4 ай бұрынThere is no magic formula for building your goat/sheep herd overnight. Many sale barn nannies? ewes, are there for a reason. You may be able to buy good genetics as doelings through a sale barn or if a barn has a special replacement sale. Off-farm sales are a good option. Being able to talk and get help from another producer may be worth more than the cost of the breeding stock.

I agree, it was a huge turning point for me once I got my replacements into production. Things just keep getting better now. Never seemed to matter how much I spent on nannies you just have to retain the ones that work in your program. I've spent anywhere from 175-300 for bred nannies and had to cull the same percentage out of each group. You can find good ones but it's hard

It takes some time but if you like doing it just buy a pup and start. Lots of good videos online and paid-for tutorials.

Do you hold back your ewes lambs for a year before breeding as well?

No, they seem to be able to handle motherhood better at 1 year old than the goats, in our management system.
