For intubation, to avoid malignant hyperthermia why don’t we use dantrolene instead?

Hi, I really enjoyed this video and it was really helpful for a report I am writing on MH but I have a question, if that is ok? If succinylcholine causes the release of Ca2+ into the cytoplasm (which it does), this is also what causes the symptoms in MH cases, but why does succinylcholine only cause MH in patients susceptible to MH? Surely due to the action of succinylcholine, it can cause MH in patients that aren't MH susceptible? Thanks

Glad to hear that you liked the video. Exactly, any drug that excessively releases calcium from the internal stores of muscle may result in MH just like succinylcholine.

How does succinylcholine produces paralysis by prolong action..plz explain sir..
@egpat4 жыл бұрын
Succinylcholine is not metabolised by the acetycholinesterases at synaptic cleft so it shows a prolonged action on nACh receptors leading to persistent depolarization. Due to this persistent action, muscle is desensitized and finally paralyzed.

How dantrolene is not used to prevent the action of succinylcholine..plz explain
@egpat4 жыл бұрын
Succinylcholine can be used as muscle relaxant in few of the surgical procedures like tracheal intubation. But one of its main side effect is malignant hyperthermia produced by its persistent action on skeletal muscle. If succinylcholine produces any such significant side effect due to overdose or any other factors, then dantrolene is given to antagonize the side effect which inhibits calcium release. So the purpose of dantrolene is to antagonize malignant hyperthermia but not to prevent muscle relaxation.
