Oh, how I needed to hear this message today! As I am approaching ‘old age’, I find myself this very day burying my only sibling and the last of my family. I am no longer someone’s sister, someone’s wife, someone’s mother, someone’s child…..and yet I am SOMEONE. I’ve been struggling with just WHO I am……when the question should be WHOSE I am. Thank you for reminding me!

The message from Piper John surely helps. I have been told countless times I do a lot for the church when I truly believe what I do shouldn't be classified as "a lot." But, at the same time, in my life of singleness, I've awoken my old identity as a result of my new identity not being fully ingrained in Christ. I've questioned how I am able to use the gifts God has given me for His sake while earning money as a means for whatever He has in plan for me, and I sometimes feel lost not knowing because of my strong desire to know. I trust that He'll guide me and place me where He desires, but at the moment, it's difficult to be patient.

This is so right. Needed to hear this today. So easy to get caught up in the sentiment of the day. I'm my own master, etc.. this goes directly against that. I belong to God. But its good He loves us and won't overburden us.

Fundamentally, there are two identity groups on earth. Firstly, there are those who have been born again and in a sense created again (2 Cor 5:17) and live for Christ. And secondly, there are those who have not been born or created again and who do not live for Christ. All other identity markers are very unimportant in comparison.

Modern translations of Romans 1:1 that use the word 'servant' are not doing justice to the original text. The Greek word Paul uses is doulos, the standard word of the time for a slave. Paul is saying, as John Piper rightly notes, that he is a slave of Christ and that Christ is his owner. If this sounds a little shocking, it is meant to be. In modern English the word 'servant' suggests a menial worker in a low paid job, but not someone who is considered the legal property of someone else. This is very different from what Paul is saying about himself. In fact, this theme of Christians being the slaves of God and Christ is a major New Testament theme, one that is often obscured by badly translating the original Greek.
