A Toyota master diagnostic technician explains how the newest Toyota plugin hybrids work from the Prius prime to the RAV4 prime. Everything from their drivetrain, battery, charging and the heat pump HVAC system.
Welcome to a brand new series on my channel about Toyota plug in hybrids and specifically the Prime cars! We are in an age where electric cars or plug in cars are becoming the norm and in this series we'll take a look at Toyota's offering and their technology and design.
Of course we will be following my channel's theme of Simple but complicated to keep this easy to understand and follow.
In the first part of this series we will heavily focusing on the immigration from conventional Toyota hybrids to the Plug in hybrids. Some say that the original Prius PHV was the first plug in hybrid however I view it as an experimental car and the Prius Prime was the one that was truly the first full fledged plug in hybrid due it's better range and of course the cool name Prime!
Also in this video I'll respond to comments from my awesome viewers regarding the previous series I did on how conventional Toyota hybrids work. In that series I did not address or get into the planetary gear set so I am making it up in this one by going into how the planetary gear set works, with a focus on plug in hybrids but it also is similar to the regular hybrid Toyota.
If you are new the channel, Welcome first! Please find the series on how hybrids work as it will help you navigate this one easier Here:

These “Plug-In Hybrids” are the real future in my view. They will never run out of electric range and die on the side of the road, so they are the best of both worlds.

The prius prime advance has so many features than can rival a tesla. Wiper turn on when raining and the heavy the rain the faster it work. The high beam turns off automatically if a car can from the opposite direction. It can park by itself. The dynamic cruse control make driving easy by keeping the distance of the from car. It can be charged in two hours for 28 miles of ev range only. The price is way cheaper than the Tesla. Driving at 65mph the car can travel over 600 miles with a full tank. My only complaint is when is charging has to wait two minutes before the ac start and it work for 10 minutes only. I would like to know if somebody can hack the settings to adjust the ac timer longer than 10 minutes.

@@neliosamch3195 I want to make sure I understand what you're saying - so when the vehicle is plugged in to an electrical charger, the air conditioning cuts out for 2 minutes, cuts back on for 10 minutes, and then shuts back off until the vehicle is unplugged?
@neliosamch3195
@neliosamch3195 3 жыл бұрын
@@MarcillaSmith when you plug it in, you have to wait 2 minutes before you press the ac bottom then you have to press the ac bottom every 10 minutes to have ac while the battery is charging. You won't be able to have a 2 hour nap because it doesn't have camping mode at least you have the ice running. If the drive battery is full then you can have several hours of ac according to how cold you want to sleep. You can charge it and keep the battery full driving in charging mode then take the nap.

This kind of information is essential for all hybrid owners. Because when you understand ( at least the basics ) how it works, and probably even more important, why the designers made it that way, one can get the best out of the car. And, consequently, you will operate the car the way the designers meant it to be operated. Less wear and tear, more enjoyment, least possible operating costs and higher resale values. Besides, you, the owner, will be able to recognise possible problems sooner so you can tell the workshop what might be wrong. Thanks, CCN! Willem, Hekelingen, The Netherlands.

AMD, one dude in my FB group mod his Prius and double up number of battery packs. Not much details available other than he cut and weld the battery casing, use proper gauge wire, good connectors, etc (all parts salvage from original battery packs). So far he reported much longer range in EV, much better mpg. Pls comments in your next video.

HI AMD, the simple but complicated method is working. As for others, it’s the first time I’ve seen some detail in HOW the power sources interact on in the Hyb Syn Drive system. Nicely done. I also have a lot more respect for the engineers and the MAJOR complexity increase that went into the Prime series of vehicles. If they can design this, bZ4X should be a walk in the park, once they’ve got a reliable battery supply. Thanks again!

I do notice that the acceleration and power is much more in battery mode in my 2021 prime vs when the engine kicks in. There is a considerable power decrease while driving on engine mode. I love the all electric power on my Prime, great that they engineered to 84 mph of course I only take it up to around 70 mph cruising speed. I only wished the range is the same as the Rav4, more range would be great. I often wonder why the power decrease, I can only assume it's because there is more torque provided from the extra battery pack vs only relying on the engine to provide the electric to the MG2 motor.

