Bussin' With The Boys

Bussin' With The Boys

Recorded: March 21st, 2023
-----
Get on the bus with NFL players Will Compton & Taylor Lewan! The Boys are letting you in on their hilarious, high-energy (and often heartfelt) conversations. Topics range from exclusive stories to active player perspectives to out-of-left-field hot takes on things you and your friends only discuss behind closed doors. Sometimes they chat with a guest, sometimes it's just the two of them, but it's always a good time when you're Bussin' With The Boys.
And yes, this is the podcast where Mike Vrabel said he'd cut his piece off for a Super Bowl.

Except nobody will write with you if you tell them that they're going to get paid by the word. He's living in a fantasy. I know lots of Nashville song writers and have written with Craig Martin (rip) who helped write Tim McGraw's don't take the girl and my wife's mother laverna moore (rip) sang (and wrote) background on dozens of country hits in the 70's and 80's (still getting those checks) and if you sat down and wrote not one word that made it to the final cut there's no way to say if ideas you bounced around didn't contribute. That's why you rarely see a country hit that was written by just one writer. And being the #1 music listened to today it's hard to argue with the methods they use .

this guy is outlining exactly how you have a group break up and people stop working with you i guarantee he always maneuvers his way around with "well i did (x) which was more important so i get more money" assholes in music dont make it very far unless theyre chuck berry. the "write a word get a third" isnt really a meme, its a way to prevent arguments over money money arguments get in the way of the music, every artist knows this. i know the nickleback artists are really good (better than their reputation) but i probably wouldnt go out of my way to work with this guy if i set up shop in nashville

@@theclimbto1 No, he’s right. The writer on a song is additionally paid out for his lyrics. There’s no reason not to contribute the lyrics of a song to all band members and pick up the bag. Otherwise the money is just going back into an exploitive system.
@theclimbto1

@@jacetiller3156 I get Royalties. Depending on the system you are in, I'm in BMI, you're either on a 50/50 or a 100/100 Scale... yes, I know those are literally the same thing but that's how these systems show them. So you put your Writers on on side and they split that part. Those that didn't contribute to lyrics get put on the other side. Those that contribute to both, are on both sides. Since I write the songs and I bring in the people that perform, I take 100% of the Writing side. I give them 100% of the Performing side. There are no 'rules' to who gets how much, that's decided between the individuals participating... but once that's sent in, it is what it is.

The reason that ‘Write a word get a third’ exists is that it avoids the age old nastiness that follows financial disagreements should anyone not see eye to eye. Cut in everyone who’s in the room and you’ve got a group of people 10x more functional and productive than one that can’t progress with the project because they’re too busy nitpicking each other’s individual inputs.

@@jacetiller3156 He was discussing writing credits here. Radio plays only generate money for those that have their name on the songwriters list. That doesn’t really have anything to do with the label besides whatever cut of the royalties each writer has agreed to give to their label or publishing company. So while I understand the labels are exploitative (sometimes), that’s not really the issue I was addressing. My point was just that someone shouldn’t get paid for just being in the room
