I saw Ink Sinker in Joanns & had to SNAG IT to test it out for y'all! Ink Sinker is an alcohol ink that claims to create "squiggly streams" for alcohol ink in resin! I've only gotten this effect to work in resin a few times but I don't really know what I did to achieve it. I had to find out if this was THE ANSWER TO ALL OF OUR PROBLEMS! Does Ink Sinker work?!

Not sure if this is a weird suggestion, but I'd like to see what it would look like if you premixed the colored ink with the white ink/ink sinker before dropping it into the resin. So then you already have your desired colors? Still might not do the lava lamp effect but the results could be really interesting. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Use pinata blanco blanco (white ink) put more colors and only like 5 drops of white, then colors again, then white again. Pinata white is the magic your looking for. Also, the tip that was floppy little nub, was a bubble that didnt pop. I love those molds too A thicker resin would also work better in a more shallow mold...thats it, the only tips i have for ya lol
@hayleymariemills
@hayleymariemills Жыл бұрын
I think the tip being squishy was also bc of the mold shape. With the bottom being a small tip, ALL of the ink she put in accumulated into that one small tip.

Oh yeah, maybe it doesn't PUSH the colors down, maybe it pulls them behind it, so the layer of ink on top follows the path of the white drip.
@lindacondray7918
@lindacondray7918 Жыл бұрын
Not so sure it was a bubble. If you watch the video, especially on the alcohol white, the white sinks immediately down to the tip. I suspect the resin needed to sit and thicken up just a bit.

Super interesting video, as always! :D Also, as someone who does a lot of alcohol ink sinking in resin, the best results I've had are with Piñata Blanco Blanco, but also and mostly adding some resin on top of the ink + sinker/white ink. But I've been wanting to experiment more with things, so I'm super glad you tackling this! I didn't know there were "ink sinker" that weren't labelled as white ink so it's super interesting :D
@Bexinmo
@Bexinmo Жыл бұрын
Viscosity is the issue. The resin is too thick for those colors to push through (Ranger is higher quality and probably more dense with pigment). The white ink has a higher density (white pigment is heavier, even in paint). Maybe try setting your bottles of resin in a hot water bath before pouring or sitting them in front of a heater or hair dryer. That should make them thinner. I'd also be super interested in what happens in you pour the resin and let it cure for a little before you do the inks. It would make it thicker, but you might get some thicker streams. I am just curious about the look, but might also slow things down enough that the alcohol ink doesn't make it to the tip and weaken it.
@crystalspangler-fm7rb
@crystalspangler-fm7rb Жыл бұрын
MY results wirh warming up TABLE TOP Resin, to make it thinner, basically ruins the project, because you run the risk of a flash cure, and once it’s warm, you won’t get “honest” effects you’d normally see without warming it. If you warm CASTING Resin, the thinner resins, which is what you should ONLY use for these types of projects, I PROMISE you, it won’t cure all the way! You could wait a MONTH! Just use CASTING resin, (look for that in the descriptions of the resins which usually indicate exactly that it’s a CASTING resin. I’d personally recommend the Lets Resin brand. They’re fairly priced, and I’ve never had any issues, with very few bubbles!! Table top Resin is what you’d use for coasters, bar tops, and things like cutting boards where you’re doing either abstract art, or BEACH ART!!

I have 2 giant bottles of C sinker white from Let's Resin, but I use that for the feathering effect, which has turned out so cool and I have to thank Daniel Cooper for doing the tutorials on that. It's one of the more popular pieces I make, though with so many done, I had to stop as I was running out of room to put the finished pieces. *laughs* So glad to see you back, unless you have been around and I have been too busy with life, work and getting ready for the holidays. Will say I am going back over some of your videos to get some inspirations for future things and I think I am going to see about tackling the liquid crystal round circles you did. Expensive piece to make, but I think it's going to be perfect as we live up here in Fargo, ND, and the weather changes are InSaNe! Thank you so much for showing this, because I do believe I would have run across this at some point this week and gotten it too. Going to wait for now though, money is super tight, but starting to get better. ❤❤❤

I think you'd get a better comparison by using molds with identical volume...and also using smaller molds. I think those are too deep. Also you can get better results letting the resin sit for a little bit before adding the inks.

Try using Piñata Blanco Blanco white ink and it will most likely give you a better effect.Also try waiting for the resin to thicken up a little before. adding the white ink/sinker. If the resin is too thin/runny it will allow the white ink to sink too quickly. All the best, Diane, UK xx

I wonder if it would pull more colors if maybe you do a few color drops & immediately add the white before you continue to do the other colors the same way? Would that make a difference by not letting the colors expand & bloom before you drop the white on them? (It showed a lot of green & since that was one of the last colors you dropped, it makes sense that it had less time to disperse & spread) Also if the resin was a little thicker, the inks would fall slower & not drop so fast to the bottom. It wouldn't be as soft if you were using a different shape mold where ALL of the white doesn't accumulate all together in a small tip.

