Ngl more than kpop, kdrama and the hallyu stuff the way Korea was able to build its economy to such heights in such a short period of time still amazes me.

Yes pretty much in 1 generation. In the 50s Compassion International started in Korea after the war. So poor that even countries like Cambodia and African countries sent aid. My Dad was too poor and only finished 6th Grade and started working by age 11 getting $3 for working 1 month at a restaurant and sleeping for free at the restaurant on the floor. By the 80s it was already getting modernized but still remember having bathrooms outside the house and in the countryside it was still a hole in the ground. By 1988, modernized enough to host Summer Olympics... thats amazing. Imagine a poor African country hosting the Olympics. My Dad went from working at the age of 11 for $3/ month to immigrating to US in 1984 and I went to UCLA graduated with Honors, on scholarship. Success story of working hard and seizing opportunities and studying hard.

So poor, in the 50s they made clothes out of the bags from the flour that was donated as foreign aid.... to this day my Dad doesn't like noodles because that's all they ate... things made of flour from the foreign aid. My parents literally walked 2 hours to go to school over hills, there weren't good roads and at night there were still tigers around in the country side.

Exactly!! And when kpop stans reduce S. Korea to just kpop and kdramas, it makes me really sad. There is so much more S. Korea offers than just kpop or kdramas.

Honestly when I discovered this channel, at first I thought it‘s just a random other low quality channel that talks about kpop, but with every single video I watched this impression completely switched to the opposite. This Video is a peak in your awesome content now. So thank you for all your hard work! Nice greetings from Germany!

South Korea just piggybacked China's rise. That's why it's rich! The data says that without china, it would not even be medium wealth country until this year and not rich for another 25 or even 45 years!

It was informative but it got the economic history wrong. South Korea wasn't really becoming rich like at all, it was rising really slowly. Why is it rich now and so fast!? Easy! South Korea is rich because China rose and South Korea just piggybacked China!

OK, so I totally love the new voice and of course another informational video (those are my favourites). If I wanted to point something out I would say/write that the voiceover was a little bit too low (I mean, maybe it was my computer, then I'm sorry, but I think that tone of the voice should start sentences just a little bit higher so that the end of those sentences were audible more. Now I feel like the voice at the end of sentences tends to dissapear). But for real, I LOVE the new teammate!

I like you guys anyway; that Yeonjun meme is just clickbait. Hiiiii, Tammy! Enjoyed the brief history lesson. The ramp-up from the 60s, 80s to current times seems overwhelming for modern Korean society - that's a small timeframe for all that happened. In context, Korea has a civilization and dynasties that go back millennia. It seems like a compression upon the mindset, all that's happened in a relatively short span of time compared to what's happened throughout the centuries. Perhaps that pressure contributes to how the younger generation sees itself and how they'll decide to live (or not!) going forward. Compared to America, our country is relatively young and we've imploded in so many different ways (from within and without). Context is also different in both countries - one obvious difference David touched upon in an aftershow talk (feminism). I hope you continue to contribute to DKDKTV - your post was informative!
