12 months since I started as a self employed courier initially on just the Courier Exchange and now usually off it.
How did it go?
A brief summary

Fair Comments. I did 2 years on the CX through lockdown and I got 6 months free on Black friday. At that time Diesel was around 97p per Litre. When fuel prices increased the price per mile stayed the same. I got totally disheartened with the way things where heading and didnt renew my 3rd years subscription. I dont know how true it is but Ive heard stories of certain people taking 1 subscription out and then sharing it with 2 or 3 friends, not having the correct insurance or GIT. I totally agree the CX needs to look at a minimum PPM for each class of van.

Nice one Anvil Dave! A very balanced and candid look back on the year that was. You have had a decent turnover and made a profit in your first year and that’s no mean feat. Wishing you continued success with Anvil Logistics, thank you for sharing your journey over the last year.👍

Afternoon Dave. That was an awesome 👏🏻 truly honest chat about the CX on being a self employed courier driver. There’s not many people who’ll open up like you’ve done. Top guy 🤩 And too top it off City got the treble 🏆 Things must be getting difficult as Tufnell’s has gone bust and there’s a depot near you in Royton next to Red rose garage and used to park my truck there when we live in Royton lol 😆 Mazzo’s is booked for July the 15th woohoo 🙌 As with any vehicle service it regularly and it should do you well 👍🏻 love your chats keep safe buddy until the next update 👍🏻

Thank you so much for making this video. It’s really helpful to get a good idea on what CX is useful for and anybody starting out on it and the path they should look to take once they get started. In my opinion, CX should limit the number of drivers that can be on the platform in an area so that it doesn’t kill the market. At the moment they have fresh supply of drivers joining but eventually they will run out and end up with a bad reputation.

Brilliant video Dave. Totally engaging. Like you, I have my regulars that phone me day in day out with work. I remember another courier saying I was lucky to have that. I said, no it was my hard work not luck going knocking on doors early in the morning and drumming up work (rather than sit at home waiting for work to come to me, which is a problem with a lot of couriers thinking the CX is a career), then doing the best job i could for them and building up that trust. Due to this, I have honeslty only took 2 jobs since Jan from other companies on the CX but will probably still renew as an insurance policy. Great to see you turning a profit and business is looking good Dave, and I think a lot of people will find useful information from this vid. Cheers :)

Great story.. Listening to your varied Information/ financial costings. Just did a quick 12 month I won't mention my cash flow. Its beyond crap. I was pretty much dead for last 12 months, But I am happy to say I paid off my 5 year finance on my van. Just in the last few weeks I had my van serviced £235 Before that I had two new front tyres £219 And my van starting up was poor I changed this small unit on the steering £26. But then went onto changing the starter motor WOW what a difference that made. Its fair to say my van in 5 years has barely done 42.000 and 50% of that mileage was personal use and dead mileage. I basically have estate car doing my preffered jobs as and when I am able to help. Going forward in my conversation and including what you say in your video your right we are always learning. Personally I do my part as a hobby too ill to actually work. Basically bid on say 10 JOBS a week via my preffered platform,I also have my own website which I had two enquires in 3 years and niether job worked. Found Market Place "man and Van more inviting with zero over heads, only thing is placing adverts across your prefered areas where I am likely to travel.. I had a few regular customers on start up but slowly I faded them out over there low priced quotes,im no ones cheap delivery service.. although 90% of the jobs ive ever done happens to be.. 100% agree CX is not worth joining,I was a taxi driver back in my party years 23-33yrs and our regular subs was £65 quid every Tuesday. It made no odds if we took 1 job off the radio or computerised system they got rich not the driver.. My costing there was very simple £100 a week for car rental £5200 per year (i drove a £1200 pound Ford Cortina 2.0 GL Radio rent was £65 year £3.380 fuel on top £££. Make a living wage after those figures.. Love to tie up the lose ends in my life or push for Positive start..

To be honest with you, Louisa, the cx from the beginning of the year has been very poor for work. When I joined in July last year, there was plenty of work and I got my subscription back within 3 weeks and I wasn't really trying. Nowadays, the rates are so low that I struggle to work on a daily basis .

@@iancoyne3835 Ok I am hearing you. The van arrives in a week it is only a small van. I do plan on doing a leaflet drop in my area (Dorset). And signing up to Amazon Flex as a backup. Ideally, I want longer runs, the attraction of becoming a courier was to take me away from home now my child can take care of himself. I do have my reservations about the CX from what I have learned here on youtube. Any ideas I am all ear's I am not wearing rose tinted glasses and thinking it's all going to be easy.

I’ve been working on CX for tree months and I don’t know how people make a living doing less than 80p a mile, I have XLWB 4m and I can’t do jobs less than £1 per mile and some companies they like to waste your time by keep you waiting to unload in which you got to get out on the road has quick as possible if you want make a decent amount of money on CX. Many people don’t know that after 5pm CX just dies down and if you end up in the bad location after 5pm then is more likely you have to drive home empty which will hurt you profits.

I worry that you have allowed yourself to have one customer giving you 95% of your work. I understand the attraction - you obviously have a good relationship with the company on good money. Please DO NOT do this however tempting it is. I had a business that I was relying on for about 80% of my business for years and then the company was bought out and that was it. Pretty much overnight. That loss made it a very miserable 18 months as I struggled to find alternative work. What would happen if they stopped giving you the work ? How long would it take you to replace that loss ? If you can just have them giving you perhaps 40% - 50%, no more. This type of arrangement has been the killing blow for many small businesses who rely one major source of income. On another note did you factor in van value depreciation ? I don't recall you mentioning it.

Stating the obvious but it's all down to the individual person how much effort and time they want to put in building a business,if someone only ever has the ambition to be a one van outfit then you're not going to make a average wage) great living. I know at least a handful of independent couriers that have started either as motorcycle couriers or with just one vehicle and he built multi-million pounds businesses.
