For me developmental edits I think will also include some missing pieces of information. I'm kind of bad about characters showing up without much of a reason or explanation hehe.

I haven't written my first yet but when I have did my world building, decades worth of it, I did outline the first two volumes of the series, with a bit of the 3rd volume. My approach so far has been to follow the Alien or Terminator series sequels: Alien to Aliens, or Terminator to Terminator II. Each sequel was superior to the first, however the first movies were so good that you may even convince yourself they're still the best because of the original thrilling discovery phase. However the sequels after these original sequels fell really flat, a lot was lost (soul) during the third movies and this stuck with me for decades, and I think about this all the time as I outline sequels to my first novel I am writing. I want what I like about the characters and the world to remain consistent going forward and not making radically different changes just to trip up readers. I have one really good trait about myself: I am consistent, and I am very self aware of this.

That final question came just in time! A couple minutes ago I had been texting a friend wondering whether I should give my MC girl a Irish twin (siblings closely related to each other in age but are not actually twins) and I felt very conflicted since it would add a whole new layer and give my MC girl a bit of a more family related dynamic which I know she has but just didn't know how to bring and I think a slightly older sister would do the trick since she has two 5 year old ones! Not only that but she would have a very powerful and motivational arc espexially with the shock that hits her if I do add her! This video had me leaning towards adding her but let's see what I do! If any of you wanna let me know what you think I'd be very happy to take your opinions on board!! 🤗

Might sound cliche, but it depends. Ultimately you know your story and characters best, writing is basically translating it from imagination onto paper and doing the best to make it as seamless as possible through various different techniques. But now that that's out of the way, I have a feeling your story will be character focused. Whether that's true or not, the dynamics between ur MC and supporting characters can certainly impact the story and make it more meaningful. If ur conflicted about whether u should include the older sister or not, just ask urself why you would include her in the story. Does she represent a certain theme that will be minorly explored alongside the main theme? Will her relationship with the MC be an inspiring one, having the older sister fall into more of a mentor role perhaps? Or would their relationship bring out the MC's darkest fears, as the MC finds herself jealous of her older sister's success and/or sense of responsibility? Really, there's a ton of possibilities what their relationship could be and I couldn't tell you all of that, you probably have a story of your own already in ur head. The idea is, if u wish to include the older sister in the story, its best u think of her role in the narrative and how it can amplify the story you already have in mind. And whether the sister is older or closer to her age, will probably not impact the story too much (it depends on ur narrative and the relationship between them). Having the MC's sister be closer to the age, you could make the strength of their relationship their close understanding of each other and deeply intimate siblinghood. To contrast, you can make the weakness of that same relationship that the MC struggles to find her individuality due to her growing used to spending most of her time with her twin sister. If u want the MC's sister to be older, you could make the strength of their relationship smth like the MC having someone more experienced and a "young lady" of sorts to look up to. Weakness could be the MC's fear of living up to her sister's expectations. These are all just examples, and they don't strictly belong into one category or the other. But the details you choose can make their dynamic a little more symbolic, which will make it feel more natural to the reader. Play around with the details enough, and you could end up creating a relatively unique dynamic that becomes a fresh experience for readers (I found it to be that way in Abbie's novel 100 Days of Sunlight). I hope this helped you and good luck with your story!

I see writing as a creative process similar to going pregnant. Cheesy I know. You carry this story from inception to realization and along the way you and it grow together. Then you feel elation and fear as it is released into the world. You worry, will people like it? Then you "birth" your second book, and I think of it as the sibling of the first. You nurture, you worry, and agonize. Even if it feels fresh you have a backbone of experience, confidence and even trust in your own ability as the "mother" of this book. Don't worry about your future books. Your second book can become an even greater book than the first. Not because it's not your first, but because you know more of what to expect. Every step is one you have already taken. Enjoy the process, now that you can.

#AskAbbie Hello there! I got a question that I think could be interesting to discuss. I’m planning on having a character who first experiences one character arc about trusting himself and then one about trusting others. Now, even when he is finished with both positive-change-arcs, I think he would still have trouble with learning how to balance both (or when to trust himself and when to delegate things to others). Could this work as a third arc for him, or what other internal conflict could I give him (while keeping it related to his two previously learned truths)? Thanks a lot for all your advice.

I have a problem with writing my story because tempo and action are really diffrent from each other in book 1 and book 2. In book 1 is taking place in separated area, and characters have to find way out from that town. On their way are simple puzzles, zombies(action elements), and boss fight. Boss who's has a control over a town because of a security cameras and stuff. In book 1 main story is about finding a way out, but after that part of story characters start to explore "outside world" and moving from place to place to survive. I'm scared that a climax is going to get worse. In book one there was atmosphere of mystery and unknown, in second one chacters are just trying to survive and most problems comes from looking for food and conflicts in a group. I don't know how to put it. I mean book 1 was the full story of finished work from middle school. I decided to make more content and i have plans for more parts. In book 3 chacters are finding more people and books 4 and 5 are about the conflict of small states that formed during the apocalypse.

