before the adoption of the pan Arabic colours). This included the use of Turkish influenced red flags, as well as green and white in some subsequent ones.

Estonia, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Sweden and Germany have the most explicit flags... Estonia: look at a forest line on a clear winter day: Blue sky, almost black treeline, white snow. Ireland: green everywhere, almost white cloudy skies, ginger people everywhere 😀 Spain: the sun makes you squint on the dusty village plaza, so all you see is a yellow slit between the red of your two eyelids. Italy: red tomato sauce, white mozzarella, green basil leaves, enjoy your pizza sir! Sweden: blond, blue-eyed people, ok. Germany: Steel plant at dusk under a menacing sky.

6:50 The new SA flag clearly still has the red/white/blue of the Dutch flag in the background, with another layer on top of it, merged via Union Jack-inspired diagonals. This layer uses the green that is common in the Transvaal flag, adding black and yellow for a complete pan-African colour palette (see the flags of Ethiopia and Ghana). You say there is no obvious connection to older flags, but that seems like a pretty clear connection; the only unclear connection is the shape. 9:30 Should've mentioned that orange=Protestant is because orange=Netherlands=Protestant, otherwise the connection between the colour and the religion doesn't make any sense.

Blue, red and white were all once used as a symbol or a flag. The first two have relegious connotation: blue is linked to St Martin and red to St Denis. Both of these saint had been important and it is nothworthy that the early Capetian (the french roayl dinatsy) possessed the abbaye of St Denis as well as the city of Paris. White was also associated with Joan of Arc. In the end those colors have long historic connection to France. They also regained popularity after the war of american independance.

In Spain the first flag was the Standart of the Visigoths, a black cross with circles in it's extremes over a white field, then with the fall of the Kingdom, the Ummayad Cordoban Emirate later Caliphate had a solid white standart, the Kingdom of Asturias in the north had the Asturian Cross over a white field, then various Kingdoms had their own standarts and flags, but the next relevant one was that of the Catholic Monarchs, with a single heraldic shield combining the ones of Castille and Aragon, then we adopted the red Cross of Burgundy over a white field (and sometimes the flag was one with a white fiels and the coat of arms of the current monarch) up until 1785 when King Carlos III issued the "rojigualda" (red, yellow, red) that we have today, save for some changes in the coat of arms and the brief period of the 2nd Republic when the lower red band was turned purple.

Calling the Visigothic standard "the first Spanish flag" is stretching it a bit... The Union of South Africa , which later brcame the Republic of South Afr8ca, was formed in 1910 by the union of 4 British colonies, two of which had, until the South African War of 1899 to 1902, been independent republislcs. At the time of this Union, one of these Colonies, the Cape of Good Hope colony, had already been in existence for 258 years, while the aforesaid S.A. Republic (The Transvaal Colony,) had only been in existence for 50 years as an independent republic and eight years as a British colony. So why choose its flag as thr "first flag of South Africa". A very good case could be made for calling the first Union flag of 1910 (the one based on the British red ensigb) as " The first flag of South Africa" as it was the first flag of the united country. But if you want to include predecessor states, then why choose the "Vierkleur", the flag of the second youngest predecessor state? If you Re counting predecessor states, then surely the first South African flag was the flag ofvthe VOC (United Netherlands East India Company) which flew over the Cape Colony since the Dutch settlement was first founded in 1652 until it was handed over to the UK in 1814 (before the S.A.R. even existed. Secondly, you mention that the second Union of S.A. flag, the one with three small flags superimposed. on the Netherlands flag, is the one "Associated" by many with the "apartheid regime" The only purpose for such a statement that I can see is to subscribe to "political correctness" as seen by foreigners, and to spread racial hatred against a former South African government. To say that the South Africsn flag of that time is associated with a regime that espoused racism, is like saying that the current South African flag is associated with a "regime" that espouses crime, corruption and governmental incompetence, that the British Union Flag is associated with colonialism or that the U.S. flag is associated with jingoistic nationalism, unjust capitalism or Trumpism. All of these statements are true to some degree, but they are all unfair and inflammatory. But why is it that we keep hearing the first one over and over again, but seldom if ever hear the other three?j A natonal flag does not represent a government, a political party "regime" It represents a nation and its people, and in the case of South Africa it represents a damn fine nation and many kinds of people. No South African government bears the official title of "The Apartheit Regime" . That title is an invention of their oponents, The political party that invented the policy of "Apartheid" and put it into practice in South Africa (and finally, after much pressure repealed it, putting themselves out of businrss), was the National Party, which ruled South Africa from 1948 until 1997, If you want to point fingers, point it at them, not at the South African Flag. The second union flag was the South African flag from 1928, a full 20 years before the Nationalists came into power, During the Second World War, tens of thousands of South African citizens of all races (but mostly the Whites whom this generation loves to hate) took up arms on the side of the Allies against the Axis powers, and many thousands lost their lives in the defence of democracy, fighting UNDER THAT SAME FLAG that you now vilify ss "associated with the apartheit regime". (Where, I ask myself, are those Allies now that South Africa needs them) South Africa is not proud of some of the things their politicians and administrators, have done, from Dutch times up until the present day. But they are proud of their country and of their flags, past and present, and rightly so. So please keep to the history, and try to make it as accurate as possible, but leave the trite and unhelpful.political comments of your videos.
