After becoming a laughing stock for their dated appearance and numerous design flaws, Doctor Who's iconic Daleks were in dire need of fixing when the show came back in 2005. This revitalisation came with the Series 1 episode titled simply 'Dalek' And it is amazing.

This Dalek in particular shows the range emotions Daleks can truly feel, deep down. And I mean before it incorporated Rose's DNA to mutate itself. Even when it was just a regular Dalek, finding out that it was the absolute last of its kind (so everyone thought at the time) caused it to experience loneliness. Who would have thought the Daleks cared how many there were? So long as they could continue their mission in some form you'd think they would be fulfilled. But obviously they gain something, deep down, by having comrades to fight alongside (perhaps they believe the only way to improve a perfect life form is to increase their numbers, so with only one remaining it would be a devastating blow). And finding out that the war was over, and that it no longer had *any* purpose shook the Dalek to its very core. It genuinely panicked. If it could truly only experience hatred then it would have just verbally lashed out at the Doctor instead of lamenting on being the last of its kind. This Dalek and others throughout the series show that when a Dalek experiences trauma that is beyond the greatest of extremes, it will break, and it will feel more than just hatred.

One other small detail I always notice about this episode: When the Dalek electrocutes all the soldiers, I always thought it was kind of grim that there's an unarmed scientist in a lab coat among them. It's such a small detail but it goes a long way to emphasising that everyone is under threat, not just the armed guards on the front line.

This is literally my favorite episode. This is the episode where the Doctor goes from being the war-grizzled trigger-happy veteran to the forgiving, I-never-would Doctor we know and love, to the point where in Parting of the Ways, when the Doctor is about to activate the Delta Wave, and is in the same position he was in in the Time War where he can kill an entire species in order to kill all the Daleks, but this time, he can't do it. Another thing is that if you watched this episode without seeing any other episode of Doctor Who, without knowing the Doctor is the protagonist, you'd think the Doctor was the bad guy and the Dalek was the good guy

I really liked how 13 dealt with the Dalek. At this point, 13 was still unhindered by her past and is a changed person. 13 recognises the danger, but she doesn't let her hatred overwhelm her. She destroys the Dalek because of her love for her friends, not because of her hatred towards the Daleks. It was a perfect continuation of how 12 interacted with the Daleks. Resolution was actually a pretty good Dalek story, yes it's still just a worse version of 'Dalek' but it shows how much the Doctor has changed, how much kinder she's become since the Time War.

I heard a point that dalek can be used as a metaphor for the return of Doctor who. This is Rob Sherman so apparently meta commentary is his thing so I don't know. In essence, doctor represents the return of doctor who, a show from the sixties being alone with no other shows from that era still being around. I'm not in depth on this so someone better than me could explain it. As for the episode itself I don't think the daleks have really ever topped this other than maybe the finale of series 1. The threat got bigger but the daleks never got deadlier. The only way I can see DW topping this is if this was repeated in some way with a single dalek in a finale that makes the doctor regenerate. Eccelston is amazing in this, you might say fantastic. The cold way he says "fantastic" always gives me shivers without fail. Anywho another great analysis from you and can't wait till the next one. Though could we skip the long game as that video does hold up and fathers day is so much more interesting

Ecclestone refused to return. Plus, the line about his ears in Rose hinted that he'd only just regenerated. John Hurt's Doctor actually slots into the timeline very nicely because Paul McGann doesn't have the grit to play a Warrior and although Ecclestone does, you'd have to ask "Did he NEVER see his ears throughout the entire Time War?"

I really like Christopher "Every planet has a North" Eccleston as The Doctor, he's undoubtedly a good actor and character, I especially enjoy the way he chides humanity for getting too big for its boots, something I think might have put off some younger viewers. And as you point out he does show fear and despair toward the dalek, but I don't feel like he gives it a hard enough time when the anger does swell up, I wonder how much more callous and venomous he could have been to the dalek and still kept me on side

What I personally love about the episode is the fact that as a new watcher of Doctor Who, I knew Jack shit about the previous series. So seeing the word “Dalek” never set off any alarm bells for me. What really got me wasn’t the name of the episode or even the reveal, but the sheer terror the doctor has at seeing the one thing that can take him down. This guy I had perceived up until that point to be virtually unstoppable…was scared

This was just one Dalek. John Hurt's Doctor spent centuries obliterating armies of them. He was Gallifrey's mightiest warrior during the Time War and according to Hell Bent, he could walk onto a battlefield without a weapon and leave a massacre in his wake. We get a hint of this in Day of the Doctor where he picks up a gun just to blast NO MORE onto a wall, then gives it back to the soldier he took it from and uses the TARDIS to smash a group of Daleks aside like bowling pins. Ecclestone's regeneration turned the Doctor into a coward. He admitted this in his final episode. Hurt's Doctor wouldn't have freaked out because obliterating Daleks was par for the course to him.

I really like the contrast between how the Doctor sees the Daleks in the classic series compared to the revival In 'Genesis of the Daleks' the 4th Doctor had the chance to destroy the Daleks completely, but he believed that doing so would put him on the same level as them and he refused to kill them even though they were irredeemably evil. But then you see what the consequences of that were, as Gallifrey was destroyed as a result of a war against the creatures that he had the chance to destroy before it could begin, and you see the toll that war took on the Ninth Doctor. The mercy he showed the Daleks back on Skaro has gone. It makes me wonder, does the Doctor ever think about his decision to spare the Daleks instead of destroying them? Does he (or she in the case of the 13th Doctor) regret the choice they made? If they could return to that point on Skaro and make the decision again, knowing the fate that would befall Gallifrey, would they show the same kind of mercy as the 4th Doctor? Or would they, like the 9th Doctor, decide that they're undeserving of mercy?

One of the reasons that #9 is the best Doctor is that he exhibits PTSD resulting from The Time War (over and over again during his time period). His first meeting with the Dalek - whose race he destroyed - naturally releases his PTSD to overwhelm him. And being able to express "being overwhelmed and uncertain" is one reason that #9 is the best.

To be honest I don't even despise the Daleks in a way. I despise Davros. The Daleks literally have no choice but to act the way they do. Humans are capable of a wide array of emotions which allow them to understand the difference between right and wrong. So when a human takes an action that harms someone, they are to blame because they know better. Even if they don't care, they do no better. A Dalek on the other hand simply does not have the ability to understand these concepts and is genetically engineered to act in a specific way. To be born, cursed with the ability to only feel hatred (generally, they are capable of experiencing fear and dismay in very, very extreme circumstances, and mutated, sick or insane Daleks are wildcards) is truly a terrible fate. And what a cold, lonely existence, their actual bodies barely capable of surviving unless put inside a weapon. And we know the machinery the Daleks live inside is hooked into their brain. It determines their protocols and can even influence their memories. The Daleks may be monsters who need to be destroyed, but I don't blame them for being born without a choice. I blame Davros for creating beings so cursed and so destructive, and unleashing them upon the universe.

2:11 is he though. It is true that most modern billionaires don't have torture prisons where they keep the people they own and experiment on but I am not entirely convinced they wouldn't if they were allowed.

Pre-Time War Daleks have been vulnerable to rockets and explosives, but during the Time War, they upgraded their shells. It takes specialized weapons to penetrate the Dalekanium shell now.

This episode predicted the future. Van Statten asks Diane whether the next president should be Republican or a Democrat and she says Democrat. in 2012 Obama a Democrat won the election and secured his second term as President.

I've never thought the Daleks or Cybermen were scary. Like, at all, they just look like tin can and tinmen from the Wizard of Oz. The Weeping Angel are scary as fuck though.
