Venice, once a centre of free thinking, suffers under a climate of terror brought about by the Inquisition. The church’s most powerful weapon will be a new type of inquisition, controlled by the Pope himself. He will use it to curtail the spread of a competing religion, and eliminate those who betray the faith. It will stop the flow of new ideas let loose by the printing press, and repress the birth of modern scientific thought. A new campaign in the battle for the souls of Europes Christians is about to begin.
Based on previously unreleased secret documents from European Archives including the Vatican, Secret Files of the Inquisition unveils the incredible true story of the Catholic Church's 500-year struggle to remain the world's only true Christian religion. It traces Catholicism's determination to maintain power at any cost in medieval France, 15th century Spain, Renaissance Italy and even into the 19th century. Historians, experts and Church authorities advise on the handling of this controversial subject matter.

So right. The mere act of changing anything about beliefs said to be inspired by God and written by God means in order for it to be legit then a leader and any leader of religion all of a sudden changing or bending the rules and or words of God(religious text changes) can only be the works of the devil and false prophets. Otherwise that means the religion and texts were not written by God or were wrong to begin with unless the Lord spoke to or sent another prophet legitimately which is not the case is the beliefs of most modern religions. They are just waiting for the return of God or the anti Christ. So changes In the word shows the work of the devil and the corruption and misuse of the church or religion largely due to lack of oversight of the top allowing them to actively con people without being caught

The missing element is freedom to worship as one feels. I am sure that all Christian churches preach toleration and the Golden Rule. But we hear little today of freedoms, especially freedom of religion. The Inquisition did not come about because of free choice, but rather to dominate and crush any opposition. It is a sad reflection on the Catholic Church, which church has done magnanimous works for the advancement of mankind. We may say that the Inquisition was done at a time of superstition and yet, it came about as an outgrowth of the Renaissance, which was the greatest rebirth of knowledge in the long history of this earth.

@@alantompkins4422 The same attitude oozed from John Calvin in Geneva. Brutal cruel, unforgiving, just begins to cover the evil he forced onto people, all in the name of ridding "the church" of popery. Yet, he imitated even adopted so much methodology from his RCC upbringing. This happened when the Geneva council gave Calvin full control over the city and Calvin's edicts were enforced by the state sword and torture chambers. Bottom line: Abuse and wholesale homicide follow any group that governs a body of people, no matter what the ideology might be. Nobody really knew what a monster John Calvin (real name Jean Cauvin) was until he was granted status as "One and Only Voice of God on Earth" and his writings were considered Holy Writ same as the biblical authors. Power granted and liberally enforced by the city-state.

I was flabbergasted by the comments of the Vatican undersecretary who seemed to soft-pedal how horrendous the actions of the inquisition were. To diminish crimes because they were "in the past" is to forget that the exact same thinking that created the inquisition has been with us continually up to this day. There are segments of our society that are still trying to force religious conformity to their own understanding of the Bible, and to make those Biblical interpretations into secular law. The same thinking that boiled that poor student in oil (to, what... "teach him a lesson"?) are present even now and must be exposed and resisted always.

Well. At the end of the day I enjoy this documentary I committed myself to God when I was 19. I have not always done very well but my heart has always been in the right place. I have been a Lutheran for 22 years, now although I do not go to church on Sunday. I used to but now I know where two or more are gathered. So I encourage anybody reading this if they want a closer relationship with God simply read the book. And never ever take 100 hundred percent of what anybody says as the truth you are all competent enough to understand exactly what the Bible means. you do not need to be led in a house or building with a group of people to God. It is a strong tool that can also be a weapon. If you ever read something in scripture that you don’t understand just keep reading it will clarify itself.

As in Africa, Asia, Middle East today, those that are educated control and manipulate the ill educated. The end of religions control in Europe started with universal education becoming more prevalent, as they suppressed the poor getting educated as they feared losing their control if people questioned and asking......why. Reason why Latin was so important as the language of the RC masses was that only the few knew it, and therefore they controlled the narrative. Reason for the vilification of the Luther, Tyndal and Caxton as the propagatists of the non latin versions of the bible.

It is obvious that the Catholic Church was a colossal structure and leading force throughout history and especially during the Inquisition. But how did it become so? No one has answered that question as far as I know. How did the church become so powerful? Jesus and his disciples are long dead and forgotten. But for some reason his name, life and likeness was perpetuated. It’s a mystery to me.

