But they did.
In probably the most surprising season in English Premier League history, Leicester City won it all.
To say these lost were underdogs would be a massive understatement. So let's find out how it all came about. Right from the beginning.

The 2010s had quite a number of incredible underdog stories. Swansea winning the League Cup in 12/13. Bradford remarkably, were the runners up in that final. Wigan winning the FA Cup vs Man City that same season. Obviously Leicester with the league in 15/16

Fun fact: Vichai was a huge Chelsea fan going to matches in the VIP box every time he had the chance. One game at Stamford Bridge, his family had entered the VIP section but Vichai was stopped by security whom almost hit him with a metal detector. Vichai was furious since the security refused to apologise. He then said to Aiyawat, his son, that he was going to buy another English club so that he can beat Chelsea one day. The rest is history.

For me the most underappreciated factor in Leicester’s title-winning season was their “throwback” style of tactics, reverting to moving the ball forward exceptionally quickly, forgetting about maintaining possession and moving back to 4-4-2. You need to remember that back in 2015, 4-4-2 was almost seen as totally and utterly dead and redundant. Not only did no-one really play it any longer, no-one really prepared for it either. The prevailing wisdom was twofold: 1) That the modern 4-3-3 was just *better* than 4-4-2; the reason being that a strong and powerful centre-forward could occupy both opposing central-defenders and thereby giving the central-midfield 3 an overload against the opponents 2. 2) Possession is, was and forever will be King. Maintaining possession of the ball was everything; attacking and defending was defined by who had the ball, and territory meant nothing. Ranieri’s Leicester team completely flew in the face of all of this; and for those of you reading this who might be a bit too young to remember this in any detail, it really was something that opposing teams just simply *did not know* how to deal with. They didn’t know how to deal with a team who stood off you and just *didn’t care* about not being in possession. They didn’t know how to deal with the speed of the counter-attacks or how quick Leicester were to go back-to-front. They didn’t know how to deal with the opposing centre-forward being a player with electric pace from the central position rather than the wings. You have to give tremendous credit to Ranieri. I’d even say his success with Leicester has had an element of influence on further success including what Klopp has had with Liverpool.

that might be true for some teams but for the most part your narrative does not make sense given the big 6 scored a pretty low no. of points in an EPL season. none of them even went above 80 points that season when on average the winners score 85 points in EPL. ofc leicester were amazing and took the opportunities they got well, on paper they were good but not that strong and the teams cannot handle 442 is not really convincing argument

I was visiting my uncle around Christmas in 2015. I live in Germany and was 14 at the time. I always loved football but only ever watched the Bundesliga and the Champions League. My Uncle, a long time Chelsea fan, took me and my dad to a game against Leicester. I knew nothing about Leicester, but I cheared for them as a joke at first to get a reaction out of my uncle. But... when the game started and I saw this incredible team fight with everything they had, as if loosing would literally kill them, I fell in love. The Football, the passion, the athmosphere in their stadium... It was beautyfull. I followed the rest of the season and have been following/supporting Leicester City ever since even though I live in Germany. This Club is so special to me and I am extremely lucky to have whitnessed this miracle of a season thanks to what was largely a coincidence. I'll never forget that 2:1 result against Chelsea in my life. I'll never forget Jamie Vardys Celebration after scoring. This is a core memory for me.

I had a season ticket at Leicester since 2002 - it’s comments like this that make being a Leicester fan so surreal. It’s amazing that our underdog story has had such an impact! After going from crying after relegation to League 1 in 2008, the elation to despair of THAT Deeney goal vs Watford in 2013, to watching an unfashionable club lift the Premier League, reach the Champions League quarter final, lift the FA Cup….even playing at Wembley would have been amazing by itself not long ago! I wouldn’t change our rollercoaster journey for anything, the highs, the lows; the hopes, the heartache. It’s what being a real football fan is all about. Glad you’re a fox and I hope you’ll be able to come to another game soon! 🦊

In 2015, disaster struck the region where the team is based, a big flood happened, but as Leicester, they just fought to it and won their first and only championship, and in an incredible final matchday, nobody expected them to win, they didn't even have preparations for them to lift the trophy The story can be seen in a mini documentary called "El Milagro de Cobresal"

In Germany Kaiserslautern won the league in 1998, beatling with Bayern Munich, after Promotion with coaching legend Otto Rehhagel, who had actually just been fired by Bayern in 1996 after a terribly controversial season, the same season Kaiserslautern had been relegated. So, he had been fired by Bayern in 1996, made the odd move of going to relegated second league club Kaiserslautern instead, won promotion with them in 1997 and won the Championship against Bayern in 1998. He stayed there until 2002 I think and sometimes played the Champions League, before he was fired and, instead of ending his career, made another odd move, one that noone in Germany could understand, I mean that Greek move...

