Hello John, always very interested in your technical advice. For a few days on my handle Shimano Tiagra the brake lever of the rear derailleur has shifted slightly to the side for no reason which makes a space of 3mm with the small lever of the descent speeds. I wonder if it is not the tension spring of the lever that has moved or the cable is relaxed, yet the shifting remains correct and well adjusted. If you have a solution I'm interested, thank you in advance.

Hi John, I have a disc brake road bike but I bought a rim brake rear wheel which I planned to use for turbo training. The wheel doesn't seem to fit even though they use the same quick release. Why is this and is there any way I can adapt it so it does fit my bike? Keep up the awesome work!

Great show, ty for all the advice. My question is: I have an old 2x6 road bike and want to switch it to a straight handle bar. I was able to get new break leavers. BUT I have a problem with the shifters. Are there any "rapidfire-style" shifters I can use on the new handle bars instead of those gear shifters down at the frame tube?

I think it's worth adding that a binding chain link can also cause your chain to jump. We took my wife's bike to the shop twice for chain skipping, and nobody could figure it out. When we got home, she she asked "Could the chain itself cause that?" It sounded weird but I checked and found a rigid link. Problem solved. 🚴

Hi Jon, a few days ago on my first outside ride this year I experienced a chain snap while accelerating out of a corner. Made a good sweep but managed to hold on and did not crash. Chain was 105 and still in good condition but it snapped on the plates. Heard that this is quite unusual. What's your opinion? #askgcntech

Hi guys, love the channel! I just discovered that my front derailleur shifting woes were caused by the cable guide under the BB and internal routing around it restricting the cable movement. I added a drop of oil/lube. Problem solved! ...for now. Would grease be a better option to combat the wet, UK roads or is it a sign of another issue such as cable wear? Would love a long-term solution! All the best, Stuart

I need a new rear derailleur hanger for my focus Paralane aluminum frame. Online I can only find the ones for the carbon frame. My Question is: Are they any different from each other? The form is similar as far as I can tell. Could I get away with getting the one for the carbon frame or should I have one CNC machined for a lot more money?

Shimano rd 9100 problem, I had the same issue with my ultegra r8000. I ended up finding a fix where you loosen the hanger bolt then rotate the whole derailleur back on that hanger bolt and tighten back up to about 8nm. It rotates the derailleur back out of the way and takes up some chain slack at the same time. The same thing has been spotted being done on some of the team sky pinerellos.

Hi John. #askgcntech Always enjoy the little tips. A while back I converted my old 26" mountain bike (ex hire bike, Kona lanai so not great spec) to drop bars. Its got mechanical discs and I've found them really hard to adjust. To get any kind of bite with the drop bar brakes, I have to have the pads so close that they rub. Do drop bar levers (old tiagra) have a different pull ratio from MTB discs? Is there a way I could change this? Also tried a cross race on it early in the season, and it was proper hard work. Would it be possible to fit 700c or 27.5" wheels with narrower tyres into the frame? I've tried my rim brake wheels from my road bike and the physically fit, just the disc calipers (obviously) foul the spokes. Thanks for any advice Ps don't you hate these long taking questions 😇

#AskGCNTech I recently acquired a Wahoo KICKR for winter indoor training. I have my 11-speed road bike attached to it now, but I'd like to swap that out for my older 8-speed hybrid bike for the odd rainy day once the weather improves. What spacers will I need to make the conversion to an 8-speed cassette, and where do I install them on the KICKR freehub (inside or outside the cassette)? Wahoo recommends taking it to a local shop, but I think I can manage this on my own with the right parts.

Hello Jon, I recently bought my first Road Bike to get my feet wet.. It is an old Winora with a Hi-Ten Frame still running the full original Shimano Golden Arrow Groupset from 1980something. Everything is working fine except for the uniglide cassette (6 gears) which is starting to wear. Since i can't buy new uniglide cassettes anymore i am wondering what to do? Is it possible to change the old 126mm hub to a new 130mm hyperglide one by bending the steel frame a little (i read of people doing this on several forums) or is there an easy way to change the freewheel to a hyperglide one? Thx a lot and greetings from Frankfurt!