Also with the prime in ev auto with ac off and in b mode which enhances the regen braking while driving in ev modes in town speeds and long braking i can drive almost 35 miles in ev only. Most times i am driving medium speeds i achive 70 mpg just doing hybrid only.

A couple topics that are popular in Rav4 Prime communities that would be cool to answer are: What happens differently in Charge Mode vs HV mode? I'm guessing it is diverting more power to MG1 to charge the battery, thus working harder, but there is frequent discussion of how much harder/less efficient it is to run in this mode. Also, do the rear motors of the Rav4 Prime regen? Is there a difference in regen in say one of the "S1-4 gears" vs just touching the brake pedal where the Charge needle is at the same "level"?

I have the new Venza with regenerative braking. I have been following these discussions. I think regenerative is the better choice. One video made the case for me. On a long distance trip, the battery will be empty soon, and you will carrying a lot of dead weight. The hybrid lithium batteries are much smaller and lighter. I get close to 45 mpg, no highway driving, with an endless supply of electricity. I have also been surprised with the sudden acceleration the hybrid provides. I thought I was buying a turtle.

CCN - Fact check: It's been more than a decade since straight hybrids have been limited to 28-MPH EV-Mode speeds. In particular, my 2015 Accord hybrid has entered EV mode at 75MPH. I'm pretty sure that's true of the 4th-generation Hybrid Synergy Drive (Toyota, post-2016), too. Of course, the range is extremely limited in that situation, since the limited amount of battery charge gets used up really fast.

@TheCarCareNut False. I own a regular 3rd gen prius and can get up to 45mph, and up to 1 mile with the stock battery before the engine has to start. So if I had a larger battery and am okay with a slow acceleration, or use the engine to get up to speed and then "coast" in EV it could absolutely keep 40-45mph in city and country roads all electric

They are just simple enough for a layman to understand, but complex enough for an enthusiast to learn. 2), I’ve read through all the comments here, and I cannot find anyone asking this question: Can the Prius Prime use the full power of MG1, MG2, and the engine in something like EV AUTO mode? From what I can find online the Prius Prime is governed at 101 MPH. Far above what anyone outside of a German autobahn would drive, but I was simply curious if it can output that much power. Thank you

Hi Keith. Thank you for your comment! So it’s not possible for dual motor drive to happen when the engine is running. Both MGs will drive only when the engine is off. When the engine is running it’s turning mg1 to generate and assisting mg2 to drive.

Hi AMD! My '03 V8 4runner's A/C pumps cold air but has been pretty noisy for quite a few years now. It's quiet when the A/C is off, so I'm assuming it's not the pulley bearing. Have you ever had to deal with this issue before? Keep up the great work!

Hi! It could be the compressor. First thing I would do is recharge the system. You’ll need a shop to do this to take out everything and recharge it to your correct amount. If not then I’d check the compressor

Thanks for the video. Got lots of info from them. Since you said we don't put the car in neutral for a long period of time, what about in the even of towing?

Hi! In towing you want the driving wheels off the ground in hybrids

Yes, the whole car needs to be on top of the tow truck with gear in Park and the Parking Brake on. It's not good to "drag" a hybrid with wheels on the ground.

There is also heretical mode. In heretical mode, mg1 drives the car and mg2 charges the battery.

Hi, can I clarify in the normal hybrid car, HEV, not the DM mode. When driving ev mode, you mentioned MG1 spinning opp direction of MG2. Question is, when MG1 spinning, is MG1 generating current?

Is the plug-in version of the Prius only available in the Prime version? And what about the 2023 Prius? I have read that Toyota has ceased production on the 2022 Prius.

I have one question: MG1 and MG2 in the prime have the same kw (power) as MG1 and MG2 in the non prime version ? Thanks a lot.

I think that if they would make MG2 just bigger it could also alone drive up to 130 km/h? With the engine stopped and MG1 spinning backwards to make sure the engine is still? The advantage of the clutch system is that you do not have to enlarge the MG2 by a lot and can use both engines driving the wheels. Or do I miss something?

AMD, did they install a transmission cooler as well to keep the MG Temps low enough to prolong the winding life?

Hi! No transmission cooler as it’s not needed because there’s no friction

1) Is it a good idea to buy a TOYOTA plug-in NOW or should we wait a little longer when the technology is more reliable and cost effective, my friend?
