Godzilla’s roar has long been considered one of cinema’s most iconic and recognisable sounds. Oft-copied or otherwise homaged, the original and rather unique roar terrified audience goers in the 1950s and has been built upon to dramatic effect in the numerous sequels and remakes since. So how did they actually make the original sound and where did the idea for Godzilla come from in the first place? As for the idea behind the monster, producer Tomoyuki Tanaka...

I could have sworn I had seen a documentary about Godzilla and they had pointed out that the core of his roar came from an old rusty gate at the back of Toho studios. They even went back and showed on camera opening the gate slowly during which you could hear the central sound in Godzilla's roar in the audio. I was wondering is anyone seen that documentary?

Well well well...l don't really give a shit where he got his Roar...Dumzillia movies are the stupidest movies ever made...Even when l was kid way back when sitting on the couch with the jock itch scratching my balls looking at a black&white TV thinking this is the stupidest movie l have ever seen of course having the jock itch did not help...An in that day most of the time if you saw a movie you had to have mom&dad take you to the theater it cost $00.25 cents each to get in....So when this new Dumzillia movie came out...It to is the second dumbest movie ever made....It bombed out to.....Anyway good try old man good try put a good spin on it and all...Thanks l think ??

Small point of bother for me. At the end of the video you list off a series of films, I'm pretty sure which still have posters available for viewer reference. I've heard of those films but never seen them. While I'm not inclined to check them out further, adding any available promo posters, if available, to your videos when mentioned, even if known by your primary viewers, many will not be. If there are future film history buffs in your Audience, encouraging viewers to investigate further can be done by simply adding the poster art. Gives searchers a visual reference for a look on Google. Small point, I know video is a year old. Not a complaint either, just a thought.

More random facts: Theres a french metal band called "Gojira" who was originally called "Godzilla" but had to change their name due to copyright. So they changed their name to the original japanese pronunciation "Gojira". They actually have a song called "Stranded" where the rythm guitarist/lead singer Joe Duplantier makes sort of a godzilla-esque sound with his guitar. Its quite cool.

The original roar was created outside of Toho Studios. Back in the 90's, there was a documentary on Godzilla and why the franchise was so popular. The host asked Toho what the roar was and how they created it. Well, the host was outside...and said "That's Toho's best kept secret". The host turned around and opened a wrought iron gate, walked through it, shut the gate....and smiled at the camera waiting for the world to pick up on the fact that the opening and closing of that gate was the exact sound of Godzillas roar...

I grew up a Godzilla fan, particularly his 1970s "duck-bill" phase, where his roar was utterly perfect. I tolerate his earliest film, where the roar sounded a bit muddy compared to the crisp 1970s roar. When the unforgivable Matthew Broderick version of Godzilla was to be released, the trailer clearly warned how bad the film would be. I attended a small generic science fiction convention in Los angeles, where the filmmakers of that new Godzilla film were speakers, and they allowed a Q&A. Once at the mic, I first asked him about the empire State building lightning strike, as I was still living in New Jersey when they were filming that. The filmmakers were pleased to report they did get that footage, and it would be in the film. I then asked about the roar that could be heard in the trailer, and whether that would be the roar that would be in the film. This was not the first time an open question from me has raised deer-in-headlights expressions on filmmakers. They waffled a bit until they could obfuscate no longer. I pointed out that no matter what anatomical changes they may have done to Godzilla, if Godzilla's roar was not Godzilla's roar, the film would pretty much be hated, and most likely their film would rightfully do poorly at the box office...

I'll confirm the origin story on the naming of Godzilla. The Japanese don't have a unique word for gorilla so they use that pronunciation within their language (it still abides by the same rules and sounds of Japanese though). So there's the first part with ゴリラ(go-ri-ra). The Japanese word for whale is 鯨(ku-ji-ra). So by smashing gorira and kujira that settled on gojira. Better than the other option of kurira in my opinion. Does that translate in to Godzilla? No. But it's what the dubbing studios decided to go with when they did this based on lip reading. That's how we also got "banana oil".

There was a TV "behind-the-scenes" movie about how they made the 1938 radio scarathon, H.G. Well's THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. They had to be very innovative in making the strange alien sound effects that Martian machines made, even the unscrewing of the original craft's hatch had to be very eerie. The original sound was recorded at a foundry. One of the huge pots was in need of grease and as it was stopped it made that sound. I learned that in the late 70's

Dunno if someone already pointed this out or not, but two of the behind-the-scenes pictures you used in this video were NOT, in fact, Godzilla... They were Anguirus from the production stills from Godzilla Raids Again. Anguirus was the first daikaiju adversary Godzilla ever faced and in later movies became Godzilla's stalwart ally.

I've noticed many more typos in this video than usual - you may need to proof your videos a little better... Of course, I realize that you're usually on a tight deadline, but as a longtime subscriber, I've come to expect a high level of scholarship on these videos. Thank you for the interesting trivia!

When he first said the Wilhelm scream, I thought it was the scream that Goofy would make when falling, that too has been used in many movies and cartoons. It's nice how youtube is much like a Laugh-In's take on Wikipedia...Look that up in your Funk & Wagnalls.
