Having mucked around with whips alot when I was younger... - Your choice of a bullwhip for this was perfect. A bullwhip with a longer handle would've decreased the physcial effort. Bullwhips have the best accuracy. And snake whips, but they are difficult. - The vertical cracking technique you tried towards the start of the video is actually the easiest to learn, the most accurate, and I would argue the most powerful, and the safest. - The best tip I can give you.... to help you with any technique, is that whatever movement you are doing, when done correctly,actually sends a coil down the length of the whip, which makes it crack away from you. Even done slowly will result in a crack. The reducing width of the whip, increase the speed the coil moves, leverage is in your favour. Most techniques require a steady application of power through the handle, not a sudden jerk, thats why you whipped yourself. 🙂 - Adding steel to a whip at the end is EXTREMELY dangerous. It has a heavier density than the cracker and leather, and can break towards you, and send sharpnel your way. - If destroying something or hitting something hard with accuracy, you actually want to strike with the last bit of leather down the length of the whip (Knot conencting the cracker), not the cracker itself. There is a one thing about the technique that Anthony De Longis exploited for better control and accuracy with a whip. He calls it the De Longis loop. The idea is to loop the spine so the whip has a direction to go than flailing wildly. You would have to watch his videos to see how it's done. There's also a mythbusters episode where Adam learns how to use the whip properly from Anthony De Longis. De Longis worked with Michelle Pfeifer and Harrison Ford. Great job with the effort. Pretty awesome how much work you put into it. :)

When I was learning using a whip. I first spin over my head to make my muscle aware of whip's mass and distribution. And later I try to break the spin in middle slowly to make small whip attacks. And I practice it until my body learns to maintain distance of whip end and my body's most outer edge. And slowly i increasing the strength I put on whip. That's a good way to learn whip without hurting yourself.

The crack of a whip is actually created by it breaking the sound barrier. You are hearing it make a sonic boom. They are powerful and obviously being on the receiving end of a whip lashing when cracked properly would be far more than just unpleasant. They can create severe lacerations that cut straight to the bone. They are not a joke and also not a toy.

I like this particular video more than everything else for a super cool reason I'm watching a grown man, in 2024 do almost EXACTLY what my best friend and I did down in the canyon by our houses in 1989, for almost 6-7 hours on a hot summer day. We legit got a whip like that from this little grocery store, that did Haloween costumes during the season. Think I bought it for a few dollars, but it was NOT a toy whip, it was a legit leather whip. Anyways the next summer my friend and I set up with a few sawhorses and boards, a target area, and spent those hours going from "never cracked a whip" to blowing up a full pepsi can. No eye protection,.,and somehow neither of us took out an eye or anything. This was the 80s...we had like 20 something lawn darts too (and almost impaled the neighbor girl one time with them) I hit my leg really bad, enough to draw blood and leave a gnarly mark that lasted months, friend made it out unscathed. The literal next weekend, my uncle, who was a ranger, gave me a LEGIT lasso, the coated, hard rope kind. We spent hours with that too, later on made lasso's out of shorter rope. I got so good, I took it to my dad's dealership, and like 7 of the guys would gather round as I lasso'd the side mirrors of all the showroom cars on the first try from multiple distances up to 30ft. What's the lesson here, your Gen Z mind is asking? The Internet is probably the greatest human invention, ever....and you can learn how to do anything from watching video's, or reading....but the Internet also sucks....a lot. Go outside, just go DO stuff man.

You found it hard because you miss on the Physics principle behind it. You don't just swing it around randomly - you need to create a wave to propagate through the whip. There is a reason why it is thick on the handle and it thins out as it moves along its length: the energy you impart to it at the handle is specific and the wave you create accelerates down its length so as to fulfil the energy retention principle since the whip becomes lighter and lighter as the wave moves along it and the mass of the medium that the wave propagates through is a factor in the energy it is carrying. So in order for the energy to remain constant the speed must increase. So instead of just swinging it like a flail you must create a wave onto it, like how we see the pros do.