I think perhaps different molds, and also letting the resin sit and thicken for a min that way the ink doesn't have such an easy time sinking all the way to the bottom. I’m so glad to see you doing resin again! I’ve enjoyed your other creative projects too but, a little like alcohol Hank.. I’m addicted to resin, tho not in an ingestible way😳😆 I’m curious how Lets Resins Sinker C white alcohol ink would work. It’s designed to not create blobs so, it might not pull the resin way down but, it may pull it down enough.. without dropping all the way to the bottom leaving the tip uncured like the Ranger did. I have the C Sinker but, I haven’t tried it with a deep mold yet. It is better than Piñata as far as blobs go in pendant molds; because it’s not as heavily pigmented. I love a good experiment! Thanks

Just a tip I learned from another resin artist when trying to unmold something. Take a pipette with alcohol and get that in-between the resin and mold. You don't need a lot, just a few drops and then squish the alcohol around and the cured resin pops out so easy! My husband was having to unmold some of my projects because I don't have the hand strength. With using alcohol I was able to do it myself. Soap works too but that made it a bit too slippery for me.

I agree with all the take away impressions u were left. 1 thing I have been shocked by soooo many times when I am “playing” is what an absolute game changer illuminating a piece can have. Especially since all the color sat at the bottom where u applied em, it will be the source & have strongest color FX for the light to work with. Plain white light will allow the colors to pop I would imagine… BUT ya know how RGB L.E.D. Lights can make things look like they’re moving when u strobe them!?!? It causes an amazing psychedelic looking effect! Just sayin! May turn out to be the magic sauce for these pieces!!!

Fantastic video from what I’ve seen on KZfaq your supposed to count the drops of alcohol ink with the sinker you match the number of drops and I’d drastically reduce the amount of drops you use overall I’d say imagine cutting the mold into 4 quarters and putting say 4drops of colour in each quarter and then adding drops of the sinker in the exact same place as you put the colour drops (colour first all 4 quarters then add the sinker)that in my opinion would reveal better results I love your channel and keep up the fantastic work!!!

Thank you so much for posting your experiments! I think that if you were to STIR the top of the mold about 25 minutes AFTER adding the sinker white, you might be able to drag the colors farther down into the mold?? And I think that the shape of this mold concentrates the white into the tip... I your mold was of a different shape, you might not get that soft tip.

I think the ink but also the shape of the mould might have had something to do with it too; testing it on simple round coasters might give different results because the ink would have a larger surface that doesn't end in one single point. If you want to play with more resin effects; as you know, every epoxy resin no mater the brand, goes through a cycle of temperature and thickness changes during curing. You can time and measure the temperatures your type of resin goes through, and add the colors at different times, temp and thickness and see what happens. I like to write down the resin brand, effect, and times/thickness, for future references too. Happy playing and thank you for sharing! 😃💖

I use alcohol not water to get mine out of the mold. The reason the alcohol ink one is more of a Smokey look is because it is smaller so it doesn’t need to fall as far. You should try this in a more shallow mold. You can also add colour then use the ink sinker then add more colour and more sinker as well. Also casting resin is much thinner so I am wondering if regular epoxy works better because it is thicker? Thanks for testing these.

I think you should use the box mold again for a fair comparison

I think it was just too big of an area for them to cover. What I would try would be to fill it halfway, use, alcohol, inks, fill it the rest of the way and use more inks then use the sinker and see what that does! I’m glad I held off on ordering this, because I’m not sure that I will now. Would love to see you do it how I suggested & see how turns out! Thanks for doing this video!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I don't know if someone mentioned this but I really think the problem is the shape of the mould! A pointed mould means there is only one direction for the ink to flow and spread. Next time try a cube shaped mould again?

I believe you need to add less white. Just one drop on each color. Then a layer of clear on top too give it extra weight on top of colors. . Then gently stir but not overlapping where you already stirred to mix and twirl the colors and it also pushes it down more. I have no idea though because I haven’t tried yet. If you surch for “the flower technique” you will see what I mean.

What if you used a mold that is wider, flatter surface? I'm wondering if the sharp point had something to do with it. It's like it had no place to work. I'm so glad you made this video, I was all set to buy some ink sinker! By all means....try a different brand.

Maybe you’re right! I think a different mold is next to be tested, thank you! ❤️

I've had great results with exactly what you do but "poke" it down with a resin tool after an hour. Super smokey effect! Kinda swirl it around. I've had lots of people buy those types from my shop.

try a drop of dish washing liquid soap in the water - makes it a lot easier to demould :) Great experiment. I too and struggling with getting colours to sink. I want to make big spheres :( Thanks for this video, interesting and useful watch. and you're awesome. I love how you present.

Hey…. If you put your colored alcohol ink into a pipette, then insert the pipette into the resin (that’s in your mold) and squeeze drops into the resin so they look to float, then put your white resin on the surface so it drops, it will bring your inks into that lava lamp look…. Try it out!! Love you and your videos, I got into resin way back after watching one of your videos… thank you!!

I really don’t know if it’d make a difference but maybe putting another layer of colored ink after the white/sinker might increase the color?

I'd also like to see it dropped in pre coloured resin... but also wonder if it was used in the sort of resing the 4d flower blooms work well in
