We can now easily determine an accurate level reference with a laser level, which is a useful tool for carpenters. It is commonplace nowadays, but I think it is amazing that people in the past used their wits to construct buildings. Survey techniques were also used during the construction of the pyramids. It must have been challenging.

Ancient Egyptian level was a right angled A frame with a weight hanging from the top by a string, center and probably degree reference marks along the horizontal. String used to indicate. Stone age simple, probably remarkably accurate if well made because geometry and gravity don't lie.

I was taught how to use a water level during my apprenticeship as well as the level which we called a "transit" or "builders' level". I love seeing the tried and true tools being demonstrated, thank You

I love your videos. You provide a lot of perspective when it comes to fine framing and trim work. I started using some of your joinery techniques with my jobs. Thank you and please keep putting more videos out.

Years ago I installed large factory and loading dock doors. We used a water level filled with windshield washer fluid to establish level at the top of the door. Any out of level at the floor was corrected by adjusting the seal on the bottom of the door.

We used a similar device but on both ends was a board painted white with black lines on it you level was when you had both lines marked with water a pain but it worked. Was used to make sure the ships keels were level plus other applications. 😀👍

Thank you. Excellent information. I want to try a water level with a reservoir can as you have shown. The water level I have just uses a water filled tube and says it is accurate only to 1/4 of an inch in 16 feet of tubing.
@johnsrabe
@johnsrabe 2 жыл бұрын
That sounds dubious to me. Why would it be inaccurate? Anyone know more?
@robertbamford8266

@@johnsrabe It actually surprised me when I read the fine print. I was hoping it was just a CYA statement, but it proved to be true - took a long time to settle and produced unsatisfactory, inconsistent results (air purged, but operator impatience, error?). I like the possibility of a heavy, stable reservoir to produce a fixed level line as a reference.

@@robertbamford8266 Hunh! Thanks for the response. That’s disappointing. Luckily I have a crappy crooked old house in which things need to look level, not be level. ;-)
