Seo Taiji himself said to BTS "This is your generation" Kind of passed the crown to BTS in way back in 2017...... A legend only can know a legend.....

I want to add some more what Seo Taiji did for the Korean music industry. At that time, the whole music industry was corrupt. No matter how many albums were sold out, no reward sent to the musicians. The Establishment like record companies said "You guys became famous thanks to us. So, earn your money in nightclubs". No single artist couldn't fight against them because the Establishment consists of entertainment companies, record companies, broadcasting companies, and so on. The pre-censorship institution was one of them. Also, the artists were the slaves of the broadcasting companies. When they asked the artists to appear on the TV, they had to no matter what. If the artist refused, they can't be on the TV forever. In this situation, Seo Taiji stood against them. He canceled a contract with his company and continued his career by his own way without any help of a company. He did every step to create an album almost by himself ranging from engineering and playing instruments of the sounds to composing and producing the whole album. As a result, he became the enemy of the Establishment and they attacked Seo Taiji so terribly. The press spread vicious rumors like "He is Satan. He is a girl. He is pregnant??". Yes, although he is a male, they made a rumor that he himself was pregnant. The broadcasting companies prohibited SeoTaiji and boys from the TV and radio. Even the congress claimed that he needs to be stopped. Pre-censorship was just one of those attacks. Literally, the whole music industry tried to kill him. In this situation, Seo Taiji won over all the fights thanks to the support of his fans and gave all the rights of musicians to the current musicians. The reason I like him personally is because he never boasts these amazing achievements. For this reason, even many Koreans don't know what he did for the Korean music industry.

As the original SeoTaiji's fan, I remember how excited the era was. EVERY SINGLE TEENS were fans of him. Boys, girls.. didn't matter. I remember "Hayeo-ga" having Korean traditional instruments and made me feel so proud. I remember singing "Classroon Ide-a" banging my head. I remember how shocking it was when he decided to retire all of the sudden. He DID invented K-pop and introduced me to rock music. After him, I completely lost the interest to other K-pop cuz it became too bubble-pop. ...Until I found BangTan Boys..LOL

I remember watching a video of BTS saying how happy and honored they were to perform with Seo Taiji and I was so confused why I thought he was just a normal person but now I know

If in future there are any courses on Kpop in schools these videos should be made textbooks.

It’s safe to say that Seo Taiji paved the way for Kpop as a whole. Edit so people don’t fight in the comments: Seo Taiji paved the way for Kpop in Korea (without him it wouldn’t exist) ;BTS and PSY paved it in the rest of the world (without them, the majority wouldn’t have known about Kpop)

when i was in teens, i saw their first performance on music program in my life, i felt like being hit by the lightening. most of my friends are memorizing all the verses and following their styles and dances as armies love bts these days. before them, teens are just passive beings to follow the adults' order without resistance. but after we listened to their songs, we realized teens have the right and the freedom to speak up their voices against adults. seotaeji was our president of teens who represented our values and voices. his music style was also the door to open the new genre of music. most of all, his message was so explicit and democratic!! i think he was a cultural protester who led to enhance korea's democracy!

Love it when you guys do shows like this. Provides a lot of context for us westerners who aren’t familiar with the history and cultural reception of the day.

Seo Taiji is really special because he is not just special in terms of music, but he has completely changed the Korean music industry. The concept of comeback comes from Seo Taiji. Before there was a concept of comeback, the singer didn't have any special authority, but Seo Taiji didn't want to do it. He wanted a cycle of making songs with plenty of rest, working for some time, relaxing and making songs. That's why I did it, but it was possible because it was Seo Tai-ji, and after that, everyone followed suit and became a culture.

Thank you Danny for this great video. You really put a lot of effort into these types of videos. And wow korean kpop or the whole music industry can be proud that they have someone as revolutionary as seo taiji.

Personally I heard about Seo taji when he invited bts to his concert and named them his successor. After checking out his discography even if It is decades late I am a fan of his music. No doubt Seo taji and boys are the inventor of Kpop

BTS certainly broke down many barriers and took KPop to a new level but so many artists paved the way for that and arguably Seo Taiji was the first one 🙌💯

I’ve been listening to Seo Taiji for more than two decades here in America. Had to rip his music online because nobody knew who he was and nobody carried his albums. He’s one of my main influences in my own music.

Seo Taiji is legendary in Kpop history. The way BTS see him, you can tell how much he changed their lives to better. They are really proud when they were invited on his 25th anniversary concert and wish to have the same achievements as with Seo Taiji. They look up so much with their seniors like him. Very impressive.

Seo Taiji doesn't seem to age and his music is timeless.

This is a rather excellent good introduction of K pop history. It's also important to note that he made K rock what it is today, niche, but thriving in Korea.

I can guarantee, I would have been a hardcore fan of Seo Taiji if i was born in that era just like I'm a passionate fan of BTS right now. Seeing Seo Taiji and BTS crossover with the remake 'come back home' made me realise how similar both of these artists of diff generation are interms of musical ideas and messages through their songs.

I've always had a fascination for foreign cultures and their history, but getting into kpop has widened my horizons yet again. With your help, I can understand so many more things now :) I'm a high school senior and I chose to write my language diploma research paper on the rise of kpop, tackling different aspects of it, like reasons, struggles of the artist, production and lastly outcome and success.
