To be honest they look almost exactly the same. I wouldn't be able to tell which one is the Japanese one at a glance. The difference in style is a lot more subtle than the range of styles on sites like pixiv, ranging from ultra realistic to Western cartoonish to different anime styles. This is especially easy to see if you look for pictures of Pokemon characters. It really just shows that it's not really the style that matters, but how much effort you put into making it look good.

Tawna's disappearing was probably to do with continuity, similar to what they did in N. Sane Trilogy where she gets grabbed by Cortex every time. Also I find it incredibly ironic how Japanese marketers felt the need to add a hint system to Crash Bandicoot with Aku Aku given their reputation with making games much more difficult, in particular Mario, which is also a platformer.

Sonic isn't really popular in Japan, Sega made him strictly to appease to Westerners such as Americans and Europeans. I mean his personality alone is a mixture of 90s American youth culture and Bill Clinton.
@Alienrun
@Alienrun 7 жыл бұрын
Sega themselves have said that he was made with Western and Japaneese audiences in mind. Sega of America was worried that Sonic would fail, so they made Sonic look more edgy in the marketing, changed Eggman's name, and even changed his backstory. ...Unlike Kirby, a majority of that was dropped after the success of Sonic 1 and 2.
@Thomas-te2lg
@Thomas-te2lg 7 жыл бұрын
I'd argue he still retains many of the characteristics that were placed on him by Sega and America. As I said, he doesn't have that much appeal in Japan today, its Americans, North Americans and Europeans that are nuts about him. And one of the reasons I've been told as to why he isn't popular in Japan is because he's too edgy and cocky.
@Alienrun
@Alienrun 7 жыл бұрын
+Thomas Ruth Considering that USA has very little control over how the games are handled outside of localazation, I don't think that's entirely true. The games in between 98 and 06 for instance come off as Japan TRYING to appeal to a western audience but doesn't really know how. Sure you got Shadow with guns and even a Final Fantasy esc like game in 06, but its still very obviously a Japanese game. If anything it didn't start to really become truely "americanized" until Unleashed moving forward with very basic plots and art styles. So in a way, Sonic is very much American since the JP market for him is very dead. But I think it has very little to do with the marketing in the 90's as that VERY quickly ended up being a fad that most people don't remember these days! :/

As a Japanese, I was always wondering why Crash's appearance is very different in the actual gameplay. But IIRC, it was explained in one of the extra movies included in Crash 3. And about the two-headed enemies; My guess is that they got censored because in Japan, any negative depictions of physical disabilities and birth abnormalities are strongly considered taboo.

Now I'm curious as to how Crash in Smash would work. If not his model, at least his render. There'll most likely be different renders depending on the selected language. Using the Japanese design will be very off putting to America, which is where Crash was born, but using the American design will be very off putting to Japan, which is where Smash is developed.

I would imagine it would be like Wario or BOTW Link or 90% of Ultimate these days, where there are Costumes for both versions so people can play both. Don't forget that Marth and Roy was going to be Japanese only but they changed there minds when the series was going to release in the west. Or they may do what you said or a combo of both looks, Either way, If the Japanese Crash theme isn't in all versions of the game I will be disappointed.

Considering Sakurai respects the source material of the characters, he would 100% use the original US design. Maybe the spirits would be different but not the 3D render and model

I mean, you don't like cute things? I bet that there's an animal in the world that you like because it's cute and because you think it's cute. Besides, I agree on the concept that showing a character that looks cute for the box art can affect the sales positively since the game is being targeted towards children. In my opinion, I prefer the japanese box art taking nostalgia aside. I mean, I am not a huge fan of those art styles that purposely make the characters look gross like the disgusting cartoon that is "Almost Naked Animals". The same applies for art styles that make character just look... a bit too crazy and ugly. So yeah, I like cute instead of ugly. If something looks better, I lean more towards it. Also, japan is not really obsessed with anything cute. It's the same country that make some really... weird commercials and horror movies and games.

I've heard that the double headed censor was to avoid possible issues with the fact that Japan was bombed with radiation and seen as mockery of that like mutation and everything. Pretty much like if there were to add in a flighting game an episode where a plane hit some towers for example. Or like they remove the Nazi reference on German games.

1:59 I think this was explained in the remake tho since at the end of the bonus stage cortex would re-kidnap her, probably it was a slight hiccup since Tawna was supposed to being capture by cortex in the first place and won't make sense if she is at the bonus stage. So they make her disappeared like she been kidnapped since the Japanese version came second before the US release.

What other word could I have used for someone who stereotypes people of a nation? And I don't call everything racist. I am calling you racist based off of how you talk about american people. Even then, when you replied to me you sounded like someone who looks down on others, and again most proven when you said this : " What a typical American remark", as if you act better. What I am trying to say is that everyone is different and where you live or what your race is doesn't just determine how someone thinks, acts, or feels about things. That is why I called you stupid, for actually believing that because someone lives in America(or better known as the USA) means that they can't see logic, which that statement itself isn't logical.