The idea of religion is sound giving rules of behaviour etc. The problem, I feel, is how it is used by the players. It's so much easier to be kind, helpful and generally nicer to people. The bad side is that, wherever you go, someone has to fight for and hold that power and power can corrupt.

If only the decline of Catholicism had been complete or that the hierarchy had truly undertaken some reform within the church. Let's not forget that until Vatican II in the 1960s Mary from Magdala was vilified. I blame Saul of Tsarsis later known as Paul. Peter also is partly to blame for the early corruption of Yeshua's message. Peter was so jealous of Mary Magdelena that he was the first to slander her. Let's not forget that the vast majority of the new Testament is letters purportedly written by a man who never followed Yeshua and instead persecuted the followers. Mary of Magdala was the first to see what she stated was the undead body of Yeshua and told the men. She was THE most important person in the early church.

No one knows who where what and when.....not one word in the gospels is or was spoken by Christ, not one word was penned until 300 years after the supposed death of some dude who might or might not of ever been born. The early church leaders allowed some scripture, but purposely dis- allowed many other scripture because it didn't fit their narrative and their own personal agenda. If you take the Bible literally You then must believe Sasquatch is flying UFO'S and Elvis is it's co-pilot I am still amazed at how many people take the Bible as factual truth when it's really the number 1 all time selling book of lies and false promises pure fiction written by an ancient group of people greedy For power to control another group of people

Religious teachings have broken away fron what the Apostles taught and thus we find that cryptic quote of Christ where He says He shall not come back until there is a falling away. Falling away from what? From truth. The general apostacy was prophecised by many prophets: Zachariah, Isaiah and Malachi are but three who mentioned it. Once teaching were corrupted the authority of the Priesthood was restored and therefore a Restoration was needed. In Revelation we read of another angel with the gospel, telling of that restoration.

The church at Rome started to derail when Constantine injected secular government into it. Then 100 years later Augustine of Hippo (AKA St Augustine) started injecting pagan Gnosticism into the church dogma. Unfortunately instead of booting Augie's crazy ideas out the door, the "church" embraced them.....things like Holy War, killing "heretics" and similar pillars the church was built on.

@ all those comments lauding a Protestant/lutheran outlook: please go read your own history. Start with Henry xiii s destruction of monasteries, etc, continue with Elizabeth 1st burning of Catholics and Cromwell complete destruction of English culture and learning. Then look into German witch trials and the almost universal persecution of anabaptists by Swiss, German and Dutch authorities. This is only barely about religion; it’s primarily about power and control.

Catholicism is the root of the destruction of Christianity and any good in the world. Time is short if I where you I’d make darn sure I wasn’t offending God every time I tried to worship Him with false gods. My own mother was a Roman Catholic on her deathbed she converted. It was only when I showed her the scripture that the church withheld from her. I don’t see how anybody could be both Catholic and know the truth. The truth being only what God has said not what man has lied about for greed and power. The most important thing is getting into heaven and I’m not saying that you won’t get into heaven but I think you’re making it very hard on yourself with your chosen faith. I hope I’m wrong. I’m not though. I’ve read the scripture. Please do the same. Read for yourself. ❤

Coming from Northern Ireland I would disagree.......ALL of the major religions pay lip service and reality are run by men as an avenue to power and subjugation of otgers especially women. Treat Jesus as a philosopher and his words like the teachings of Buddha, the rest of it is constructured over the centuries by men to control other men......remember the educated were priests and ruling heirarchy and non educated were the majority and they all started to lose their power over the masses when secular universal education became more available.......the educated are less gullible than the non educated

When the curtain on the Jewish temple was torn in half, when Jesus gave up his soul, that was the clear signal that God no longer required an intermediary between people and Himself. The common person now could approach God with prayer and establish a relationship with Him. Now there was no need and no use for any priests, high priests to take the people's offerings to God. All those priestly barnacles were gone for good. Getting back to the beginning of man's relationship with the Holy God.

It is history and lots of it well documented (including in the Vatican Library and made available to scholars).......just not the history that the RC church controlled and narrated to the uneducated masses for centuries. Universal education has been the biggest leveller but has destroyed the power of the church or the control by the men that use it to control others. The word 'WHY' has been the downfall of the church, as the 1st and 2nd Industrial revolution has levelled the social heirarchy and has pulled down the power of the old guard and monarchies. It is no different to the situation in the 3rd World countries of today, whereby the educated few control the ill educated masses, and whether this is through religion or tribalism the effect is the same. Or in totalitarian states whereby the media and education system is used to control the masses by controlling the narrative - how are these different to how the RC church controlled the masses in the past.