I had a jumpy chain and it was fixed by replacing the chain. If you chain jumps when you are starting off, or putting a lot of torque on it climbing, it might be because it is worn out and stretched so it doesn't mesh with the sprocket anymore. You can diagnose this by measuring the pitch of the chain and checking to see whether or not it is still in spec.

Hi Jon, I was surprised that you actually referred to cables stretching in the video. It's my impression that cable systems settle in after being installed, with the ferrels aligning better with frame lugs and component receivers, but that the steel cable cores themselves do not actually stretch beyond their elastic limit. Ultimately, over time, the cables also tend to wear into the ferrels and cable housing linings, and may also fray at the clamping points, all of which might be counter-acted with some barrel tightening in the short term. So maybe cable "stretch" is really more of a generic term for all of this other stuff going on?

I’ve brought all the bike washes recommended, even tried mild degreaser but as soon as it dry’s...sigh...there they are, those pesky stains. Besides the patent pending JC elbow grease what can be used to clean Matt paint back to show room condition inc removing sweat/gel/drool/tears?

Hi Jon/Oli, saw some light disc brake rotors online, they weight around 140-150g for a pair. They have bigger cutouts on the brake surface than other rotors and probably less thickness. Does they wear out brake pads faster and how safe it would be to use them, are they worth the savings? #askgcntech

Hi Jon, Ok I’ll start by saying I am a pensioner on state pension so not a lot of cash flying around, that being said I understand I may need to spend some. I have just bought a second hand cycle and when I got it home and gave the drive train a damned good clean and look at I found the chain was beyond stretched and so replaced it along with the dropout for the rear derailleur as it looked bent. Since doing that the chain is jumping while under load while cycling, and when it’s up in the work stand and I am changing from little cog to big the bottom jockey wheel starts to click at about cog six and just chatters louder the bigger I go. Do you think these are related or co-incidental? it cycled home about 30 miles with little issue other than sluggish gear change and crappy breaking which I just thought ok no great worried as new cables and housings should sort that out.

Hello Jon/Ollie. I got my first and brand new road bike 6 months ago, took it to a big city to be professionally assembled, brought it to the countryside where I live and enjoyed it since. Last week I noticed a stiff front hub. Took it to my local bike shop, the mechanic disassembled it and the cone is pitted. He said the issue is that the hub (from a Shimano WH-501) have too many ball bearings from the factory and took one from each side, from 11 to 10 balls. When I got home I searched at online foruns and the subject is complicated. Some say "fill it with the ball bearings" other say "fill it and take one out". Its a big can of worms. I got the exploded diagram from Shimano site and yes, 11 is correct. Do I leave it with 10 or take it back to put the extra ones? What might have been the cause for the issue? Love you guys. I owe you a beer. #askgcntech

Welves Maia I got a giant with 10 balls in the left and 7 on the right (rear hub where it should be 9 and 9). I should have have taken it in for warranty. But fixing it didn’t last the hub never gave t back to new, the cups were ruined and new cones keep putting. It’s now my trainer wheel. This is why I won’t use shimano hubs (but this was not a shimano hub), sealed cartridge for me only. I fee for you.

Hi, i have looked around and not found an answer. Quick trouble description: 1) purchase of a used Giant Ocr 2.0 from ebay bike is in very good condition, tiagra 3x9 speed rode it at everything seemed fine, decided to replace the chain by principle 2) replaced the tiagra chain for an ultegra one (HG93, 9s) fitted the length comparison with the old chain. trouble: upper, lower frontal chain rings work fine, but using the middle frontal and most of the backside chainrings, most immediately the more middle ones, the chain "slips". i cannot describe it well, it seems to slip one chain link to the front, it doesnt chain gears. going by the logic of some trouble shooting videos, the chain at that composition has slack, that is: i can form a "z" with the chain and could reduce its lenght as some people suggest is the cause. But the lenght of the chain fits the logic of the setup-videos that say: biggest frontal chain ring and biggest backside (lowest gear) and if there (!) you cannot form a z, the chain is short/long enough. Now i wouldnt guarantee that it didnt slip before. maybe i just used the biggest frontal ring, but since i rode within the city, i would tend to "it didnt slip before". is there anything special with 3x9 speed setups that cause this? the derailleurs seems properly aligned according to standarts. has anybody had this before? thx for replies!

