How Did Chelsea Win Their First Premier League Title? [And How Good Were Chelsea Before 2005?]

In 2005, Chelsea FC won the Premier League title for the first time ever, and arguably had the best season in the club's history, even to this day.
However, that was quite some time ago and there were a large amount of factors that led to this happening. With that being said, two questions come to mind:
Firstly, how did they do it? and secondly, how good were they before this season?

As a Man Utd fan that season was so frustrating for me... After Arsenal were finally starting to show signs of weakness suddenly Chelsea out of nowhere became an even more imposing team. You could NOT get pass Terry that season, AT ALL. Drogba and Lampard tortured every defense in the league. Cech's saves were ridiculous.

Chelsea's rise contributed to making the Premier league one of the most entertaining leagues in the world. Otherwise, it would have turned into a 2 team league like Bundesliga or La Liga. United would have absolutely dominated the league excessively.

The icing on this beautiful cake of a video is how Ranieri's story continued. He beat Jose Mourinho and got him sacked for the second time at Chelsea, went on to win the league that season after Chelsea drew with Spurs and the next game he was given the guard of honour at Stamford Bridge by Chelsea, it was a fairy tale like no other. He also sold Kante to Chelsea who won the league the following season as well as the PFA player of the year

,You make it appear as if Mourinho and Ranieri are two sworn enemies. What has Mourinho got to do with Ranieri and Chelsea? Was Mourinho responsible for Ranieri Sack by Chelsea? Or were you expecting Mourinho to reject Chelsea job bcos Ranieri was sacked? So,What are you driving at ? Besides, Having bought and invested in Chelsea, Abramovic want someone who will begin to win Trophies and he deemed it proper that Mourinho was the right man for the job. Hence, Mourinho's arrival. And he was proven right bcos immediately, Mourinho delivered Premier league Trophy back to back and FA Cup. That was why Ranieri was sacked and Mourinho hired. It doesn't mean Ranieri wasn't a good Coach or was he not appreciated,Nope ! But these guys are not only professionals but are also shroud business men that don't entertain sentiment or emotion when taking business decisions that'll yield immediate positive results, that's why they're professionals and highly successful..This is all about business and not personal. Sentiment and emotions has no room with professionalism and success. So,for you to involve sentiment and emotion in a purely professional matter is absurd to say the last. Most importantly, there's no problem between Jose Mourinho and Ranieri, no hard feelings at all. Your view is just the figment of your own imagination which you're right to hold but that does not make it to be right. Have a nice day Sir.

I'm an American who fell in love with Chelsea during the years between that FA Cup and The Cup Winners' Cup in 98. Something about a scrappy team fighting for everything they got appealed to me. As of the 98 season, they were "my' club, insomuch as an American has a European club. When Abramovich bought the club I was relieved, and I think he has been a very good owner. I do think there is an ethos of "take the shortcut to get what I want" that crept into the club, most obviously exemplified by Eden Hazard's revolt against Mourinho, but that's a fair price to pay for all the trophies, imo. I would feel less that way if the culture of tough, industrious play were to disappear for longer than it did in Mourinho's last half season, but it thankfully has not. While Abramovich fires managers, he only does it after giving them enough rope to either succeed or fail The one thing in the club culture I find aggravating is the lack of patience with young players. With Mount emerging, the loss of Kevin DeBruyne causes me less pain than it did before, but it's still aggravating, to cite the most obvious example. That 04-05 team was one of the greatest teams I've ever seen. It taught me to appreciate the aesthetics of a well parked, well tuned team bus. I understand the tactics of the game better because of the consistent way that team played, and I'm a more informed football fan because of it. I will always treasure Jose Mourinho for that season.

I'm very much the same as you mate only I'm Australian but I fell in love with Chelsea after the 1997 FA Cup final. Also this video speaks of how we bought such great players as Mutu (6goals in 27) and Veron (1goal in 7) but I don't even recall them playing for the club such was the lack of impact that they made, there should have been more emphasis on the fact that Mourinho did it his way and didn't want players at his club unless he seen a vision for them so a lot of those that Abramovich bought in his first season weren't used like they may have been under Ranieri when we won the title

Well said, Brett. I, too, came to love Chelsea at '96 for the same exact reason: I loved scrappy underdog teams who played in wretched muddy pitches. This was exactly the same reason why I fell in love with Brett Favre's Packers team in the mid-90s as opposed to the Cowboys or Redskins who were dominating that era and were playing in luxury stadia. There's a certain sweet romance about supporting that kind of team that gets even sweeter when they finally dominate the game.

