I bought a pair of women's shoes at a yard sale last weekend and the lady asked me who I was getting them for. I straight told her I was buying them to resell online and we had a nice little chat together. I don't think people should worry about "comping" in front of the sellers. When you flip stuff it takes work. You have to go find the items, photograph, post, package, and ship. All that takes time to do.

I think the main reason some people are reluctant to use the eBay app in an op shop is because some places don't price goods until the point of sale. I've had a number of places like this, often smaller places run by volunteers. Once they learn you're a reseller, they often charge you more when you pay....and give you a dirty look. Or next time you go in, you find all all their prices have increased cause they've caught on to what you're doing, and want to make that money themselves. There is one place near me where I kept buying certain types of shoes. One day I came in and they'd increased their prices- to exactly what my sold comps were! I got beaten at my own game lol. Now for this reason, most of the time I have to hide what I'm doing with the eBay app in store. Oh also should add, I source a lot at garage sales, and for some reason the people around here have a particular contempt for resellers. They will almost always charge you more if they suspect you are going to resell. I have a range of excuses for pulling out my phone now at garage sales, pretending to be texting instead.
@backfromburnout
@backfromburnout 3 жыл бұрын
That's such a shame isn't it. Hopefully they realise soon they don't have the traffic to charge that much for your shoes and they drop in price again soon for you to buy again!

I was at an op shop yesterday and I bought 250 books as they were having a huge sale! When I explained I was a part time reseller the lady asked how I knew which books sell and I showed her how to use the ebay app to price comp... she was amazed that that information is Available and was very appreciative of me taking the time to show her, I also helped move the books from the bottom shelves to the top so it looked more full, I was already down there price comping and just grabbing books so I thought I’d help them out a little and it took me no time at all.

We learnt from setting up market stalls and then the book shop with customers requesting particular books we would then go out to source for them. Like with Ebay - if you sell a set of Harry Potter books - you will try to source another set vs books that didn't sell after 8yr - you have a market stall $2ea all books. It really is about doing and taking that first step vs procrastinating as to whether you buy it or leave it. If you do a library sale - it's like crazy fast filling bags for $15ea trying to beat everyone else to the most valueable books. With the overseas prices that come up in the app - add 10% to their price before working out a price to sell. ie: the book from the US costs $19.95 + $21.95 post = $41.90 + 10% = $46. So if you sold the same book for $44 - you would be $2 cheaper.

In the early 2000s before smartphones, I had a cellphone connected pdf. I had a laser scanner attached to it and I would scan books, cds, dvds etc. People had no idea what I was doing and would ask me what the heck was that. Good times lol Today everyone has a computer in their pocket so its normal to see folks scanning books. Heck I have people look up every type of item I am selling in my physical shop. its a much different world today and everyone looks up stuff. Even if its just to check if its a good price vs online etc.

Lianne I think for me I had to because I can become a little scatterbrained lol. KZfaq takes up a lot of hours now (probably around 20hrs a week!) for me. And I can only do so many things at once. So focussing on the books helps me streamline and keep a systemised workflow. It makes it faster for me to source also only looking at one area in a charity shop or when sourcing

No we don't have world of books here (which I know makes it hard in the UK) and we can't sell second hand books on Amazon in Australia so eBay is a good platform for us to sell books on. I think the UK people need to look for the more unique books, vintage or look to be selling bundles (I don't think world of books sell bundles and sets). I need to do a bit more research for the UK people when I get a chance as I know a lot would like to sell books.

@backfromburnout
@backfromburnout 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary, thanks for watching! We can do this however it’s not compulsory to enter the barcode in a listing so most Aussies don’t do it. So the information it pulls up is not really accurate as it misses so many listings and sales. I have tried to do this many times as it would make life so much easier but I just don’t get accurate enough results for listing at the right price sadly. It’s a real pain.

I know a lot of people look down on resellers and feel like they are taking from the needy. I have realized that resellers are doing their own communities great service by turning the cast-off items, that were worth little to nothing to the person who donated, into real money that they then spend in their local communities, supporting local business and paying taxes. There is no shortage of used items for those that are less advantaged. Yes a reseller might snag up the higher brand items but they will generate more money for the economy and there are plenty of other perfectly good and usable items for the community. The mountains of things going into landfills is tragic.

Aren’t there apps that will allow you to scan the barcode and give you prices in the current market?
@backfromburnout
@backfromburnout 2 жыл бұрын
Yes in American they have apps for that as they work with Amazon. You can also use the eBay camera app. However in Australia it’s not required to include barcodes into your eBay listing which means the eBay app for scanning is not very accurate. We also are not allowed to sell second hand books on Amazon so we don’t have those apps.

Hi Mel. Thank you for your content; I just came across your video via a search. What are your thoughts on selling ex-library books? Is it worth the effort, and if it is, what tips would you recommend to improve sales of such books? Is it much different to selling books that are not ex-library? Thanks, and take care.

@backfromburnout

Yes they will, you just need to grade them down to acceptable generally as often they are covered and have pen inside or stickers etc. There is an item specific that lets you mark them as ex-library also.

Question... (Pardon my ignorance as I am still learning about eBay as I sell on fb marketplace) How is it 6 books can cost $7.16 to post?! My post office charges heaps more. I posted sewing patterns to a lady on fb to QLD yesterday and weighed less than 5kg and cost me $12.50 to post! Lucky I charged her $15.95 postage to cover my costs.

@backfromburnout
@backfromburnout 3 жыл бұрын
It has helped me as I can be a little bit of a scatterbrain if I have too many different things going on at once in my life. I can spend a lot of hours now a week on KZfaq and finding time for everything can be hard. So just doing one niche helps my workflow and systems. Although, it does worry me a little having a single niche and I would like to try to source something wholesale at some stage so I can sell some products on repeat.

@@marielleluxama1875 Hi. Are you in the U.S. or Australia? The first thing to do is open up an Amazon Pro Seller account. @@scout1710 The Amazon Seller App is a free phone app that comes as part of the membership. If you register for an Individual account then you're charged $0.99 cents per listing. At least that's the way it used to be. If you register for a Professional account it's a flat $39.99 per month with no listing fees. I don't know now as to how long it is after you first sign up until you're charged for the first month; probably when you sign up.