Would just say about water trapped in the frame , that usually fine grit and dirt comes with it. If you tip the bake upside down this may get into the headset bearings resulting in a nasty grinding noise (and no doubt wear on the bearings). Just be careful which way round you tip it. If there is a drain hole in the bottom bracket it might be blocked. The above used to happen to me one one frame and it could easily acquire a pint or two of water on a wet ride -added to the weight!

#askgcntech I recently bought a gravel bike that uses QR hubs/wheels. I’m in the market for dedicated gravel wheels, preferably 650b, but want the option of using them for a future thru axel equipped frameset. Are thru axel to QR adapters universal or do I need a wheelset with special hubs that can accommodate both?

There are not universal adapters and are specific to the manufacturer. Get wheels that include the adapters like DT Swiss.

@markxkovacic
@markxkovacic 5 жыл бұрын
Direct mount brakes are the latest generation of caliper brakes. Post mount disk use the mountain bike standard and where designed to support up to 200 mm disks on a mountain bikes. Flat mount disk brakes are designed for road/gravel bikes, sit closer to the fork and chain stay and are more aero. Designed to for 140 and 160 mm disks.

If you have a mid cage derailleur it will work fine. You will have to adjust the B screw so the upper jockey wheel clears the 34 tooth sprocket. If you have a short cage use a Wolftooth Roadlink to gain the necessary clearance.

@flyingturtle4559

Chauncey__ It sounds like you may need to tighten your headset bolt (the bolt on the top of your front fork.) To diagnose if that is indeed the problem, put your bike on solid ground and grab your front brake so that your front wheel cannot roll, then with a firm grip on your handlebars try to push and pull your bike back and forth. If your headset bolt is loose you will feel the fork rocking back and forth in the head tube. To fix that you will need to fully loosen the pinch bolts of your stem that grips the top of your fork steerer tube then, with a 4mm hex wrench tighten the bolt at the top of your fork. Don't over tighten, just do small 1/4 turns then tighten the pinch bolts on your stem and repeat the rocking back and forth test.

It would be very difficult to get a straight cut on a steer tube without using a saw guide. The Park SG-8 saw guide is specifically for this purpose. This model is for cutting carbon steer tubes. The cost is $42.95. It may be easier to have a shop make the cut for you. If you do it yourself it would be best to use a blade made for cutting carbon fiber.

Hi John! You often talk about using cheap degreaser for cleaning bike parts (chain, cogs etc.). What exactly are you using for that? If you research different degreasers online you get overwhelmed with all the different options. Currently I use kerosene (or however this is correctly translated to English) but it's problematic to dispose the residue. I'd prefer something I can pour down the drain in the end. #askgcntech

I had this same issue when the left shifter suddenly stopped shifting the chain to the big ring. I tried all remedies, tweaking FD, WD40 in shifters etc etc.... Long and short, you both have faulty shifters and should be returned to Shimano or a Shimano wholesaler under warranty. The inner mechanical "paws"have failed so its either very stiff to shift or doesn't realign after you shift. I had a new pair of Ultegra R8000 sent to me within a week of the LBS sneding them back

Why can a bottom bracket on an extremely low mileage (1400 m ) carbon fibre cannondale super six evo creak under load, on a rear wheel off smart trainer (tacx neo ) but not make any sound at all, when riding it on the road no matter how hard I try ?

There is more frame flex with a static trainer vs out on the road where you let the bike move from side to side under acceleration. The Kinetic rock and roll addresses this situation and attempts simulate the real world.

I have a friend (ha ha) who routed his cable under the wrong side of the derailleur cable-clamp-screw (don't know the official name) on a 6800 Ultegra Shimano road derailleur. As a result, the angle of the cable between the end of the sheath and the clamp changed significantly as the derailleur moved between gear positions. So, the shifter moved the cable a preset, static amount, but the amount that the derailleur moved changed depending on the angle of the cable at the end. The result was that the derailleur could not be aligned for all the gears; it would skip at the low gears if the tall gears were aligned and vice versa. I think SRAM derailleurs have a system that prevents this mistake - at least, on the XX1 MTB derailleurs, there's a channel that makes it impossible to mis-route the cable - but the older Shimano 6800 does not. It should be obvious, but "my friend" somehow missed it. I just thought I'd mention this in case somebody else's "friend" made the same mistake and is trying to figure out why they can align some, but not all, the gears...
