Dale Copeland joins the podcast to discuss his latest book, “A World Safe for Commerce.” He explains his theory of dynamic realism before pivoting to U.S.-China relations and an impassioned and thoughtful hot-take on why those predicting a Chinese invasion of Taiwan don’t just misunderstand China - they are participating in the realization of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Interesting conversation as always Jacob. However it’s difficult to buy into the “dynamic realism” bit. How do you build trends - project the past into future? If not, how do you ascertain probabilities for possible outcomes? It sounded very academic when he spoke. Second, the heightened tensions are not merely due to Taiwan, it’s also because China has been involved in a serious of nefarious activities - be it Huawei case, not opening up markets as agreed (great China firewall included), fentanyl among many others. The Chinese have learnt the lessons from their 19th century humiliation well and are well intent on their revenge at the right time. So to say that their sole objective of BRI was economics is BS

Hey Jacob, Been following you since GPF. How 'bout them Hawks? Sorry. Just about as bad as my Lakers...except for the rings. Anyway, this is a great guy. It's so much hype about US/China byplay. What about the theft? That's an issue that I think might have some staying power.

i haven’t read the book but from what‘s said in the discussion, it seems Prof Copeland is of the view that the US had done something wrong by blockading oil to japan in 1939/40. well, what else could the US have done? It demanded Japan to withdraw from China but Japan refused.

Hopefully his voice is heard more. Nuclear confrontation is my biggest fear. I do think him mentioning the Xinjing cultural "genocide" is to make him seem a more hawkish on China than he really is otherwise he'll seem pro China.