Okay, that part about side characters actually made things click in my head for me. I've been co-planning a series with a friend and sometime after doing the first outline of the first installment, she decided she was going to remove one of the side characters she introduced and I couldn't understand why. She said it was because of clutter and that character not being necessary, but because I naturally create side characters with purpose to the narrative ingrained into their concepts and stuff, I didn't realize that this side character truly was unnecessary. But when I heard that part of the video, it made me look back at all that happened and realized that every other side character had a sub-plot except this one, and the one scene they make a substantial contribution to is something that any of the other side characters could still do in their place. It'll definitely shape the way I look at my casts going forward.

In case Abbie doesn't answer, there's no concrete pros or cons for point of view, I think. Abbie prefers to write in first person as she feels it is more immersive to her (I watch her videos). Altho other people could find third person more natural to them. First person does generally tend to be more immersive cuz of the whole "I, Me." stuff. But when I first tried first person it was difficult not to repeat the pronoun "I" alot. I personally prefer third person as thats what Im used to, but it has its own sort of problems as well. Like writing sentences with less agency unintentionally "The door opened" instead of "He opened the door." They have different types of cons that people can look over while writing. And also have their pros that the point of view you choose naturally makes you pay attention to more. My favorite combo personally is third person close, past tense, particularly in fantasy genres. I personally feel there's something fantastical about using that combinaton in fantasy stories. Although if I write anything more romance and close to real life, I find myself gravitating to the first person present tense combo. As Abbie herself said, there's no one right way to do things. U can experiment with what u like and prefer and see if it works for u. If u didnt find my comment helpful, I'm sure Abbie's posted videos discussing most, if not all of the stuff you mentioned in your comment.

@audicat2894 .. I know this was asked awhile ago, but basically concentrate on that "why does this matter?" and the point that you want to make with your story. There's not really any plot (sequence of events) that hasn't been done before, but the way it is told is unique (it's old, but still valuable--20 Master Plots by Ronald B Tobias)

@oceanalyrics4891
@oceanalyrics4891 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not one to give advice; considering the fact that I'm in the same situation, but it depends on how your book is structured. Say for example: If your character died out of nowhere and doesn't have a huge comeback - it's not going to be as interesting. If you have other characters, they're reaction itself could make his death more sad than it already is. List down some questions it'll help you a lot. Some examples are: How does his death affect the book? What is your reasoning for bringing him back? Just questions like that. As an Author you have to be able to kill off your characters - even if it's just for the sake of character development. Sure it'll break your reader's heart and yours as well. If you only bring characters back because you love them: it won't make any sense. Which ever one you decide to do, your book will be interesting as long as you have a good plot. So choose which one you think is best.

In case Abbie doesnt answer, yes there have been stories with more than one main character. Its more popular in fantasy stories and similar genres where a wider cast can be regularly found. There's no single way for it to work u can incorporate it by switching POVs whenever it fits the story or perhaps other methods. I do believe the very novel Abbie published "100 Days of Sunlights" might be written in the style of having two main characters. Im no expert but the short answer is yes you can. But the more main characters u have the more ull have to delve into each one's thoughts and work on their extensive character work. If u feel its important to the story that they both have this role, then probably go for it. Otherwise it'd probably sacrifice the pacing and the focus. U need to make sure why ur doing it, basically. Hope this helps somehow.

@@klaraleavesley8127 Yes but its probably safer to switch it up. Or at the very least, have them believe in it for different reasons. Let's say both characters have a misbelief of loyalty to the kingdom (for example). On the surface, they both have a misbelief to be loyal and protect the kingdom. But u could have their reasonings/inner desires be different. One character for example, could do it out of a sense of national righteousness. This land was meant to be theirs and no other kingdom shall stand in their way. If they are not the ones ruling, then nobody can rule (just as an example). The other for example, could see it in a different way. They could have been born originally outside the kingdom and now live here as a "second rate citizen". So they climb the ranks and work hard and demonstrate loyalty so that they can feel like they belong. They don't want to feel like outsiders anymore, they want a secure region/faction they can call home. A safety blanket or something. So on the surface, they both believe they need to be loyal to this certain kingdom to get what they want (One national righteousness, the other social security). But their desires are not the same not even close. If u dont have the characters differ in any way, then they might as well be the same character. Short answer is; probably okay to have the same misbelief as long as there is some clear variety with the desires. (Hope this helped Im no pro)

What about relationships? books like "Game of thrones" and "the hunger games" are about relationships and they are popular.

My outline is the end lol. I know how the story ends, so that's where I'm going. When I tell people I don't even know what scene to write next, or what happens in the end of the scene i'm currently writing, they don't understand how i find myself. For me, as soon as I know what happens next, I lose all the interest in writing it, so I guess I actually only outline for my revision, bc damn, do they need revision