17:22 I believe you missed a quite "obvious" one here. Fuchs is Austrian so his name is German, and in German "Fuchs" actually means "fox", which is, of course, absolutely perfect considering the team he was playing for! Regarding "an off-year" - this is, maybe on purpose, misinterpreted by you. The big clubs had an off-year, all of them, which is very rare and which is why we don't see this kind of stuff happening a lot. But of course even when the big clubs have an off-year some club must have a very good year to actually be able to capitalize on it, which Leicester did in amazing fashion. btw, it would have been good to also talk about their CL campaign in the following season, which was quite good as well.
@SuperNeilAdams
@SuperNeilAdams Жыл бұрын
"The big clubs had an off-year, all of them". This is a popular line regarding that season, yet you have to remember Leicester only lost 3 matches in 15/16. If it's fair to put their success down to other teams underperforming then you have to wonder why that line was never invoked for previous 'big team' champions with less impressive numbers. It just comes across like football snobbery to me.

I've been following this channel for some time, and I am so glad you finally made a video about Leicester! The ultimate underdogs, a team made of rejects and failures, with a coach who was just sacked from Greece National Team after 4 matches. Over 8 months, I was amazed as Vardy banged in goals and Kante literally ran the opponent to death. Everyone on that team was a key figure. Kasper the reliable goalie, Houth and Morgan at the back, Kante and Drinkwater controlled the mid while Mahrez and his smooth touches gave the ball to Vardy and he did the rest. Okazaki, Ulloa, King, Albrighton, Schlupp, I could go on and on. But the most surprising thing is, they didn't just drop off after one season. They reached the UCL quarter finals tye very next season, won the FA cup last year, and reached UECL semis this year. Leicester is probably the best run club in EPL right now, and hopefully will challenge the big boys week in week out very soon. Love from probably the only fox from Dhaka, Bangladesh.❤️

May I tell you something funny? Borussia Dortmund started the second part of the 2014/15 season at the bottom of the table and in the end they reached the 7th place and qualified for the EL qualification round. I guess, that would be a greater achievement then only avoiding relegation. 😅 Btw, even though that was a Bundesliga record for a bottom placed team - although the 7th place actually only leveled a decades old previous record - that season, and to be precise a completely chanceless 1-3 loss against Gladbach after a long winning streak and chase for a better place, was the explicit reason why Klopp announced his retirement from Dortmund because he thought that they needed a change, even though the club bagged for him to reverse his choice (I think he had a contract planned to go until 2021 back then). In the end, his retirement propably helped as the team played better than ever in that season and finally secured the 7th place, but I'm leaving the point of the original story... They went from 18th to 7th in half a season.

I moved to Leicester around 2013 and immediately started following the Foxes in the Championship though I wasn't massively into football, but i went to Esteban Cambiasso's last game. The title winning season can only really be described from my perspective with cliches and obvious statements - it was a fairytale, it was the happiest i've ever been in my life. Quite significantly before the title win we also dug up King Richard, a huge cultural moment for the city. It felt like a bang average city suddenly came alive all around me. Nothing warms my heart more than seeing other fans showing their love for my club. Thank you so much for this amazing video!

