I knew about the Paget's. I heard that the hat was first used in a London play. Check into that.

I am curious about the brim on these hats. I am a huge fan of the soft brim, and surely someone must sell the deerstalker with a soft double-brim. Does yours have a soft brim? Please help!

I have to disagree with it not being reference in Doyle's Writings. In Silver Blaze, Doyle writes: "…the corner of a first-class carriage flying along en route for Exeter, while Sherlock Holmes, with his sharp, eager face framed in his ear-flapped travelling-cap, dipped rapidly in to the bundle of fresh papers which he had secured at Paddington… ". I think an ear-flapped cap describes a deerstalker.

Don’t forget about the plays put on by Gillette. This was the first time people actually saw Holmes in the hat and quite regularly.

Yeah, OUR ideas of Holmes using the Inverness coat and Deerstalker hat becomes iconic from those Ridiculous Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes hollywood movies....
