Chronicle - Medieval History Documentaries

2 жыл бұрын

In this fourth and final episode, we take a look at the demise of the Holy Inquisition that wreaked terror over Europe for centuries. When a Jewish boy is kidnapped by the Vatican, he becomes a symbol for an embattled pope. The boy's father and the Emperor unleash the forces that bring about the end of the Inquisition.
Based on previously unreleased secret documents from European Archives including the Vatican, Secret Files of the Inquisition unveils the incredible true story of the Catholic Church's 500-year struggle to remain the world's only true Christian religion. It traces Catholicism's determination to maintain power at any cost in medieval France, 15th century Spain, Renaissance Italy and even into the 19th century. Historians, experts and Church authorities advise on the handling of this controversial subject matter.

I was just watching something on Napoleon and wondering why, despite the hundreds of thousands killed in his conquests, people loved him so much. This revelation may help to explain that.

Says a religious person. Religion is organised and man-made and if people are that stupid, that gullible, that desperate to be lead like sheep (they even call themselves a flock) then I pity them. Organised religion is terrible - I am so sad you feel it could possibly be a good thing. Self discovery and research into history, spiritualism and philosophy is key… but most people are stupid, and that’s why religions are so popular.

You're correct! The Holy Roman Inquisition never ended. It expanded beyond all recognition. It's so big now nobody recognizes it for what it is. Now the Holy Roman Inquisition is called "World Wars". Now instead of mere cities and towns being decimated, whole nations are destroyed. Instead of burning the "heretics" one by one, they fire bomb their cities just like Protestant Dresden. Heretical nations can now be incinerated with nukes. I know you must think I'm daff, but, it's the TRUTH. The Vatican does indeed use "discretion" these days. And it DOES continue the "work". And she does it with the cooperation of the "kings of the earth". Read your Bible.

Removing the first word of the title would change its meaning: the question would take a "how" and make it a "what." That new slant in the description of the documentary would alter the approach to the contents of the documentary but, since the documentary itself is not changed, neither is its degree of accuracy.

As a convert to the Catholic Church this part of church history is especially troubling. I find myself wondering how and when did the Church and its leaders wander so far from the teachings of Jesus? Surely the first century church understood that the kingdom Christ came to establish was not one of armies, kings, heirarchies, wealth, and tyranny. They went from persecution to being the persecutors...it is a grave stain on the Church. And now we have a pope and corrupted "princes" throwing the Scriptures to the wind, endorsing all manner of sin and evil. It's very disturbing.

Unfortunately no religion is perfect and there are issues in all of them with some dark history. I think the church did a lot of damage there is no doubt but the reason they are so much in the media is because they are the largest christian denomination so a lot of what was done in hits history comes to the forefront. The church of today besides the scandals is vastly different now.

God said, "Come out of her, my people, that you partake not of her sins and receive not also of her plagues; for her sins have reached unto heaven and God hath remembered her iniquities." I'm praying that you come out of the Roman church and convert to Christ. Abandon the Roman Antichrist before it's too late.

The perfect documentary to describe the arrogance of Christianity in all forms. From popes to Christians arriving in America, that arrogance led to more death, sorrow and bloodshed than most any other religion can claim. Native Americans can attest to the cruelty. In South America they wiped out entire cultures. In numerous countries and continents far too many died horrible deaths in the name of God. It's why here in the US Christian nationalism is the most dangerous enemy of democracy. That very same arrogance leads those same fanatics to believe that only their God, only their beliefs, and only their interpretation of the God is worthy to rule this country. Even Christians who are not fanatical can see if they honestly look that most important thing any country can do is enforce and keep the separation of church and state.

"that arrogance led to more death, sorrow and bloodshed than most any other religion can claim" Prove it. "In South America they wiped out entire cultures" Prove that it was their intention and not simply ignorance about how diseases work. " In numerous countries and continents far too many died horrible deaths in the name of God" How many? Since you're an empiricist i want empirical statistics dude. "It's why here in the US Christian nationalism is the most dangerous enemy of democracy" You do realize that USA is protestant therefore it has nothing to do with this video about Catholicism? "Even Christians who are not fanatical can see if they honestly look that most important thing any country can do is enforce and keep the separation of church and state." Elaborate why this is the case.

I agree with you, completely, but let's look at the reasoning (albeit twisted, pseudo "logic") behind this behavior. What we know of religion, any religion, in any culture, anywhere in the world, at anytime in history, is transmitted from one human to another (yes, there are abundant claims of divine interaction, of " holy" visions), and the human mind is such that it craves validation, and thus the illusion that the more people who believe exactly as we do, the greater the chance that we are "right" (be it religion, politics, even favorite flavor of ice cream). To think differently is anathema. When a religion becomes formalized (with doctrine, priests, etc), then the real problems begin. While religion gives the comfort of "explaining" all the big questions humans have, it is, in the end, speculation. Christianity, especially Catholicism (and numerous independent "churches") stress, not logic, but faith, which is the religious equivalent of, sadly, usually a version of the shell game. Of course, this no more, and no less, than what I believe. Whether I am right, or wrong, well, who knows?

laserbeam 002 -- I wholeheartedly agree with you. Nobody should EVER have the right to push their beliefs down anyone's throat, because it defeats the purpose. Throughout the thousands of years, emperors, kings, and queens have done just that -- pushed what they believe down the throats of their citizens. IF they hadn't, I don't believe that there would've been that many wars. The majority of wars happened under the guise of religion, and I don't think that God had that in mind. Just look at the Islamic terrorists; if people don't believe in Allah, then they are killed. The Spanish Inquisition that killed thousands. I think that you know that wars happened due to religious zealots. Stay safe, take care, and have a great rest of the week.

@@lucascesar029 Well to start with I said I don't care how anyone worships. And I think I do understand why the did it...Religious ferver, political power...etc. And yes I would shove my beliefs down their throats because my belief is we should respect everyone's religious belief as long as they don't use it to bully, intimidate, start wars or kill anyone over it.

@@laserbeam002 If you would shove your beliefs down other people throats then you're incoherent from abhoring the idea of people shoving their beliefs down other people throats, which was the only point you made in your original comment. You should logically aknowledge that it is necessary to shove beliefs down other people throats, and what actually matters is what those beliefs are. You made no comment on the religious beliefs itself, therefore your original comment is quite worthless.

For centuries mainly catholic have lacked so much knowledge of the word of God. When I think of the time from King Henry the 8th his daughter Queen Elizabeth burning Protestants who did not want to convert to Catholicism and if I'm correct yes even Protestants who would burn Catholics for not wanting to convert also. And I think this dates back to many more centuries if only they would have known the scriptures. (Reference #1. Moses giving the children of Israel and ultimatum telling them to choose who they will serve whether it be the gods of Egypt or the one true God in heaven he tells them to choose life with God or death with false gods but it was still giving them the choice. ) Reference #2. Joshua telling them also to choose and then he tells them as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.) Reference #3. I have learned from the Bible that God does not want anybody to come to him by force God gives free will choice to choose whom they will want to serve God chooses everybody but he wants everybody to willingly choose him. Seeing this makes one wonder why people would not want to choose God.shame on the Catholic religion and all other religions that force it on another human being.
