When, as an independent artist, you record your own music, you typically are the owner of the sound recording.
The sound recording is one of two intellectual property rights to any song (the other right being the composition, aka the publishing). In the attached video (part 3 in our series on the Basics of Music Copyrights and Royalties) I identify and explain the 9 (yes, nine!) most common ways that ownership of the sound recording generates revenue for you.
If you want to maximize the money you make from your music, don’t sleep on this video. If you weren’t aware of it before, on any one release, the bulk of the payments for the exploitation of that release go to the owner of the sound recording.