Did Chelsea buy their titles? I agree with the cautious answer in the video, the £132.750 000 spent for new players in the fist two years of Abramovich's reign is a whole lot of money. Still, between 2001 and 2004, Manchester United spent £141.690 000 for just four players (Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Juan Sebastian Veron and Ruud van Nistelrooy - as per Transfermarkt).

@@imnotlazy not Chelsea - Mourinho. Ranieri spent more than Mourinho, the season Arsenal went invincible. The reason Chelsea won was their manager - whether it be man management (ask the players), tactics and formations (4-3-3), or the smart use of money to make accurate signings (cech, drogba and essien spent roughly 10 years at the club). Yes you need money but Ranieri failed after being given a blank cheque. Mou changed the prem meta for years to come. Heck he signed Drogba (an unknown at that time) when Roman offered Ronaldinho. Also kept some of his old players from Porto (Carvalho and Ferreira)

For me as a Chelsea fan, they started their journey in 1970 when they beat Leeds, the then favourites, in the fa cup final. It was a tough affair and established Chelsea’s reputation as a scrappy, tough-to-beat side. This “winning DNA” has remained a feature of our club as the side went from generation to generation, through difficult times and more recently in our glorious, almost two decades under Abramovich. It’s true he gave us the money. But he gave us much more: a peerless management team, making us a international centre of excellence in football club management, and most of all ruthless ambition and a single minded desire to win. I think he not only saw a good opportunity, he also saw something he could personally relate to. An entity full of pride and willingness to do whatever it takes to survive and thrive. However what’s often lost in this story is the way Chelsea looks after its players. I have never heard an ex-player speak badly of the club and the way they were treated. The club does not depend on one irreplaceable figure but is first and foremost a management team capable of winning under different coaches. We are one of the first PL clubs to build this kind of superstructure whose success does not rise and fall with the presence of a single dominant manager. In fact, Chelsea understood the need for a big club to have shared responsibility not just on the field but off the field as well. A structure that does not depend on the performance of one or two highly talented personalities (often accompanied by oversized egos). The spirit of Chelsea was already established before fortune smiled on us with the advent of Roman abramovich. However he had the vision and the wherewithal to transform that potential into a global leader in football. Something very few other clubs have managed to do, all the more impressive given our humble beginnings back at the turn of the millennium.

Thanks a lot for the video! I'm one of those who very much appreciate you showing that the "new era", the transition to a "big club", did not necessarily start only with Roman Abramovich. The the cultural redefinition of the club in the second half of the 1990s has been as much important in the process. The young playing managers, Ruud Gullit's dreadlocks, the humble elegance of Gianfranco Zola and the flamboyant Italian element in general, the calm class of Marcel Desailly and Graeme Le Saux, etc. This all highlighted the ambition to make the final step from local provincialism of 'Headhunters' to a new cosmopolitan identity and brand (finally catching up with the aristocratic-bohemian fleur of King's Road, pretentious as it may be). It might not have been the main reason why Roman bought the club in 2003. But without all the iconic aura it would certainly have been more difficult for him to fall in love with the club as deep as he apparently has.

I went to England around the same time that Mourinho and CR7 also did and I have to say that Chelsea made us very proud and then it was CR7 time to do it. Unfortunately it seems that Mourinho lost a bit of his shine...

I don't think he has lost his shine. People simply expect far too much from him given everything he's achieved. Also, Mourinho is an extremely professional coach, who doesn't tolerate a lack of professionalism from others. And unfortunately not everyone is ready to take that, especially the players.

@@michaelwe5884 not at all, but I do know that Mourinho is found out and is no more relevant. He got fired from a second tier club (Tottenham) because of lack of results. I started following them a little in 2002/03 season but became a true fan of the team 03/04 season. I also became a bigger fan of soccer that year watching Arsenal going unbeaten in Premiere League. I became big fan of Dennis Bergkamp but still celebrated the fact Chelsea was the team to end their domination by beating them in Champions League quarterfinals only to lose to Monaco in semis and first here about our future coach Jose as he won the Champions league that year and a new era was truly started.

Not a Chelsea fan, but I disagree they bought the title - Money was obviously a factor as they used it to rapidly assemble a title winning squad, but that's a wild over-simplification, because it's been shown spending does not reliably produce results at all. Making it work was no mean feat at all! It wasn't so much bought as it was won by a risky investment that came off. Would however state that that this specific bout of spending was truly AWFUL for the wider footballing world, as it drastically over-inflated the market value of players, which has made the risk-taking required by professional clubs to just be unsustainably crazy. Then other clubs/owners saw it work and compounded the problem.