This is a fabulous recap! Came across it alongside a highlight clip of Vardy scoring against Preston... I'm not a football fan as such, but this season and Leicester certainly caught my attention; I was hooked. It was really good to see the game being played as it was meant to be played - fast, hard, attacking, no messing about and full of self belief and a strong intent to win every single time. You can't be a team sports fan and not be super-impressed and thoroughly entertained at how they went about that entire competition. The fact that they won it was, well, the cherry on the icing on the cake. The other part of it for me was finding out how the club owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha went about his business as owner. His positive approach to ownership and the bond he created between himself, the club and community (not just the fan base) was thoroughly enchanting. It made the whole incredible sporting adventure on the pitch a shared experience, the ultimate group-mind trip. This was not a £billion side mechanistically winning, counting the gate receipts, ad revenue and TV money and restocking the club memorabilia and trinkets shop. This was all about people; *all* the people. Quite a guy. I've rarely been so upset as when I saw the news of his death on the 27/10/2018. And Ranieri; he helped achieve the impossible result. Never has such an investment in pizza paid such dividends. His career has had ups and downs, but of all team sports managers in (probably) all of human history, he is the only one who can pull out the memories quite like that, chuckle, and tuck them away again. I hope the portrait of him and the team and others on the wall in Leicester is still there and remains.

Slight correction: the FA Cup triumph was in 2021 Before I discovered Leicester in 2016, all the talk in primary school at the time was around the so called 'big clubs'- Man Utd, Chelsea and the like. I wasn't interested in football back then, until I saw Leicester's title winning game. I was inspired by the fact that a previously unknown club could achieve the unexpected not with huge profits and big signings, but by teamwork, passion and integrity. From then on, I knew Leicester City was for me. *It has been over 6 years since I made that decision, we have had triumphs and setbacks, seen many greats leave and new talent emerge, and witnessed managers being sacked after shock defeats, but I have never come to regret my decision to be different from the crowd and support grit rather than solely talent*

This team was insane. Nobody saw this coming. I also think the upheaval at Man City allowed Leicester to consolidate a proper start to the season. Their confidence and trust in Ranieri clearly showed. But like all clubs that win things, the squad wanted more pay and Ranieri lost the dressing room. But still, legendary run from this team in the 2015/16 season.

Jamie vardy is genuinely a world class player, his passion, his passing, finishing and his entire attitude embodies a professional athlete dedicated to his team. Severely underrated in the prem, he was out for what 6/8 weeks this season gone and comes back, scores a goal, had another minor break comes back and continuously scores till the end of the season. King.

I think us Leicester fans take Vardy for granted sometimes, we absolutely love his talents and antics at the away end. I'm saying this because when he was injured for long periods of last season, we did suffer and that's not because we are a one man team, but he does contribute to a major part of our success. I don't see Vardy retiring soon, but even if he does, we are seeing the emergence of new talent such as Maddison and Dewsbury-Hall who are inspired by Jamie Vardy

His passing? I’m a Leicester fan and I’ve got to say, his passing and first touch do let him down quite a bit every now and then. His finishing and passion is what makes him a great player, I wouldn’t say world class though but do love him 🦊

I remember watching the Chelsea match live. As a Liverpool fan, we had a miserable year. I didn't adopt Leicester but I did hope they edged it out just because of their underdog status. What a season it was and match of the day brought with it a more excited Lineker than we had ever seen, even though he tried hiding it on the episode on which they won it. What a refreshing season too. Spurs and Arsenal challenging for the title, two rivals with Arsenal having a fun squad with great talent and spurs who were trying to make a name for themselves after an impressive 14/15 season with Harry Kane and Son's emergence. All of us were behind Leicester and of Course Ranieri!

And now they've been relegated and have lost almost all their best players... How did they get relegated with the squad they had last year? Vardy is still there though... As for their Premier League title, what a season that was for them. But it is true that usual contenders were having difficulties : Manchester CIty had finished the first phase of their rise to the top and were looking for a new breathe. Manchester United were just 2 years after the end of a very long success period and were (and still are) searching for a new beginning. Liverpool had Klopp just arrive but he hadn't started building his own team yet. Chelsea was doing up and down from one year to the other (they won in 2015 and 2017 after all) Arsenal were still good but extraordinary and looked really "average" Tottenham were on the rise, and they really had their best shot that year and the one after, but they were not at their peak yet. But of course, Leicester did fantastic, and after a miracle to not be relegated, that makes it even more surprising. However, there's a save from relegation that happens in 2015-2016 that is even more crazy than Leicester in 2014-2015. That year in Ligue 1, Toulouse was 19th at day 28, 10 points from the 17th place. Look it up, it was crazy. They completely transformed after the new manager arrived.
