I had a Far Eastern History class in college and one thing I remember is that Japanese culture was based on admiration of beauty. Chinese based more on "goodness" both revered duty but especially Japanese honored the code of obedience to the social structure and superiors.

It wasn't crossing a line into the room, it was the offense of disobedience and daring to bring attention to his master being insulted, which Toranaga was playing off.

Haven't started this one yet .... you beat me to it! The book was HUGE in the '70s, and I watched the series in the '80s but never since.

I remember the old version of Shogun and i like this new series. Still a little hard to keep up with the subtitles but i get whats happening! The cinematography is awesome and the actors are great! Looking forward to continuing to watch the rest of the series wih you! Domo Arigato for sharing Emma ❤️💛

I watched the first miniseries and I loved it. I did learn some Japanese words and wondered how accurate the story was.

This is my favorite novel, I must have read it over 100 times. I have seen the original miniseries from the 80's multiple times. I own it in a special VHS version, in DVD format, and digitally. And yes, there are a lot of cultural and lingual flaws in both. This did correct the majority of those, but the story itself is so different from the novel and original miniseries that I absolutely HATE it. I refuse to watch it again, but I will definitely keep up with your reactions. The costumes are amazing, the sets are terrific, and the acting is very VERY good. I just can't forgive it for ruining one of the greatest novels ever.

It’s about the lead up to the Sekigahara campaign which established the Tokugawa shogunate. Or at least a fictionalised version that takes a lot of historical liberties. But it’s a good story.
