Subscribe for more flying and aircraft ownership content. Here is a great example of why it is critical to clean, inspect, and maintain your airplane. Even a plane that is seemingly flying perfectly has faults, it's your job to find them!
Can you guess what I find missing or disconnected on my Mooney M20C as I perform some routine service?
Just a note, I use Tekton tools almost exclusively. I work for Tekton and love our products!

4:55 that's not the oil pressure pickup, that's the fuel primer inlet. There is no pressurized oil in the heads. 10:35 there is not vacuum in the exhuast. That's the cold air source for your heater. The heated air going into your cabin has to originate from somewhere before it's heated.

Thanks man. Kind of curios about the fuel primer inlet...I don’t have a primer. What else could it be?

Thanks for watching Dale. The airplane has now been through annual inspection twice, and we feel like we've got most everything in good order. It definitely pays to inspect the plane in the presence of a good A&P / IA.

Youre a cool dude flying a plane. But just a thought, if you can fly and 'repair' your plane with the VERY limited understanding of the mechanics (quite funny I give you that), then a lot more people should really be into GA! Keep your work up! Best,

Replace the GE landing light bulb with LED. I did on my 1965 M20C. The LED draws 1amp! You can basically leave it on continuously because it will last longer than the plane will. You will not be sorry. Do the Nav light too, since they have to be on continuously to power the Tailbeacon. Lastly, get on Mooneyspace.com if you haven’t already done so. Phenomenal resource for Mooney owners.

First thing i noticed with the cowl off is that the hose attachment point on the back of your engine doghouse/baffles has no hose attached. scrolling through some of the comments, i think you got this fixed, but i dont see any good list of everything that hose does. the hose you are manipulating at 9:30 in the video is meant to be attached there. The function of that hose is to feed ram air from the doghouse to the muffler shroud, both for providing cabin heat and for carburetor heat. That hose being disconnected is incredibly dangerous, for several reasons: 1: CO ingress - with that hose loose in the cowl, it is intaking cowl air instead of fresh air, and can allow exhaust into the cabin ventilation system. 2: Carburetor heat - without that hose being fed ram-air, applying carburetor heat, which intakes through that hose, will result in SIGNIFICANT power loss. 3: carburetor heat - the inlet path through for carb heat is UNFILTERED (this is why you should never use carb heat on the ground except during runup test) - that hose loose is sucking in all the dirt in the cowl... straight to your carb. 4: engine cooling: with that hose nib open, the air which should be going through your cylinder fins and keeping the engine cool is bypassing them entirely to go through that hole and pressurize the inside of the cowl, further increasing resistance to airflow through the cooling fins.... so, yeah, that one hose can kill you four different ways if it is not attached.
@MyTimeToFly
@MyTimeToFly 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the great details! I did reattach the hose, and it's stayed in place since. As a matter of fact I look at it during every preflight inspection.

Dump the landing light! They are rated for 25 hours but you may not get even that since the filament can just break from the vibration. LED or HID is the only way to go.

The small line coming off number 3 cylinder is manifold pressure gauge the dipstick tube get tight on the dipstick and when you check the oil it has a tendency to unscrew it they also crack and brake off some times take it and make sure it is not cracked

@@MyTimeToFly One thing to look out for on that motor is that the cam is on the top of the case, and being there it can get rust on it if it sits too long without flying. So fly often. At least once a month or so. Also adding Cam Guard to the oil helps alot too. Happy flying!

The hose is to supply fresh upper cowling air down into the heater shroud around the muffler to heat the air for cabin heat. As part of the inspection, it can be checked for exhaust leaks. However, a leak can happen any time so a CO detector is a good device to have. Do NOT depend on a finger pulse oximeter since carbon monoxide poisoning looks like FALSELY oxygenated blood to the oximeter!! Once CO is bound to hemoglobin, it is practically permanently, chemically bonded! So it is imperative to PREVENT CO exposure. BTW, I'm PhD Chemical Physicist and world expert in medical grade commercial oximeter design with over 25 patents in the field. I tend to use the minimum heater airflow and use the side ball vent to direct air directly at me. This article is reminding me to get a new CO detector!

@MyTimeToFly

No concern here, we’ve got really good support through LASAR. Bottom line, there is a demand for parts. Where there is demand, there will be supply (my opinion).

Hmm, dirt and oil in/on the a/c is an indicator for the mechanic. Leave it on for annual so your mechanic can see it as evidence. Give your mechanic a hand with it and learn from him/her

Cory; I am pretty sure you can get an IPC [illustrated parts catalog] for both the engine and the airframe. For some reason I thought that would come with the airplane when you bought it, as well as the Mx logs. Probably no law says you should, just thought it did. you could probably find a Mx manual on line somewhere...Found this site for $40 mooneyspace.com/files/ [looks like you saved that much by not replacing your pants]. All that stuff you did should probably be written in the aircraft Mx log somewhere.

My wife and I are travel nurses, I’m a pilot and my wife is a student pilot. We’re thinking of buying a Mooney M20 to use as a weekly flyer to and from jobs. How reliable are Mooneys? If we put the money and work in would you trust the plane to get you to work?
@MyTimeToFly
@MyTimeToFly 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like some great adventure through your careers! It seems like a Mooney would fit your mission quite well. I might think about spending enough to get one with TKS, or at least a turbo model to be able to get up above some weather. Are you and instrument pilot? If not, that’s a clear must have before traveling for work in a GA airplane!!!

Check your Lycoming manual, service bulletins and service letters first. There’s a long well documented history with these engines. The factory stuff is tedious to read but it’s safe and usually the most effective way to go. If you really want to take it up a notch, I highly recommend the series of books and articles by Mike Busch of Savvy Aviation. BTW, nice airplane you’ve got there. I’m looking for one just like it. I’m really enjoying your videos.
