The zone maps use the average minimum temperature from 1991-2020, not the coldest temperature during that time, so I think it’s reasonable to expect that we will continue to see temperatures colder than the zone would suggest, but less frequently. Personally I think that as the weather gets more extreme, the zone map concept might just not work as well as in the past.

I love the Laura & Aaron show and how you communicate as a couple. It's fun seeing a glimpse of behind the scenes of Garden Answer. Speaking of which, have you guys ever considered filming a day of Laura creating a video to show your audience how much work and time consuming the process is including editing? I've always wondered about the creativity that goes into creating GA videos because you do it so well.

Your idea of having a gate so the public can view your Christmas lights a couple nights is so generous. We had a neighborhood that did a similar thing. They did the Santa Claus, Hot Chocolate and even did a Toys For Tots donation. Not sure how the City Police figured in, but they had somebody directing traffic. They had foot traffic and vehicular traffic. I'm sure it would be a lot of work, but also a great gift to your community. Thank you for all of your inspiration.

Taking shoes off is essential for city living, considering people spitting on the sidewalk, dog doo, restaurant garbage etc. Also we in rainy & snowy areas, with mud seasons, it's messier to keep shoes on than leave them near the door. We also have lots of rabbits, deer & wildlife which posit their droppings just outside our door. In warm weather, I go barefoot as much as possible, rinsing before entry. For those with the above considerations, removing shoes is a no-brainer.
@happierinthesunshine8 ай бұрын
Agreed! I grew up in a rural area and no one took off their shoes unless they were really bad. But then I lived in a major city for 20 years. I got into the habit after visiting friends from countries where taking shoes off was done every time you came in the house. Once i started thinking about how gross the city was and how small my apartment it was (getting dirty much faster), I started incorporating it into my routine. Still not fussy about it, though. If someone comes into my home, I just let them do what feels natural to them.

Saving those things is part of the joy of crafting and saves time and headache of having to find or go buy the appropriate pc when you need it. I don't wear shoes in the house. A. Because I don't like wearing shoes period. B. Because they carry in bacteria and dirt. I quit when I had babies and they crawled around on the floor and then put fingers in their mouth. I think when they created the new zone map they didn’t take into account that a big chunk of the Rocky Mountain states and the west have had a serious drought for several years. I read somewhere that they were based on the last ten years weather. They raised the Salt Lake valley up to a zone 7 too. I would bet that if you plant zone 7 plants here 95% of them will freeze and die within the next 5 years. I shed my shoes at the door, not for sanitation reasons particularly but I'm just more comfortable bare footed. Indoor shoes and outdoor shoes would solve your situation but the habits you're comfortable with are hard to change. I believe the USDA zones are 10 year averages and although they have gotten more dialed in they can't predict everyone's micro-climate. You're the best judge of your garden and it can't hurt to push your boundaries experimentally.

Agree on the trash. We were in Japan a while and Tokyo with 19 million had no trash. I asked our guide who said, "And no public trash cans!!!" He went on that it had been a problem and citizens were told to "keep their trash until they got home". That's all it took. We stopped in NYC and you almost wept at the utter filth and garbage everywhere, We noticed, by the way, that much Japanese fast food was "handed" over and not wrapped in three layers of coating. Ugh! I wondered how long it would take before having sinks/water and toilets at some of the out buildings would be wanted. Of all the conveniences, these would certainly be on my list of things to have. Suggestion, there are really modern trailer style "outhouses" available these days. They are so nice and clean and not smelly, and a company comes to empty and clean them. Would be something to look into for sure. With some creativity, these could be built into the backside of any of your out building and fit in quite nicely. Reducing the traffic of everyone using your main house, especially once renovated. Just my unsolicited suggestion. Thanks for another awesome weekly recap!

love watching you and Arron interact with your children, reminds me of my dad and growing up in the 60's. We lived outside and only ever came in to eat and sleep. 🥰🥰🥰

I've spent this entire season silently envying your rainfall because you often say it POURED. I think I'm realizing that 'pouring' in the Midwest is a little different than the high desert :) At any rate, it's super dry and drought-ey here in South Dakota, and I would take that .2 inches if we could get it! Happy holiday season, you guys are a huge blessing to all gardeners, wherever we are.

I'm in SE South Dakota...my husband and I laughed when Aaron said they got a great rain...of.30"!!! A great rain for us would be an inch or more. We were extremely dry this summer.

I live in Arizona and can relate. I watch a lot of garden videos of allotments in the UK and it is forever raining there. They rarely have to water. Until last week we hadn't had any rain since March.

I love that you are not fussy about shoes in the house. We are the same way. My husband grew up on a farm and the only time shoes came off was if they were caked with mud. We are from the era where you wiped your shoes on the door mat. Good enough. 😊
@NursemomB8538 ай бұрын
I agree with you both about the shoes in the house. That makes me uncomfortable to ask others to do that. I’m not fussy either. Never even think about it. I don’t want to make others uncomfortable to come to mine. Things can always be cleaned.

I have a SUN JOE power washer and absolutely love it!! It’s electric with a really long cord and sprayer, the motor only runs when you compress the handle so no obnoxious, continuous noise like a gas-powered one, has two containers for soap, three sprayer heads and a foaming head, etc. Have used it HEAVILY for four years and not a blip! I clean the concrete and wood porches, vinyl fencing, garage door and siding, concrete and resin planters, even my truck, and it even reaches my 2nd story gutters when I stand on an 8 ft ladder. I think I paid about $120 on Amazon and it’s one of my favorite household tools!

@@wheaties1435 Yep, I bought the anti-freeze additive for winter storage, but never needed it since I keep it in the cellar instead of an outside shed. The instruction manual has instructions for draining and the anti-freeze for folks who need it.

Your response to that person talking about kids playing with sticks lmao. Love it. I was brought up in a bubble wrap family and boy i'd rather have had some bad things happen in my childhood than being not allowed to do most things because it was "dangerous" because the paper said that it happened one time
@edwardprettner82918 ай бұрын
The best way that I found to aerate the pond in winter is to take a regular fish tank air pump and add tubing to reach the bottom of the pond. Place a one way valve at the end to prevent water from getting into the tube and freezing and end it with a stone aerator. The bubbles keep a hole open in the ice even in frigid temperatures. I found the heaters couldn't deal with extremely cold freezes even with a high wattage unit.
