Attenborough's Wonder of Eggs
David Attenborough has a passion for birds' eggs. These remarkable structures nurture new life, protecting it from the outside world at the same time as allowing it to breathe. They are strong enough to withstand the full weight of an incubating parent and weak enough to allow a chick to break free. But how is an egg made? Why are they the shape they are? And perhaps most importantly, why lay an egg at all? Piece by piece, from creation to hatching, David reveals the wonder behind these miracles of nature.

Love these short documentaries 👍 and a few questions sprung off the top of my head. Does that adjusted control of incubation depend on the reproductive experience of the bird? Lower temperatures do also mean that more energy is needed to keep the tiny tit's body warm, so the bird has to find more food to get that energy. I have watched the livecam footage of these species and usually the male also feeds the female throughout incubation of eggs. Is the absence from the nest during incubation somehow related to an underperformer male? Hope these are not just silly questions.
@RordamJ
@RordamJ 2 жыл бұрын
Usually, temperature fluctuations are fine for the developing eggs. A couple of hours of being exposed to the outside air won't kill the embryos; the bowl-shaped design of most nests and the soft material they're lined with also serves as an insulator. Different birds have different styles of incubating: some parents take shifts of incubation (pigeons, albatrosses) while in some species only one parent incubates while the other provides food and protection (chickens, hornbills).
@sternamc919sterna3
@sternamc919sterna3 2 жыл бұрын
@@RordamJ temperature fluctuation will not kill the embryo if the decrease/increase is not signifficant but changes the rate of embryonic development. Such as in most egg laying species, at higher temperatures (within the species range) the embryonic development is faster and hatching occurs earlier. In turtles and aligators it also seems to regulate the proportion of males/females.

How Do Birds Incubate Their Eggs?
@dinoflame9696
@dinoflame9696 2 жыл бұрын
Birds are in many ways more complex than mammals... But their reliance on flight has been both a blessing and curse. Apart from all the advantages, it also puts an upper limit to their weight and subsequently brain size and gestation period. Otherwise I could easily see a bird or bat-like mammal being the first "intelligent" species instead of a primate.

How in the world can we verify that the bird speeds up the process of incubation solely due to the Abundance of caterpillars appearing for a two week limited availability.... wouldn't that be coincidental more than anything until research can totally confirm that being the only significant reasoning.... what I mean is when you do research isn't all avenues raised as significant until they become ruled out over vigorous surveillance of several factors to determine the real reason like how do as know they don't incubate on cold days because of energy being waste which leads to the counterproduction oc incubation on it maybe more effortless to getting the eggs the most desired temperature on warm days
